I had over 40,000! I could always repair my own stuff and find enough ammo to keep me going. All I did was explore and come back from each exploration with 3 bags full of crap to sell off.

P.s. There was absolutely no case of "player.additem 000000F 40000". And I'm not kidding.

EDIT: I just checked and I actually have over 45,000.
Bloody hell.

I think I had about 3000

I had well over 10,000 caps, over 1000 of every ammo type, a HUGE stockpile of weapons and armor, every house upgrade, and over 100 Rad Away, 200 Ice Cold Nuka-Colas, and 256 Stimpacks.

I've got about 12k, with easily that much again in stuff to sell as and when the merchants build their caps back up to a point where it's worth my while. In the meantime, I find myself just trading stuff for goods rather than caps - giving energy weapons, power armour and junk to the guy at Fort Independence in return for 5.56 ammo and stimpaks, various stuff for my house from the woman in Megaton... that kinda lark.

I have around 799 caps but I just did a pritty big transaction where I bought about 3000 caps worth of stuff (My house). I kept wondering why I wasent getting any caps and my suff was in such bad shape. I found out that you have to be willing to pick up more stuff. Just because its worth 50 caps and a wieght of 35 (somthing like that) dousent mean you shouldent pick it up. Just be willing to pick up more stuff and go back to your house more. Also have a container with nothing but stuff your going to sell.

I have recently discovered a great method. I was recently around Paradise Falls and there were 2 guys with Berhams (idk how to spell). I decided to pay to get all their stimpacks and radaway and repairs. Then i killed both of them, took everything else important, and took my money back from them and whatever they had. Then i opened up their stuff on the cows. I made alot of caps that day.

Im probably not the first person to think of this lol

Here's a quick way to get LOTS OF CAPS:

I have 60 000 caps, got it by much tedious waiting and trading of every damn thing I could pick up, repair or steal.

Invest in the traders... go to canterbury commons and talk to uncle roe, then spend the 2000 upgrading Lucky Harith, Crow and the other two wierdos... it'll be the best money you spend in the game.

Put lots of points into your repair skill early on. Then pick up every raider, talon, mutie weapon and armour you find and repair them so you can hold more of em in your inventory. Attack every enclave outpost you see because they have the most valuable goodies: A fully repaired Lazer rifle will net you 999 caps!

Warp to megaton and go outside, the traders come in two hour spells so just wait for them in hour long waits, (they are there from around 6am to 6pm) and sell all your ill gotten gains to them as they will have over 1000 caps each to spend which will replenish every 3 days.

Repeat this mind numbingly boring activity until you're rich... YAY!

My rule is never to pay for anything if I don't have to. I always pick up as much junk as is economically feasible for use as barter when I come into cities. That way I can rob the weapon and chem shops blind in a perfectly legitimate way. My main character had the entirety of the Wasteland's GDP in his pocket by endgame.

2,751. Of course I was playing as a goody-goody two-shoes and by the time I got to level 10, I just yelled "Fuck it!" and gave up. Maybe I'll start again when I get my new video card. Besides, bullets are much more important anyway. Oh, and am I the only one who realized that hard currency was reinstated in Fallout 2?

Also get ol' painless. 100% accuracy and uses .32, best weapon in the game.
Couldn't decide between that and Lincoln's repeater, but in the end I just loved the satisfying thunderclap bang of Ol' Painless so much it became my long ranger of choice!

Still prefer the Xuanlong Assault rifle though...

about 4000 by the end, they completely lost their value about half way through.
I got a rediculous amount as well and ammo became so easy to get and the game lost it's appeal. Fallout 3 gets worse everytime I look at it. I used to love it. But now it is plain boring...

Get high repair and you'll make loads of money-fully repaired items are worth so much more than their bad condition counterparts. Also the named weapons can be repaired by normal weapons of the same type. also I found that charisma is a waste of time as you can just kill the traders and their brahmin for all their stuff and caps.

If you play as good character with low Speech & Repair who specializes in Big Guns or Energy Weapons it can be quite difficult to accumulate a respectable amount of caps. Obviously if you're a thief who specializes in Small Guns then you'll have tens of thousands by the end of the game (assuming you can bothered to pick everything up and sell it).

When I played as my most recent character I spent every cap I had on ammo just to ensure I never ran out. God knows where you'd keep 5000 Minigun rounds though.
