I bought fallout 3 last year, and with the purchase of my new computer I was looking forward to roaming the wasteland in better graphics than what a 8800GT could give me.

So I installed the game, patched it to 1.7, then fired it up. Reach the main menu, still no worries. Then I click on "New Game" and it loads for 5 seconds before crashing back to the desktop. I thought it was just some random bug at first but after a fifth try and crashing, even I knew I couldn't be that unlucky

Reinstalled, redownloaded the patch, updated everything i could think of and it still crashes. Around this time I thought maybe the disk gathered a little too much dust on my desk so I installed it on another computer to see if it worked and guess what? It worked fine there.

Its not my computer, cos I don't think there's anything a GTX295, i-7 920 and 4 gigs of RAM can't handle yet (That is, until Crysis 2 comes out) and not because I'm on Vista because the test computer is also Vista and it worked fine.

The fallout forums was absolutely no help and tech support didn't provide any support whatsoever, so you guys are my absolute last hope in roaming the wasteland and blasting Three-Dog in the face just because I can.

EDIT:
Found out it was all my ASUS software (smartdoctor etc.) that was screwing with Fallout 3. Thanks to all those who helped anyway =)

Try without the patch to see if that's the problem. Then maybe check the usual stuff: that you have the latest (stable) drivers etc.

Try updating your video drivers and if that doesn't work try a different patch version. I'm running Fallout on 1.5 .

Done and done. No change, except I think it loads slightly longer before crashing

Try downloading and installing the unofficial patch.
You really should provide people with a link to these things: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3808

Hmm... I'm not sure, it runs (albeit slowly with my 8500GT). Try turning down all the settings to low, and trying again.

True, but it just makes it easier for someone who is probably already under stress.

I wouldn't worry. That set-up will cut through any title in the next few years like a hot knife through butter. Crysis 2 will (Apparently) be less taxing that Crysis 1, so you're set.

As for fallout 3, is it just that game, or do all of them crash on loading screen?

Try loading it without the patch. Or if you have any mods installed, try disabaling those.

Already tried. And I don't really do mods anyway

Just Fallout 3, although I've been getting occasional crashes on COD 4

hm... Well, as said and linked above, try using the Unofficial patch, that has been known to fix many crashes.

And are you playing while signed into Games for Windows Live?

NEW QUESTION:

So it's my second time through fallout3. the first time i ran it on ultra settings with no problems. This time however after a full re-install and update to 1.7 its running terrible even on medium setting with no screen fx ??? Now i'm guessing im about to answer my own question but i DID backclock my video drivers to get around a vista crash while running city of heros. If i had to guess this is my problem. But what im asking is that if anyone else has had this happen or is there a possiblilty that it ISNT my vid drivers.

Other symptons i get are a right hand screen flash occasionally of the green of the main menu trying to bleed it's way into gameplay. Body parts in vats being just about unselectable. ANd any area of high detail or when i hit cap city its like i get a massive memory leak and everything jsut comes to a slideshow. =/

Try turning off SLI in the drivers?
That GTX295 is basically SLI in a single dual-slot solution, Fallout 3 may not like SLI much.

Well I didn't boot it up so it shouldn't be on. Should it be on?

I would try it and see what happens.

Games for Windows has been known to mess with Fallout in many ways.

Tried. Crashed. Sighed.

Have you defragged the file? That might be the issue.
nope. But if that was the problem, shouldn't the test computer have crashed as well?
