The fact is that graphic imagery shouldn't be seen on the cover i.e. can be seen by everyone, and should be hidden as much as possible. Sure, the V sign would be an okay logo to have in-game, but seeing it in-game requires you to be actually playing it, which young kids shouldn't be.

Alright, can we just calm the fuck down about this? all Valve have to do is get the original L4D logo and get rid of 2 other fingers instead, that's it over and done with. Can people stop making such a hissy-fit about this meaningless crap?
First of all, I'll get right off and say I couldn't give less of a shit about "graphic imagery" on covers. People need to grow up quite a lot. "ZOMFG MY CHILD MIGHT WALK IN FRONT OF THE BOX AND SEE A HAND WITH MISSING FIGNERS AND I MIGHT HAVE TO SPEND A MINUTE TALKING TO HIM/HER! THE HORROR!". That said, even if you do, L4D was marketed with the exact same cover, but with more fingers... OH SHIT! THIS ONE HAS 2 EXTRA FINGERS BITTEN OFF! IT IS SO MUCH MOAR GRAPHICAL AND HORRIBLE! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!! THE CHILDREN!!!

Really... And don't give me the "IZ A BAD SIGN!" bullshit. It's a mildly-bad sign in England, and only so due to general ignorance. It's the number 2, and the peace sign... Yet some dumbfucks used it as an insult half a million years ago (yes, hyperbole), so now it's an insult forever! Ignorance is not ok, and should not be allowed to live on.

While I agree with your views on the ESRB, you have to remember it's not laws. The law doesn't prevent the selling of anything to anybody as far as videogames go, The ESRB just provides a list of the content in the game and "recommended" age. If a store won't sell a 16 year old halo or any other M rated game, it's because the store itself has a very specific policy to prevent the soccer mom demographic from coming down on them.
I meant why do the costumer's and/or retailers give a toss. And it shouldn't provide a "recommended" age at all, just a description of the content. Any age "recommended" will always be arbitrary.

Good example of it: Difference between "mature" and "adults only". What's the difference? Isn't maturity what separates adults from children?

ESRB, Those people need a real job. Shoveling manure would be right up their alley. Who the bloody hell cares if one finger or 3 are gnawed off? Christians? HA! People with so called values are just as twisted as the rest of us. Anyone saying otherwise is lying to themselves. Or emotionally dead... or trying to sell something.

You're not English.
See I thought the two fingers up was deliberate, like a great fuck off to the undead hordes, but given Valves American it could just be a coincidence.
wouldn't it just be a sign of peace?

Anyway.... Jesus-Facepalm

Not even Jesus understands the stupidity in this action
In England giving someone two fingers up is not considered a sign of peace, quite the opposite in fact, it carries the same meaning as the middle finger does in America.

Dude...calm down...and it's more than mildly offensive. It's not the peace sign, the peace sign is showing the palm to the person with those two fingers showing up.

Again, as I said before, it's nothing much to get worked up about. People seem to fly into a mad rage at the slightest thing. Valve easily has the ability to just change one of the fingers, they shouldn't be that bothered about it.

I thought that they would be more worried about Dead Space's cover, what with the dismembered arm floating around with globules of blood in space.
Seriously...
But 2 fingers that look like they've been chewed off? Bannitbannitbannitbannitbannit etc.

You're right, it's not mildly offensive. It's not even mildly offensive. It's a number 2... Dear god, the horror! You know how it was first used as an insult? By British archers against the french, showing them they still had their "bow fingers" intact. I'm sure the story has been posted several times so if you're interested search.

Also, has stated several times throughout this thread, it wasn't over a mildly-offensive-to-ignorant-people-only-from-the-UK sign, but apparently due to the "percentage" of hand destroyed, which is just as ridiculous. It is something to get worked up about, it's a private organization overstepping it's boundaries.

Question, how does the ESRB decide what is okay? Is it like a triumvirate of the most ethical people in the land, or like do they get proper gentlemen and show them things, and rate it depending on the amount of tea spilled? I'm confused, did we vote them in?

No, not trolling, I'm trying to get everyone to calm the fuck down over something that's not that big a deal.

Why is it okay that the thumb, quite possibly the most useful thing next to the wheel, is chewed off but the pinky and ring finger must be protected from the gnashing teeth of ravening zombie hordes?
The original looks like whoever bit off the thumb got hungry and came back for seconds... And thirds.
Even if the fingers bent poster looks better (and I'm definitely not saying it does) at this point it's more a matter of the ESRB being stupid than it is about which is a better marketing tool. The game is marketed to older teens and adults, not 5-year-olds. I think the advertising should reflect that.

two-finger gesture is, as far as I know, uniquely English.
There is a story behind that, not sure if its true.
I think it was during the many times the English fought the French not sure which side it was but if they caught an archer they would cut those two fingers off(the two you would use to draw the bowstring)and than they would taunt them by holding up their two fingers as in "Nah nah, looky what I got".

Possibly untrue,but quite interesting.

They're not chewed off, the "zombies" in L4D are actually just regular people with an extremely potent strain of rabies and they rarely, if ever, bite, let alone eat human flesh.

I automatically assumed the thumb had been torn off by hand.
