We have been shown time and time again that politics and professional competition do not mix. I think the guild involved in the assassination should be banned as a whole to set an example. (Mind you I do not play the game myself. I find it too tedious. That and no pet class. :p) If an example is not made soon then soon no one will want to play in the tournaments as no one likes a "Beserker Pawn".
Its EVE. Spying, Berserker, Scams, Thieves, Politics, Insults and almost everything else that is a banable offence in most MMO's is perfectly legit. They will not ban Honda Accord. Ignoring the fact they would be banning hundreds of players, they would also be going against everything EVE is supposed to be. The whiplash would be huge.

That guy is a true ninja. He infiltrated his target's organization, got close to him, and then when he least expected it, turned around and assassinated him. It's beautiful, really.

That's nothing in comparison to some of the other things that happen in that game. Go back up to the OP and click on the link in one the last paragraphs, the one titled "devastating infiltration". The scenario described in that article makes this assassination attempt look like child's play.

Wow, that's actually cool. No they shouldn't be banned...

Bringing spies, politics and such in a MMO is awesome.
This. EVE has given unprecedented freedom to the players to build their own world; since this is the first occurrence, you can bet that there will be much tighter security at the next tournament. There are already massive fleets with capital ships, Titans, cruisers, dreadnoughts, etc; throwing in some security wouldn't be hard for these highly organized groups.

In fact, someone should start a security corporation for these events, start out small, and grow in size enough to attract some big contracts, get the proper gear to enforce the security, and show up for these events. If you did it right, you wouldn't even need enemies (at least, on the surface) because you would be everyone's client, and everyone would have a stake in your well-being...unless you're trying to pull off an assassination attempt.

Physical security in the tournaments is as absolute as it can be: The developers are the ones organizing the tournament. But the player corporations are responsible for their own team. They pick the participants. If you want to keep assassins out, make sure that your background checks are up to par. That said, the more professinal infiltrators in EvE are incredibly patient, willing to spend months building up a new character from ground up to make it seem like a perfect recruit for the target corporation. You might have been flying with the traitor for months without any incidents before his guns turn on you.

I somehow think I'm the only one old enough to remember the successful assassination of Lord British in Ultima Online.

Hearing the stories like these about EVE is the only thing thats tempting me to play.
If they ban stuff like this it will go back to being plain old boring MMO, so I say keep it in, because it's epic.

Drone Boats.

I watched the match and was though it was just a mix up until I got the news. Epic Win. It's things like these that make EVE the truly unique game it is and why many of us love it so.

This game just went up a notch in my books (Notch 1 now), but the ability of actually sneaking, spying and assassinating in total freedom is awesome. They shouldn't be banned, as the teams should be vigilent of who they allow on thier teams. Kudos to the assassin, all is fair in love and war!

I don't see much controversy here, I mean assassination attempts are a part of business in a game where dying means nothing or very little, it should of been recorded on fraps though, would of looked coolies.

The only thing that would have made it more awesome is having Stuart Hall ("It's a Knockout") commentating.

He who lives by the ISK, dies by the ISK.

Well dying in EvE can mean quite a lot. You lose stuff when you die.
