Facebook Comment integration with the website

Yeah.. the whole FB comments thing baffled me. Its like pandering to the fringe crowd who cares just enough to read a news article, but not enough to bother signing up.

Personally I just ignore anything written in FB comments on articles. If you cant bother to post properly in the thread, then I cant be bothered to read those comments.

My personal opinion is that Facebook is the bane of the internet. Any site that approaches its customers' privacy with such a blasé attitude should be avoided or provided the least amount of personal information possible. Thank whatever higher power you believe in that the Escapist hasn't gone the route of forcing you to use Facebook Connect to login. I saw this happen on another site a few years ago and immediately stopped frequenting that site because of it.

In fact, I think the use of real names (and occasionally faces) is probably preventing people from turning their constructive criticisms and arguments into "Fuck you. You're wrong," because the people commenting are less anonymous.

The FIRST comments I saw were this, basically. So I respectfully disagree.

I'm honestly having trouble finding an insult in a comment. The most negative comments I'm finding are negative reviews of articles, such as those on the The Witcher 2 review, which explain why they dislike the review. Still, nobody is simply saying "This guy is a dumbass," or "He's not a dumbass, YOU'RE a dumbass!" Again, I don't see anything worse than the normal Escapist comments anywhere. In which article(s) or comment(s) are you seeing this behavior?

Well, it's not outright flaming, but the most recent Facebook comments on the newest Moviebob video featured

-extremely stupid knee-jerk sentiments about gay-bashing (Bob may be a lot of things, but I don't think homophobic is one of them)
-Use of the word "******" (note to mods: I am using this word simply to point out its presence ON YOUR WEBSITE, so don't mod me please)
-posting in another language
-triple posting (same user as above)
-someone's intention to illegally download the movie rather than pay for it (and if the mods don't like adblock, you can imagine how they'd feel about out-and-out film piracy)

None of these things are particularly "bad" in my opinion, but they definitely are against The Escapist's rules. So... Not quite as bad as YouTube comments, but not great either.

Thanks man, I dislike this new feature. Why does every site have to be connected with facebook now? It's like fucking Borg... That's coming from somebody who uses Facebook daily as well and likes it.

When people use Facebook to like/comment things, their friends see links to our site on the commenter's profile which gives us traffic and (many) new viewers. We try hard to keep it unobtrusive for people on the site though.

I mean, YAY MORE BUTTONS! And there's a comment on my comments!

The best part for those not actually using the Facebook comments is to watch for some jackass to say something embarrassing, and then see all their friends and family make fun of them publicly for it.

In regards to the quality of the comments, FB actually has quite a bit of built in filtering/etc that takes care of easy spam like first posting. Also, after the filtering, the comments are sorted by "relevance" rather then time - so comments that are by your friends or are more liked will float to the top. People can also mark things as spam/etc to get the auto-moderation to kick in.

I did the easy thing and simply blocked any facebook script from running on my browser.
Doesn't stop me from seeing them, but at least the fucker can't track me across the internet anymore.
Even after I deleted my account.

I understand the reasoning behind these features 100%. It doesn't mean I don't find it a horrible mess of shit to look at though

I'm becoming seriously miffed at the way fb insists on following me around the internet like a needy significant other. If I had another semi-convenient way to keep up with old friends, family, etc i'd probably have gotten rid of fb by now.

Oh, and thanks to the OP for showing how to shut off the fb comments thing. rage level subsiding...
