Have you ever found yourself playing Need for Speed or Midnight Club and spending more time customizing your vehicle than actually racing it? I do, and it's not because the process is long and tedious. I simply have more fun customizing than actually entering a race.

It isn't like this in only racing games either. I can spend hours on end building a map in Forge on Halo 3 but I have yet to finish the campaign in the month I have had it, and I get bored/frustrated with multiplayer in less than an hour usually.

Is anybody else guilty of this? Other examples I could think of are reading codex/background information, watching cut-scenes over again, playing mini-games, doing random stuff in a sandbox game, grinding for the sake of grinding, listening to the music, etc.

And do you think developers are doing something wrong if this is the case in one of their games, or do you think this is just a result of a well rounded game appealing to a wider audience?

I don't know if demos count, but I found it more fun in Just Cause 2 to fly high into the air with a helicopter, jump out of it, and then try to chase after it than to do any of the other things the demo had to offer.

I spent more time in the Guilty Gear XX ACore+ Galleries looking at the special art than playing the game itself.
Its got some beautiful artwork.

Tales of symphonia 2:
Game utterly failed to it's parent, but I did indeed enjoy raising the strongest monsters.

Resident Evil 3. I spent a whole lot more time playing the Mercenaries extra game after I beat it then I ever did playing the actual game.

It was a lot of fun.

Mortal Kombat 3 on the Snes had an awesome secret Galaga-hardcore edition game built into it.

I spent a lot of time listening to the music of Eternal Sonata than I did actually trying to progress in the story.

In Sonic Adventure 2 I cared more about raising Chaos than I did beating records etc.

In FFX I remember times the only reason I turned it on was to play Blitzball.

Agree and Agree. The first ToS is my favorite game ever, and while I did enjoy the sequel, it just didn't do that much for me. That said, I freaking loved my Fenrir. Adorable little scamp. Not the best monster, but that things saved my life so many times over.

I do the same thing in Halo 3 with forge. Man I can get pretty addicting.

In Disgaea 2 (psp) I spent a lot more time unlocking all the bonus characters than completing the main story.

I spent so many hours building houses in the Sims games that I often forgot there was more to it.

Saints Row 2: throwing people into stuff. Usually waiting by the side of the road and throwing people into cars, but trains are fun too :D

Oh, you're a steamroller. Same with me. There's a strange satisfaction in watching your horde grow, then unleashing it upon your enemies all at once.
