While it's not shocking to me that people do this, I myself have never encountered anyone who does.

I however do wear glasses (the real kind), as my sight is horrible. And I quite dislike wearing them to boot. I always manage to smudge them; even when I'm trying to clean them with the microfibre cloth and lens cleaner! I just find them a general inconvenience anyway.

Also, they make things I enjoy like skiing a lot more bothersome. I have to wear extra thick ski-goggles so that my glasses fit underneath. Now, that itself isn't too bad, but they always fog up... Not the goggles themselves though, but the darn glasses!

/end slightly off-topic rant about *real* glasses >_>
Your rant is actually why I thought he was joking about it. To keep up the charade of wearing real glasses when you don't have to, seems like a lot. Really, I also think they are a pain in the ass. But the fact that I can actually see things, and everything isn't just a smudgy blur is the reason I keep putting up with them. Also I like not hearing, "Why are you looking at me like that? You are looking at me like I've done something suspicious!" Me: I'm just trying to make out your facial features!" lol

I haven't personally known anyone who does this, but I am sure people do and I have seen the "attitude glasses" in shops before, and laughed. My mom is a person who MUST wear glasses, so I know the pain through her.

I do occassionally wear fake ones, but not to make myself look smart. It's usually because I'm going to a con as someone who wears glasses. Otherwise, I don't either. And this is the only time I see people wearing fake glasses.

I was at a get-together last week and I met my friends new boyfriend. He asked if he could see my glasses. I usually don't like people touching my glasses but I was already a bit tipsy and in a pretty good mood, so I agreed. He put them on and said, "Oh, they're real!...And your eyes are really bad." I say, "Of course. Why wouldn't they be real?" He tells me that he knows someone who wears fake glasses to look intelligent. At first I thought it was a joke and I laughed a bit, but he told me he was serious. That some people actually do that.

My question to you is :

Have you ever encountered anyone who has actually done that? If so, what did you think?
oh yes, it's part of a growing "hipster"/ pseudo-intellectual sheik and it's UTTERLY FUCKING RETARDED AND AN INSULT TO THE ENTIRE FASHION WORLD*

*I get to say this, I have a fashion degree, work as a tailor and designer, and have even taught classes on aesthetics and textiles.

I had a friend who used glasses just because they looked cool.
It was annoying. "Dude, you don't need them, your eyes are fine, take them off. On the other hand, I can't do anything without them."

Then someone punched him in the face and broke his glasses. It was unrelated.

Oh, and they were blue tinted glasses. Not even good as sunglasses.

I've never met anyone who has. But if they want to, who's to say they shouldn't? Some people do look better in glasses. And do sunglasses count? Because if they do, then a lot of people wear them just to look cool. Yes, some wear them due to places actually being sunny, but quite a few more just do it to look cool as well. This does remind me that my vision is going and I will need glasses before too long though, so thanks for that. >_<

When my sister got glasses, I was a bit jealous; certain frames would make me look a bit older. Looking 15 when you're trying to get into an MFA program doesn't exactly help. >.>

All in all, I don't think wearing glasses as a fashion statement makes you foolish. I mean, people wear fashion scarves in the summer. If someone makes a rediculous attempt at a statement with an unattractive scarf, then you may be within reason to question their judgement.

Of course sunglasses don't count in this. Unless they wear them at night.......then that just seems silly, and perhaps a bit dangerous depending on what you are doing while wearing them at night! ^_^

Kids are so strange these days. When I was a young lad and got mine in the fourth grade, glasses were uncool.

I don't really see the point, but since when have pop culture trends ever made sense?

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I've tried going without my glasses for periods of time, just because they're such a nuisance; however it always resulted in my friends urging me to put them back on, 'cause I always ended up driving them crazy for various reasons. Sometimes I'd walk right past a friend without realizing it, or someone would point out something in the distance and I wouldn't have a clue what they were referring to D:!

Though, I guess they're prescribed for a reason after all. I remember I went without them for a couple months before (when I didn't need them for certain things because I wasn't driving or attending any classes with far away blackboards/projections)... Though, when I finally needed them for something and I put them back on, I couldn't believe how much more clear everything was! I guess they're a necessary evil huh :p?

Thankfully I have never encountered anyone who has worn fake glasses.

With one possible exception, all my friends are smart people who are perfectly aware that they don't need fake glasses to confirm their intelligence.

It's not uncommon to see people wearing horn rimmed 3D glasses with the lenses punched out here.

I get asked on occasion if mine are fake (which they aren't).

Yes, and it annoys me a lot. Here's why:
I wear real glasses. My prescription is weak, but I legit cannot see things at a certain distance, and I get massive ass head aches if I don't wear them. People constantly put on my glasses and accuse me of wearing fakes. I don't know why, but it bugs the hell out of me when that happens, and then no one believes me that I have actual issues that the glasses take care of, simply because it's not uncommon for people to wear fakes.

Yes. Lots of hipsters in my town do that.
They have those big black rimmed glasses that just make them look like they're trying too hard.
Those Giant Black Rimmed Glasses look so fucking stupid and every other kid in my High school wears them. If you don't need glasses don't wear them, it just makes you seem immature to wear them just because you can, but hey maybe that's just me...

PS - I wear Glasses that I actually need in order to see things that are far away.

I know a couple of lawyers who wear fake glasses when they go to court. Apparently studies have shown that jurors trust people who wear glasses more because they think it makes them look smarter.

At my school there are a bunch of hipsters who think it is pretty sweet. Even though there are plenty of people in my school who can't afford glasses and despise these people.

Can't blame anyone that does, just for the eye protection alone they are worth wearing even without a prescription.

I wouldn't wear them to appear intelligent, but often times I've wondered what I would look like if I did wear glasses all the time. If it would change the way I have my hair cut or something like that.

Weird thought I know.

I've never met anyone who does it but I doubt it would bother me too much. I can think of far worse things [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/551110].
