It' a Western RPG. Or at least what the media keeps referring to it as.
Thats strange, i didn't see many gunslingers and horses in it.

In all truth, Role Playing games can't really be done exceptionally well on a computer/console. They're much better in person. But Fallout 3 got pretty close.. and it has guns.. wouldn't say First person shooter as the third person capabilities.. and there are ways to completely bypass the first person shooting.. so lets call it an Action RPG?

ehm did you look at the sheriff in megaton?
Yeah, just some weirdo with authority issues and a silly hat.
What about the Regulators? Too bad horses couldn't survive the radiation.

The combat in Fallout 3 is shooter-like; you point with your gun in realtime, and then you hit the enemy. However, how well you aim and how well you'll hit will be determined by your stats, skills and abilities. The same goes for Mass Effect.

The dialogue and story and the (mild) choice & consesequence you face in both Mass Effect and Fallout 3 is what make them (action) RPGs, not shooters like Gears of War or Call of Duty 4.

And Mass Effect can best be compared to a third person squad based tactical shooter - when it comes to the combat, I mean.

Simply put, it's VATS that changes Fallout 3 from a true hybrid into more of a straightforward RPG, at least as straightforward as Oblivion was, anyway. Come to think of it, you could play Oblivion as a sort of bow-and-arrow based FPS if you really wanted to (and I have, with a little help from the Bosmer's racials.)

I'd call it a PARFFPRPS (pronounced "PAHR-feh-fep-erps") - Post-Apocalypse Retro-Futurist First-Person Role-Playing Shooter.

But, most importantly, it's simply a damn fun game.

I thought FPSRPG was the official designation. It makes sense. It's a shooter, and most of the time, the camera is in first person, plus it's definitely got plenty of RPG elements.

FPS/RPG or shooter RPG

same genre as Deus Ex, Bloodlines, Mass Effect.

It's an RPG first (as little as that means), but it still helps alot if you know how to aim, lead, strafe, lob, etc.
