READ AT LEAST THIS PARAGRAPH! And I stress that I don't mean watching hilariously awful movies where you can laugh at them. I mean watching truly bad movies which have absolutely no redeeming qualities, make you lose the will to live and fall into the deepest pits of despair. I call this movie masochism.

I found this strangely effective way of watching movies after finally giving in to curiosity and watching Sex and the City 2, courtesy of this review [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHeQeHstrsc] for sparking my interest. It was one of the most appalling film watching experiences of my life. I actually felt physical pain watching it, because it spewed repulsiveness from its every black orifice at 500 gallons per second in every way you can imagine, and some ways you can't. Yet at the same time there was something strangely purifying and transcendent about it. After finishing it I immediately popped in Spirited Away, and I truly learned to appreciate the value of good films. The feeling of relief over the fact that there are far more better films than SATC2 was so overwhelming I started to tear up.

Have any of you done this? Or is this another one of those ultra-bizarre niche activities? I would actually recommend watching at least one infamously bad film like SATC2, because it truly gives you a whole lot more perspective into how valuable good films actually are.

Thoughts? Which movies fit this category?

Well, after watching Linkara's review of Southland Tales [http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/linkara/at4w/35427-at4w-southland-tales], a friend and I decided to watch it. The movie is an odd one. At first, you think it has a point, and it's building to something. At first, you think it's a decent movie and can't see why they even did a thing making fun of it.

Then, ever so slowly, you begin to realize, that it doesn't have a point. That it makes no sense. That you literally don't know who is good, bad, who the antagonist is, or what is even going on. Slowly you start to realize that it's a terrible movie. You could watch just the last 30 minutes or so, and miss nothing. They literally bring a concept in that "ties it all together" in the last 30 minutes. It is a bad movie.

Yes, that is Justin Timberlake.
No, I don't know what this scene has to do with the rest of the movie

Also, I ended up calling the Rock "Squirrel Man" for half the movie.

I do this with anime. Like right now I'm watching Diabolik Lovers. Knowing it was based on an Otome game I knew it was going to be awful, but hot damn I never knew how bad. The show actually makes me a little sick watching it. The set up of the show is a girl's father sends her to live in a mansion but little does she know that five rejected Final Fantasy villains.. erm I mean vampire brothers live there.

The brother all take turns abusing the girl in horrible ways with blood drinking basically being a stand in for sex and since they always force themselves on her, she's raped every episode. And it's not me reading too much into the show, the biting and blood drinking are heavily sexualized, but even if they weren't the brothers make sure to spout the worst kind of rape apologist bullshit before biting her. Telling her they can tell she's getting turned on, or that she's asking for or they can't help it because mommy was mean to them.

I might make jokes about it but the show isn't hilariously bad. It's offensive and disgusting. Even fans of reverse harem anime are turned off by it. I don't like reverse harem anime to begin with because the girl is usually a doormat getting pushed around by the guys, but this show takes it to a whole new level. It's extremely degrading toward the female lead and she can't do anything to defend herself. There's a new episode tomorrow...damn it.

Actually on another forum I visit there's a club dedicated to watching bad anime. Now, we do try and pick hilariously awful stuff, but occasionally we will end up watching something that's just plain, black pit of despair bad.

I once asked the lady who sold the movie tickets which one was the worst of Did you hear about the Morgans and The Descent: Part 2. I ended up seeing The Morgans, and I actually enjoyed it even though it was supposed to b the worst of the bunch.

I have done this. I do not know exactly what I was thinking or trying to do to myself, but I watched:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372873/?ref_=nv_sr_1

It was so bad that I can't even type its name.

All the warning signs were there. A Korean story and all the main characters are Caucasian. The advertisements for the movie disappeared the day after it opened in theaters. And, most damning of all, it appeared on cable TV less than 4 months later . . . . on the SciFi channel . . . . in the Sunday evening slot opposite the Simpsons.

The horror! The horror!

But I watched it. I persevered through it to see just how bad it was. Why? Why did I do this to myself?

Sure. Particularly when I've seen a bunch of good movies in a row and need to make sure I haven't gone "soft." I just watched Movie 43, for example (although I actually didn't hate it, reminding me I have no taste when it comes to comedies).

I watch bad movies at least once a week. For example I've seen all three Bloodrayne movies. SyFy originals are also heavily involved in this weekly ritual and by ritual I mean drinking.

My God... that sounds revolting. Like all the worst aspects of twilight and reverse harem rape hentai fused to create an abomination to end all abominations. Fuckin' Japan, man...

As an additional note, I once watched New Year's Eve, trying to achieve the same effect. To my disappointment, it was merely bad, not the kind of über-schmaltzy, seppuku-inducing pukefest all the reviews had been hyping (though it was still very schmaltzy and sentimental). I'll even admit that Zac Efron was alright in it and it even made me chuckle a couple of times. I was rather let down by it.

