Just got Fallout 2 today from Steam.

Found the first game very tough and would appreciate any advice or tips people have!

Feel free to discuss what you thought of it too, I'm curious to know what people who played Fallout 3 before the original 2 thought.

I thought it was much better than FO3, not because I'm an originalist, but because I hated FO3.

And I refuse to give you tips, as that's not how I roll (I CBA to explain why right now, as I'm really tired).

Eh that's ok I don't need an explanation. I won't lose any sleep.

I'm enjoying it so far, though I really just cannot grow to love turn based combat.

Do the rat quest in the first town. It's a good way to get a few quick levels.

I can't really give you much help beyond that because I'm stuck. It's so much harder than the first one.

Also, I played FO3 first, and I'm liking them all right. The isometric viewpoint is a little bothersome, but I got used to it fast. It's definitely a better RPG (you actually have to think through character development), but it's just lacking that something that made FO3 great.

Just to be clear, I played Fallout 3 first, then dug up the originals.

I prefer FO and FO2. Can't say I enjoyed Tactics as much though. But you don't want tips, the best way to tackle these kinds of games is by walking in blind and figuring everything out for yourself.

How you make your character will really affect how tough the game turns out. Unless you cheat using falche, there are some things any particular character will not be good at. The trick is the use items or NPCs to compensate. Use drugs to make your character more versatile. Pick your perks wisely.

Here's a few tips:

Remember to play through with different extremes of values, like IN 1 or LK 10 (and vice versa). Will bring you some truly memorable moments. And some silly equipment. And maybe an extra appendage here or there.

If you want the game to get silly easy, invest heavily in perception, small arms and aim for the eyes. A gauss rifle will kill just about anything. Just go for the eyes! And for goodness sake, LEG IT!

If you want it to get really silly, get IN 1 ST 10 and invest heavy in unarmed. This is not recommended for the beginning player, however. Just remember to keep talking to everyone.

In short, this game is silly. In the best way possible.

EDIT: Oh, and this goes for number one in the series too.

I only found F2 hard in the beginning, when you don't know the game very well yet and have little more than a sharp stick to defend yourself with. Once you get some guns and good armour, it's smooth sailing.

My advice would be to take it slow at first, and don't go exploring. In the beginning even a couple of Geckos can make your life difficult, so stick to doing some quests (as D-Mic mentioned, the rat quest is a good one, and not too difficult) until you've got some XP and guns (and ammo!). Don't go out of your way to cause trouble. By the time you hit Vault City things will be a lot easier. Sniper rifles and assault rifles are great weapons, and if you come across a Bozar, keep it. It's best small gun until much later in the game when you'll get Gauss weapons.

A melee or unarmed character will have a relatively easy time early on and is great all the way to the endgame if you know what you're doing, but I wouldn't take it for your first playthrough. I'd a small guns-focused guy in stead (big guns and energy weapons are cool too, but are very scarce for the first half of the game, and small guns are useful for the entire game except the very beginning). High Agility and Intelligence are highly recommended with an Agility of 9 being standards and an Int of 8 or 9, Perception should be medium-high (like 7 or 8) for a ranged character, and high Charisma is strictly optional but very cool. Taking Strength higher than 6 is not recommended even for a melee character, since it will be augmented by the Power Armour you will be using later in the game anyway. Gifted is the best trait bar none, Skilled is the worst. Good Natured is great for high Cha+Int characters. I'm personally a really big fan of Finesse since criticals are generally more important than raw damage in this game (causing things like knocking your enemy out to blinding him to instantly killing him), but YMMV. Fast Shot is either really awesome or really shitty, depending on your playstyle. I don't like it. Never ever buy perks that give you extra levels or extra XP, since perks are more valuable than levels and you'll never get enough levels to earn back that perk anyway.

Also, if possible, save before and after every fight and every area transition. Chances are you won't need that many saves, but it never hurts.

Funny story. Back in 1999, I played this game on a friend's computer, and the loading times between screens could be long enough to make a snack or go to the bathroom. Or wash the dishes, which I always ended up doing, because I was the only girl and none of my guy friends cared. But I didn't stop playing. I just made sure I explored every inch of every screen before I moved on. And I still play games this way, even though now I can play Dragon Age: Origins and the longest loading time is only long enough for me to think,"hm, this one's taking a minute."

Holy shit this game will make you bark with surprised laughter.

Tag.
Small.
Guns.

Seriously, I think I've beaten this game 5 or 6 times and the only time I had real trouble was when I was making a melee character. Energy weapons get very good mid to late game, but you can use small guns all the way through instead, since the Gauss Rifle is amazing enough to be just-as-good-if-not-better than most energy weaponry.

Anyway, Klamath has a lot of bullshit you might not feel like doing - that's fine, you can head to the Den relatively early. On his first playthrough, my friend went to Redding after the Den, when you should really be going there much later, after heading east to areas like vault city, modoc, gecko, etc.

Anyway, enjoy the dialogue, enjoy the characters, use the action boy perk, fast shot trait if you have trouble, (though I love precision aiming at the groin, :p) and remember that the game is broken in more ways than one, and every problem has multiple ways of solving it.

ie: 300% gambling = free money, basically. 300% barter = I can trade someone a shotgun for a shotgun and make a profit. Instead of killing someone I can talk them out of killing me, or sneak around them, etc...

Yeah I would definitely say tag small guns just because it's always useful, easy to get, and the ammo is plentiful. You can get quite a few npc allies in this one and even give them weapons and armor to equip, stims to use, and choose their fighting style so I would say do that because they can be really helpful. Also I would say find vic as fast as possible because after you do the missions to free him you get some nice loot.
