I grew up around nasty chlorine swimming pools. I spose its something you get used to, as I do remember the lingering burning sensation after i'd get home from swimming lessons as a kid. Salt water pools are less abrasive (the sensation I liken it too). Ocean water though, for me, is much worse than either of the two.
I usually keep mine open but in some pool's the water has so much chlorine in I can't physically do it and I get the same pain as OP not to bad at first but then a hideous burning for the next hour or so.
I also don't both opening them if I swim in the sea. But I don't dive under as much in the sea as I always seem it drink a shit load of salt water.
I usually wear goggles, but if the water is unchlorinated, I can open my eyes. It's usually not a good idea with my contacts in though, because I usually don't bother taking them out when I go swimming, so I try to keep them closed if I don't have goggles.
I handle it fine until usually an hour after getting out of the pool when the chlorine really reacts in earnest.
Then...
the burning
oh god the burning burning ahhhhhhhhhhh
I panic, my mind feels like all the water is going to rush into the holes between my eyelids and eyes and asplode my head. It's a childhood fear that I haven't been able to get over.
I'm usually fine with it. I don't do it often, because then it just feels like I've worn contact lenses for several days. Saltwater is usually easier though.