Maybe I'll give Eat, Pray, Love a shot next.

Anything by Friedberg and Seltzer is beyond terrible.
You think Sex and the City is bad? Try watching Meet the Spartans. I guarantee that it's worse than anything else mentioned in this thread.

Here's the type of "humor" that makes up the majority of their movies:

I watched Bio-Dome once, I can't remember why, the movie was so bad it went past the make fun of it point and kept on going, I tried to get a friend to watch it once and she couldn't get past the first scene. Truly awful.

Tell me about it. I sat through "not another date movie" or whatever its called. Possibly the stupidest moment of my life. You know that feeling you get after you watch one of these dreadful movies and you think "ive genuinely wasted an hour and a half of my life" i dont really agree with the phrase "wasting time" i procrastinate a lot, im a bright guy and if i didnt procrastinate id probably be as built as arnie and some sort of physics professor but id rather procrastinate because its fun so ive ended up as a rather average guy with a rather average job

However watching movies like this is beyond procrastination, i watch one of these and i then see myself in third person sat alone surround by empty cans of lager, unwashed dishes with remnants of my previous weeks chinese takeaways and cigarette butts. I see what i have become, i see the downward spiral my life has taken and watching these movies is at the bottom of this spiral. Once you have reached this level its almost impossible to climb out of the pit of dispair yet you can take solice from the fact you can fall no further.

But somehow this mirror into your soul is redeeming. I probably consider myself an emotional masochist. I feel a strange sort of pleasure from this feeling

Well I did watch this movie on Netflix call Freaky Faron. It's about this teenage girl whose apparently supposed to be a one girl Men in Black in that she polices aliens on Earth or something. She starts the movie getting out of a phyciatric hospital 'cause apparently she killed a guy "in the line of duty" but of course no one will accept anything about aliens so they locked her up. So anyway no sooner is she out she's approached by this other girl who tells her about this guy who's an alien who's after some Mcguffin and that they need to stop. So the rest of the movie is these to girls trying to keep this mcguffin, which is only ever referred to as "The Thing," out of the hands of Mr. Alien Bad Guy who wants the The Thing so he can escape Earth. We never do find out what The Thing is or what is does or how it's supposed to help Mr. Alien Bad Guy escape Earth. It reminded me of this other movie, the title of which I can't remember, where the characters spend the entire movie chasing down this silver metal case, but we never find out what's in the case or why everyone wants it so bad. The only difference is that that movie was marginally better.

Have I watched a bad movie on purpose?! HAVE I WATCHED A BAD MOVIE ON PURPOSE?! I fucking REVIEWED a bad movie which I watched multiple times on purpose and indeed plan on watching AGAIN!!

Other than The Room though, I watched REPO: The Genetic Opera more than once in a vein attempt to convince myself it wasn't terrible. I'm sorry Jim I just didn't like this movie (Sarah Brightman couldn't save it for me). Other bad movies I've watched on purpose...aren't really coming to mind...I just watched Halloween Town which was a mess of plot convenience and shit.

I've watched The Room, Birdemic and The Last Airbender, though I had my brother and/or Riff Tracks during these for more comedic value as I've not watched any of them on the big screen.

Yes. My friend and I were planning to make a review show, and we went through a good couple dozen coming up with material. Unfortunately the review style was to involve me animating the scenes of us and doing voice acting, but sadly I could not find someone to teach me how to use flash well enough. I hate that piece o' sh*t.

I watched Son of the Mask to have a baseline to measure bad films by.
I want to see Freddy Got Fingered, but I can't get my friends to sit down for it.

Hard to say with real conviction, since my sense of humor can usually find something to dredge out of really bad movies. I have on occasion not stopped or departed movies I knew were almost certainly going to be bad. I sat through Wild Wild West twice because friends wanted to see it. I sat though Movie 43 because my wife picked it up in ignorance on the strength of its cast.

But life has grown a bit too short to sit through truly awful movies if all I'm going to get out of them is self-flagellation and maybe a bit more appreciation out of the non-awful ones. I'm not so jaded that I feel I can't appreciate really good movies on their own terms.

Brace yourself, for what I'm about to tell you might cause you a heart attack...

...but I've actually seen Meet the Spartans twice, once in theaters, once on DVD (I assure you, I didn't support it monetarily on either occasion), and neither time did I want to kill myself. I actually like it more than 300 (which is still the worst movie I've ever seen). Yes, MTS is absolutely terrible, but a nihilistic kind of terrible. Sex and the City seemed to actually believe in its characters and philosophy. It thought it was genuinely making some sort of statement. Whereas Meet the Spartans didn't believe in anything. It knew everything about it was crap, had a sort of "Whatever the fuck, doesn't matter" attitude and wasn't trying to say anything which in the end was rather empty and numbing instead of actively aggravating like SATC's consumerist pornography or 300's quasi-fascist, militaristic macho "PHWOOOAARRR" masturbation.
