Why bother to have any? It seems like its a BIG waste of time because unless you have the PC version of the game. They are just cannon fodder, for instance I was walking through Minefield with Dogmeat and as I am trying to disable the mines; the damn dog runs to attack a nearby raider and gets us both killed in the chain reaction.

I'd have to agree, having a companion usually involved in you having to babysit them most of the time. Though i did find Fawkes very useful during the last mission,

These companions could of easily affected the ending of the game though, i'm sure many of you know by now what the ending of fallout 3 holds in store for you. But it's flawed in the fact you could of easily had Fawkes or the Ghoul (Forget his name) go into the control room and use the code *sigh*

I believe the companions weren't added until later on in the development process. They initially planned it to be an all solo adventure. In a way this mimics the development of the original Fallout. Dogmeat isn't supposed to survive forever. The devs have even said in interviews that the ending was forced and unfair and that they should have done it better.

In any case, Fawkes is pretty good, he can actually kill stuff and you don't have to worry about him dying real often. Cross is decent once she picks up a real gun. I've heard Charon is pretty good with his shotgun. All the others are mostly for kicks.

You're pissed cause your dog wasn't smart enough to avoid a mine? it's a fucking dog!

In my opinion, Charon and Fawkes are both damn useful

Well on the PC version, I purchased Charon, he said he needed to do one thing, walked into the barracks and stood dead still in the middle of floor, without being able to interact with him, I tried to sell him back to the guy I bought him off, but he'd frozen too. Tht was 2000 caps down the drain.

So no, companions are pretty pointless.

Fawkes is quite amazing despite being a bit TOO good I'll explain:

My first encounter with a Super Mutant Benamouth was obviously scripted and Yet the Brotherhood of Steel still killed him.

Afterwards I was pretty much wandering with Fawkes and encountered the one at the White house and the one at the train station...it just so happened Fawkes decided that in his Gung Ho style to just swoop in just as I'm loading My Nukes and Kill them both.

I'm lucky if I get a Raider Killed these days with Fawkes on My side....(I now know how Robin feels when Batman gets all the credit)

I only ever used them as packhorses, to be honest. They could carry more stuff than I could alone.

The Mr gutsy is alright. He moves slow enough that you USUALLY don't kill him along with whatever you are attacking with explosives. I don't know how many times I've blown Dog meat up.

Fawkes Makes me feel VIP. Anyone who looks at me gets laser gatlinged.

Interesting thing about Charon's shotgun: even though it's a combat shotgun, it's pump action and has Zero Spread, essentially making it an NPC-only reskinned Lincoln's Repeater.

That's just a glitch. If it worked, he would have walked up to Azurkal (the guy you bought him from) and shot him. By the way, Charon is a really good companion. He's specialized in Stealth, so he's good for a character like mine, who's also stealth, and he has very good Perception, often noticing enemies before they even show up on your little radar thing.

I mostly chose to go my own way, due to the fact of having ot baby-sit them, but i also liked the idea of the "lone Wanderer" thing, i even kept Dogmeat at my house in Megaton.

I invited companions on my adventures as storage.

"Would you like to trade equipment?" "Just hold all this shit I found and plan to sell when we get to a dealer."

That was about the extent of my relationship with the companions. Fawkes was pretty cool though.

I forgot Dogmeat in my first post! How could I?

Anyway, he's awesome. I actually cared what happened to him, he was so likable.

Wait who is Cross?

Anyways they are good for carrying stuff like junk and other stuff to sell or repair your equipment.

Charon: good all around good, especially with tesla power armor, I recommend for weapons; a chinese assault rifle and a shikebab

Fawkes: good for combat roles, te'll him to wait outside non-hostile areas to avoid a slaughterfest.

Butch: worthless

Sargent RL-3: not much survivibility, would've done better as a sentry bot.

Dogmeat:send to Vault 101 and retreive accordingly for certain situations such as minefield (after disposing of arkansas),the allyway in seward square (after disposing of the mad preacher without blowing the place up),finding the firelance and ammo, etc... to pick up ammo and weapons.

Clover: average

Star Paladin Cross: Equip with tesla and she is slightly more resilient than fawkes, I reccomend for weapons; Plasma rifle and flamer

Jericho: average

NOTE:If your not using it, equiping an ally with the alien blaster can make them extremely powerful.

A possible ally/member of BOS faction, in the citadel.
