I've been running Win 7 RTM x64 for a few months now and hell yes, it's much MUCH better than the gutter tripe that is Vista. All my programs and a shitload of games run splendidly and I have yet to have any major issues with compatiblity (just a few minor problems that have been resolved). I like it, can't really complain much about the 64 bit system OTHER THAN the fact that you will have issues with Quicktime if you're running the 64 bit version. Fucking lazy bastards at quicktime refuse to author a proper 64 bit Quicktime version that supports VR Panorama and VR Object manipulation which pisses me off a bit as I tend to use those a lot for renderings I make.

Other than the lameness that is Quicktime (and i'm not attempting to blame M$ for it BTW) I say Windows 7 is the shit!

How did you get it pre-launch?
they are giving out downloads on the site. beta versions though.
The beta versions stopped being distributed ages ago. They then were releasing release candidates. Builds that were pretty much identical to the final product that were continually bug-fixed and re-released until Microsoft were happy with what they got and released the final as RTM or release to manufacturing version which is the same as the version that will be sold and packaged with pre-built PCs except for the part where it will start to shut your computer down every 2 hours from March 2010. Forcing you to pay for their product. The whole point of this release candidate exercise is to have thousands of effective testers to do their work for free.

OT: I myself LOVE Windows 7 which was my OS of choice for my new gaming rig. Its super fast, its super awesomely designed and i love the new task bar design. No compatibility issues apart from the issue where it wouldn't run the old copy of Myst that I own. Not its fault but mine as I failed to see the writing on the disk that says "For the Macintosh" *face palm* yes I used to have a Mac back in the 90's

I've been running windows 7 for about 10 months now (closed / open beta + release candidate), and I have to say I love it. Fast, stable, amazingly memory efficient, no crashes, no bottlenecks, all my hardware works with no fiddling, easy as networking, fast booting, really really really quick install.

I'm 2/3 convinced that microsoft had nothing to do with the programming of Win7 at all, instead outsourcing it to a company that actually knows how to use c. The 1st beta I got was more stable and reliable than windows xp or vista ever were.

For the first time since windows 3.11, I think I may buy a microsoft product.
Yes, because a company almost entirely dedicated to software doesn't the recources in-house to develop their flagship product.

Pull your head out.

Well to me its pretty much the same thing. Then again I've learned to use vista and 7 is just "let's fix some problems and re-release Vista." Whatever floats your boat but I don't see the amazing eye bleedingly good things that 7 apparently has (besides avoiding the vista pre-service pack 1 stigma).

Windows 7 = Windows Mac.

Seriously, everything I've seen of the system just screams, "We ripped this off of Mac OSX!" But then, what else would I expect from Windows, which was created out of the same foul play in the first place...

I'll mess with it when I decide to buy myself a nice gaming desktop. From what I've seen it's nice, but I imagine that really only pertains to the 64 bit version with all the features unlocked.

But yea not really a windows guy, waiting on Ubuntu 9.10 :D

So, Vista SP3 then.

Really, as you look at it in more detail, you'll see more and more places where Windows 7 is just Vista with knobs on (and an ersatz Dock at the bottom). The only real improvement is that some services are turned off by default and the flashy graphical effects are slightly less resource intensive.

I got confused whether this was a forum thread or a Microsoft ad. Anyway, I don't see why I would move from Vista to a different version of it which is less secure and has a more annoying task bar.

"More performance", oh please, if your computers can't run Windows, it's time for an upgrade.

Windows 7 is most likely the best OS I've ever used. Been using it for the last 7 months and I can't say anything but Microsoft you've done an amazing job. Keep it up!

Now, hurry up finishing the 128 bit version of Windows 8 you're already working on.

I would get it but I can't be bothered to buy it. I'm currently running with two Vistas on my hard drive (one is broken and won't go away)

Vista is more than good enough for me. I don't care enough to go to 7, and Vista kicks the shit out of XP, so I'm happy where I am.

Apple ripped off PARC.

I have a question for those of you who are running Win7 now. I haven't reformatted vista in a long time and it's getting choppy, do you think that if I upgrade from vista to Win7 it will fix those problems, or will I have to do a clean install?

To quote Steve Jobs
Good artists copy, great artist steal[/quite]
They stole their gui from zerox.

I don't care if it a copy, because when the copy is better then the original thats fine by me.

You mean the company that developed the GUI system? I'm not sure that really counts as ripping off, considering GUI is an interface, not an OS: merely a cog in the machine. It was a concept used in Mac, a concept that I don't think anyone actually credits Mac for the development.

What PARC did with their first computer with a GUI was way beyond anything in their time, Xerox just didn't want to fund their project. The entire concept behind the original Macintosh was completely based on what they did in PARC, because PARC showed it to Job's entire team.
