Are they naughty? Are they kind? Are they mad or noble or both? Are they tiny with buglike wings, or tall with antlers? Do they live in a palace or under the hill or in another world or inside a mushroom? Do they kidnap babies or do they grant wishes? Are they monstrously ugly or enchantingly beutiful?

Maybe they are all of the above.

What are fairies, in your opinion?(Assuming they exist, of course. In most people opinions they are "Not")

They look nice, but when you look at them properly, they are evil and choke people with rose petals!

Guess where that's from.
Torchwood, of course :)

Yeah, I think of fairies differently depending on my mood. They range from the Discworld elves of Lords and Ladies to the sweet cute fairies of most Disney-style stories, for me...

They are members of Alqueda. They cause very small explosions at US bases and mosques.

"Explosion at mosque in central Afghanistan, one person receives minor bruising to left hand"

THAT was the work of fairies.

Annoying, sparkly, giggly things; like if little children could fly.

I've always thought of them as being totally amoral. I quite like the idea of them having glamours and being able to look like whatever they want.

They oppress the other races, such as hobbits, merfolf, and giants, with their annoying magic and ability to fly everywhere.

People had to explode a volcano on them to get them under control.

They're all those things, I think--at least, from the different stories and myths I've come across.

Though, I find the resident experts to be those from England.

Lords and Ladies said:
Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.

The thing about words is that meaning can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.

No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.
Damn good book, I think Pratchett's elves are far more interesting than Tolkien's.

To me, fairies are little annoying green lights that have wings and say 'Hey, listen!' every other minute.

They are invisible, have no physical presence, no magical presence, nor spiritual and live in the air for that is what they are... NOTHING.

Argh there are to many adaptations and varieties (I mean what the heck is a Sylph and how is it different in mythology). My guess would be that they are minature winged humans around 3 inches tall with wings each with individual personalities.

Fairies are are the new version of the myth, so whenever I see it spelled like that I think Tinkabell and:

this.

Now, Faeries, the original spelling of the word, make me think more to the traditional view of a wood sprite that can either be helpful to travellers or turn out to lure them deeper into the wood and get them lost for cruel fun.

I always consider fairies to be natural illusionists and shapeshifters, entirely amoral, cunning and devious, but relatively easily distracted by their whims which they try to indulge ASAP. These whims might include wanting to hear you scream in terror and seeing the colour of your insides (and sharing that colour with you, with sharp knives and pointy hooks).

Oh, and iron is to them what kryptonite is to superman.

Did anybody notice that despite the fact that Tinkerbell from the disney film is often used as some sort of "symbol" of the modern, sweet, children friendly sparkly fairy, she is actually fairly close, behaviour wise to the terrible traditional Fair Folk? I mean... She tried to murder Wendy. More then once. Because she thaught Wendy is stealing her... However she defines her realationship with the boy, I guess. Plus she is fairly mean(If not evil) and likes to play tricks on people.
This is not sweet at all.
