I dunno, I still think the story is a good reason to have some form of contempt for it. gameplay wise it was solid, but story wise it was a damp piece of soggy bread.TestECull said:Fallout 3 kept the series from falling into obscurity.
It's a Fallout game. Time to stop hating it for silly reasons and find a legit one. Like, say, the game engine, which is a buggy pile of ass.
So having a crappy story, bad ending, boring characters, nonsensical explanations and crappy RPG elements aren't "legit" reasons?TestECull said:Fallout 3 kept the series from falling into obscurity.

I loved the whole political story of New Vegas, very rarely do games feature politics and society as a main focus and New Vegas did a great job in my opinion by giving us many factions all with different views and objectives.Xaositect said:Edit: Oh and from a storytelling point of view, New Vegas is the greatest thing ever to happen to the Fallout series. After 1, 2 and "3" I was sick to death of the "Forced Evolutionary Plot Device" (and that fucking GECK isnt much better). Glad to see it was kept to nothing but minor references in New Vegas.
At ;east you could kill her, but that would mean losing a lot of useful stuff. Oh well, at least I could kill Three Dog without losing much, and therefore listen to the radio without some guy howling into my ear.Rawne1980 said:The gameplay was great and the story was okay. The voice acting left a lot to be desirted (oh come on, how many people wanted to reach through their monitor and choke Moira Brown ... her voice bugged the crap out of me) and some of the side quest dialogues were .... strange .... but not in a good way.
Yeah, but being Bethesda they have a rule that the best voice actor they hire must die or at least have small screen time *cough*the emperor*cough*.However it had Liam Neeson (who died in quite possibly the worst scene ever for a major character death) so that makes it okay in my book.
Yes, and I can also say that i didn't want F3 to be like this. If I wanted a gritty post-apocalyptic survivial game, I would play STALKER or something.Slayer_2 said:but if I wanted a comedy, I'd watch Two and a Half Men or something
So Fallout 2 is a bad game because it gives you the opportunity to role-play your character and give you options?geier said:How about the opposite ?
I played Fallout 1 and 2 after 3 and i think the first two where rubbish.
Oh great, you can be a prostitute, o wow, someone makes omlettes out of deathclaw eggs wohooo soooo funny.
To be honest, f### the first games.
Yeah, I played the originals after 3 and I ended liking them much, much more. The amount of ways to play those games are ridiculous.Dexter111 said:Btw. to all the people calling on "rose-tinted glasses" (I haven't read the thread but I bet there is a few), I didn't ever play the first Fallout before Fallout 3 came out. I played a demo when I was still in my early teens and didn't "get it" e.g. the combat system and what you have to do... maybe it was just a bad demo cause I randomly attacked people in a settlement and ended up getting killed and I ended up playing it after Fallout 3 and it is still miles fucking above that game in about every way. It's actually one of my favorite games by now, and I also enjoy it more than Fallout 2.
What about the vault filled with Garys? I laughed my ass off in there.Ryans Solution said:Yes... well fallout 3 was good, it was missing the humour.
I didn't find much of the WW stuff without help, but I did find Jimmy's Well which came with that awesome BB gun. But I found a lot more Wild Wasteland stuff in Old World Blues like Dr. Mobius mentioning his Plan 9 and the cyber dogs playing poker. Old World Blues was the funnest thing I did in New Vegas and it was worth the 10 bucks I payed.Hotshots said:Too right. I chose that trait every time I played New Vegas. Finding Indy in the fridge made me quite literally Lologrebushi said:Only thing i wish is that the wild wasteland trait was just an option that started on, since its what i traditionally think of as "fallout"
Same here, with the exception that I played Tactics before 3, but that game isn't all that good.AlternatePFG said:Yeah, I played the originals after 3 and I ended liking them much, much more. Playing new vegas felt, simply put, like coming home again. I have been playing it basically non stop since it came out. The last game I did what with was... well... probably fallout 2.Hotshots said:First and foremost, I love Fallout 3. I fucking adore the thing like it was my own. I love the whole series in such a way. I was recently re-playing the whole series (including tactics) as a remedy for the summer draught. Now, since I haven't played most of the games since maybe 2005, I played a bit of each to see if they're all working. When it got to testing F3, the game felt remarkably different from the previous ones (not because of game play or new perspective I should mention). It felt very dark and, well, not very like a fallout game(?). Then I tested New Vegas and straight away it felt like the black isle games. More humor and it felt familiar.
F2(short of being my favorite game of all time) and New Vegas feel extremely similar, which probably explains my fondness of the latter.
Has anyone else felt this way? That Fallou 3 felt 'different'?
That's funny because I thought that was one of the worst moments. It reminded me of Oblivion when Martin defeats Mehrunes Dagon, I felt robbed of my importance, instead it was given to some large and invincible character who took the feeling of importance away from me.theriddlen said:Fallout 3 is a very good game, but it only has one awesome moment, that is Liberty Prime in action,
Bingo.Necromancer Jim said:Fallout 3 was a great game on it's own, but the writing was bad. The dialogue was atrocious, the story was rubbish, and it just felt completely out of the rest of the Fallout universe.
If you wanted Fallout 1 and 2, you should have played Fallout 1 and 2. Admit it, Fallout 3 was doomed from the start, when it comes to the fanboy group. Oh no, it's made by Bethesda, it's 3D, has a FPS/TPS perspective, and real-time combat. Burn it at the stake. And Fallout 3 is far, FAR from a gritty survival game, with a lot of modding (about a year's worth, in my case), you can sort of get a survival feel going, but the vanilla game is a laugh, you can unload 20 rounds into an unarmoured human, and he shrugs it off...Imbechile said:Yes, and I can also say that i didn't want F3 to be like this. Well clearly it must be, because you say so. Your word is God, and differing opinions are VERBOTEN. Get off your high horse. Fallout was never hard, and yes, you COULD beat the game in the worst armor possible. How do I know? Because I've actually done it. Start to finish, wearing nothing but Vault suit.Kashrlyyk said:No, it is not. They completely destroyed the character and skill system. There is a video where someone makes the worst unarmed combat fighter that is possible in Fallout 3 and then beats up 3 raiders on hard difficulty. Chance to hit? Over 80% as shown in VATS!!! Good luck trying that on any of the proper fallout games.Jennacide said:...
Fallout 3 is still a proper Fallout game.....
The character system is a very important part of a RPG.
I've never played a fallout game before 3.I did play Tactics before 3, but that game isn't all that good, so I'm not nostalgia-blinded.Slayer_2 said:If you wanted Fallout 1 and 2, you should have played Fallout 1 and 2. It seems to me that whether you like Fallout 3 is based on whether you were a fan of the previous games or not. I didn't like them much, so Fallout 3 was a (surprising) jewel for me. I expected it to be garbage, but played it once and was hooked. Fans of the previous games expected Fallout 3 to be more of the same, and were disappointed when it wasn't. The don't enjoy the game because they compare it to Fallout 1 or 2 at every turn, when they should really just enjoy the game for what it is.
