When people use Facebook to like/comment things, their friends see links to our site on the commenter's profile which gives us traffic and (many) new viewers. We try hard to keep it unobtrusive for people on the site though.
I mean, YAY MORE BUTTONS! And there's a comment on my comments!
The best part for those not actually using the Facebook comments is to watch for some jackass to say something embarrassing, and then see all their friends and family make fun of them publicly for it.
In regards to the quality of the comments, FB actually has quite a bit of built in filtering/etc that takes care of easy spam like first posting. Also, after the filtering, the comments are sorted by "relevance" rather then time - so comments that are by your friends or are more liked will float to the top. People can also mark things as spam/etc to get the auto-moderation to kick in.
