I believe people buying these games in the first place is a more pressing issue than EA having a monopoly

Meh, sports games are not usually fun (to me) anyway. I think its just another set of lawyers trying to get lawsuits out of the gaming world

If you don't like it, then DON'T FUCKING BUY IT.

I mean, my god people, is this so hard to grasp? They'll sue somebody for anything now.

It's a fucking EA Madden game, if you're buying it then you should know what to expect by now.

I'm sorry, but this is one of the stupidest bits of gaming news I have heard in a long time, since the "pre-owned is destroying the market" bullshit.

Forget the lawsuit: what the hell is this nonsense that you're automatically a part of the group until you stand up and say "I do not wish to be a part of this group, please exclude me."?

Well I'll tell you what I think it is: crap. If people want to join, let them sign up. Don't make people sign up to not take part and just bring everyone who didn't know they had to sign up to not be a part of this along for the ride whether they know they're going or not.

Thankfully I never buy any sports games, so I'm already excluded because of that. But I shouldn't have to sign up to be left out if I had bought one.

The real question is...

..when do we get to collectively sue EA for deliberately ruining Command & Conquer?
I dunno, but that one I want to be a part of. Got C&C4 for $5 during a Steam sale and I still feel like I spent too much money on that [insert all kinds of colorful synonyms for shit here].

(Too bad we can't actually sue them for that though)

Can we get a class action lawsuit against Activision for the CoD franchise? I want my money back for the Modern Warfare 2 bollocks.

While I'm against 'here's some new players models, boot skins and names, that'll be another $60 this year please, and btw, it's August 2007, so we're calling it MAdden 2008.', I'm even more against the utter waste of time so many legal cases are.

They got away with it, because a vast number of people would rather buy a Harry Potter game, than, for example, Okami, because they recognise the brand, I battled this all the time when I was working in a game store, people would come in, ask my opinion on a suitable game, then ignore every suggestion I gave them, and buy 'generic licensed game 2010' instead, anyway.

Seriously tho, I wish there was some way to stop frivolous lawsuits, and I think I have cracked it.

Simple, no more monetary payouts except under genuine circumstances where a payout would be required under say, the need for constant healthcare because your product crippled people.

Instead, if you are responsible for fucking up, jail time. Maybe only a week or two, but don't worry, 99% of cases won't even happen any more, because people don't care if you were wrong, they care that you have cash they can sue for.

This is why bums don't get sued for getting drunk in the park. Taking them to court for 7 cents and some pants fluff doesn't really work.

EDIT: Yes, I know it's a simplistic solution and wouldn't work, I'm just sick of the legal system being used just to sue people for an easy payout, instead of being about, you know, crime and justice and all that stuff that comes under 'legal'.

Yes, they are releasing a tweaked game every year, but not for a higher price than FIFA, which they don't have a monopoly on. There should be a minister of common sense to overturn ridiculous lawsuits like this.
minister of common sense. best idea ever, and a job that i couldn't be less qualified for

You are not considered a part of the class if you bought your EA football game on a mobile device, directly from EA, purchased your games used, or are an EA employee. Otherwise, you will only be excluded if you take the steps listed at the plaintiff's site [http://www.easportslitigation.com/exclude.html].
If this only applies within the US, could you update the news article to say? Its annoying that this would be reported without it being said one way or another; we are not mind-readers and not everyone on this site lives in the USA.

Decisions on censorship in the US are enough to affect worldwide game sales, and I'd like to know if this has a similar scale of effect. I expected this to be much clearer.

Funny you mention that... I remember seeing it for $5 on Steam and thought to myself "Nope, I still can't do it. I know it's not worth it. I won't give them my money for this"... I know for a fact I will hate C&C4, so I can't bring myself to buy it. The series is ruined for me. :(

Yes, its about time. Its not about overcharging for the game. Yes 60$ is the same every other major game runs for.. Its the fact that by having the monopoly they have been selling the exact same game for the last 5+ years with little or no actual development and barely anything related to esthetic changes for 60$. Yes, EA needs to get called on their shenanigans with this.

So, by your logic, if there was only ONE game franchise for any gaming genre (FPS, RPG, RTS, etc.) which also happened to suck, fans of said genre of gaming would, if they didn't like the franchise, be forced to simply not play their favorite genre?

THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! YOU SHOULD BE MINISTER OF EEEEEEAAAAAARTTHHH, MAN!
I'm just saying that if you're going to keep buying the games and then sue them for those games, it seems a bit silly, no?

Fair enough about the Football game monopoly, there should be other ones on the market. But as I said, I just found this kind of silly.

... What?

This is the second example of this seemingly nonsensical shit - the other being MS's complaint about Google "unfairly" dominating the market.

If people buy the bloody things then that's up to them, and they cost the same as other games anyway.
The lawsuit has a point. EA purchasing the rights to the NFL and players label ruined the market for everyone else, such as 2K.

Why would you defend EA?

Not everyone buys Madden cause they want to, it's the only damned NFL licensed game so we don't have much of a choice. EA has no competition and it shows in the games. Compare this to the NBA, where NBA2k11 was so much better than the piece buggy shit EA was GOING TO RELEASE until they were shamed by the masses.
