X[sup]3[/sup]: Reunion. Most confusing game ever. There's about 20,000 items on the screen at once*, and the controls are seriously fucked up, and the menu system is incredibly annoying. I got through the first Jump Gate, and then went "Fuck this!" and uninstalled and disposed of the damn thing.

The first level of Splinter Cell also had me stumped for a while (took me almost a year to beat that one, thankfully the others went much more smoothly)

Yeah, to this day I'm confused by the fact that the first level's design was by far the most confusing (except for the Oil Rig, possibly). You'd think they'd want to ease you into the game.

There's lots of 8 and 16-bit games that are exceedingly short, and -- to nonetheless ensure a lasting challenge -- difficult even in their earliest stages. Ghosts 'N Goblins and Ghouls 'N Ghosts come to mind almost immediately; even the first levels of these can be a tad trying.

Ghosts and Goblins. We actually purchased this monstrosity of a title. Never got past the second level. Who play tested that thing?!

Dude, I failed the demo for FEAR 2. o_o I think I win.

I can top that. I can't, despite many attempts, even up till this day, beat the tutorial level on BOTH Patapon and Patapon 2. To make matters worse, I got my sister (whose NEVER plays games) to beat the tutorial for me. I quit after trying to beat the first level for half an hour. I just got absolutely no sense of rhythm.

It did for me as well, but replace for a bit with never pasted it because after 2 days of trying I didn't care anymore

Jesus Christ, that game was just way too fucking difficult. Even with a walkthrough, it took me a week. Then the 2nd level was even worse, so I just gave up.

At least you're playing a man's game. I must have got 40 or more hours just out of playing the first Commandos game, just through it's sheer difficulty. They get progressively harder as well.

I was with a guy the other week who didn't even get that far. His path finding was so bad in that game, he might as well have been blind - he was literally going into a room and then walking straight out the same door he came in. Must of took him half an hour to meet the first enemy.
