There are pleanty of fantastic free online games by the way. They just don't waste thier money advertising much.

The best free game (maybe even best period) I've ever played was www.materiamagica.com. Text MUD at it's absolute finest. You can donate to recieve ingame items but nothing is mandatory to be competetive and someone with $5000 to blow wont have a huge advancement. Atleast this was true while I still played a few years back.

So far as Evony being sketchy? Not surprised the slightest.

Alright who actually clicked on one of those ads to play this game? Don't be ashamed, your punishment is well deserved.

The game is frankly punishment enough & tits have -NOTHING- to do with the game.

You basically get a grid of land and you have to build stuff on it and make people live there.
I didn't get past building a house (Because the UI is complete garbage) before I'd logged off for good.

That's about as far as I got before I stoped caring and went to do something fun.
Curiosity got me that time, but never again.

I mean, being serious gamers who take games as "srs business", why would you even go near one of these shady, free games? I'm sure we all have large enough libraries that there's some great gaming moment to relive.

I actually clicked it waaaayyy back before they were so suggestive and stupid. I saw it, thought "hmm, looks like Travian. I did enjoy that, and I could join a server before people have been playing for months." I stopped playing on principle when the ads got that bad. Although, I still think it's hilarious that these pics were all sent in by women who wanted to be 'queen'. There was some vote thing. Is anyone surprised that it's looking like Evony is a bad bad money sucking spyware machine thing?

I really find it disturbing that the company has managed to get away with these advertisements for so long...
Yes.. they also banned the use of the word "Civony" in game... what they used to be called before Sid Meir sued their arses off :p not to mention they got sued by Age of Empires for using their sprites, numerous model agencies AND custome shops for using their models images without permission... I cant wait to see what successful lawsuit hits them next!

I registered some months ago, since I love browser based MMO/strategy games and have spent an insane amount of time with some of them (Ikariam, Tribal Wars and recently the Imperion beta). I logged in, realised there is a worldwide live chat in the game, with different channels and filters and everything, thought "Wow, that's pretty awesome", typed "Hello" in the chat, asked one or two questions, then I got a message saying that I have to buy coins if I want to chat more. COINS BUY YOU A SPECIFIC NUMBER OF LINES OF CHAT TEXT IN AN MMO GAME. I logged off and never logged back in. :)

That link at the bottom was a good read, it's bit strange that they put so much effort into one scam.

If you fall for that, I think it should be considered charity that they remove all that data from you, as you clearly lack the common sense to understand it, and it probably makes your head hurt.

NEVER TRUST GAMES THAT ARE "FREE". NOONE IS THAT GENEROUS
That's not really the case. There are a number of micro-transaction based free-to-play MMO titles that are completely legitimate. It's a shame that there will always be second-rate scam titles like this to make the rest look bad.

So they collect personal infomation and then sell it on? Rather like a certain facebook developer.....
Shouldn't that be MOST Facebook developers? And Facebook itself for that matter?

all of them even battleon.com have hidden charges. like with the example battleon.com you have to pay to become a gardian. or club penguin you need expensive membership to buy stuff. moshi-monsters needs membership to go anywhere cool. and they are for little kids that have no money to start with. nothing comes with no hidden charges. nothing. not even ones that actually say free forever or no hidden charges. just dont do any. just spend your time on stuff like this. the escaper is free forever even though it dousnt say it.

From what I heard it's a browser based Civilizations clone
