Fallout 3's Engine can't handle ladders.

The only game I've ever seen really use ladders to good effect was Medieval 2: Total War. Maybe Mount&Blade, but that's being VERY charitable to their siege AI.

Really, though, what good are ladders in games without chutes?

I don't like ladders anyway, stairs are better, because you can shoot easier on stairs than onto ladders ; your hands are free. I'm for banning ladders and replacing them with portable stairs.

I started to notice only after I started using mods to improve gameplay. I didn't really think it was a problem and I do admit that the AI for the NPCs in the game could make using ladders difficult. With that in mind, I don't blame them.

Great, now i feel weird.

On a lighter note i never really minded The lack of ladders. Stairs are cool and climbing a ladder in these games would more than likely see you bum rushed by a deathclaw or bored stiff while your character stows his stuff and climbs. I never really wanted to watch my guy climb, insta travel up ladders saved some boring time.

Uhm, not that I suspect that ladders would induce orgasms, however climbable ladders done realistically are nice details to First Person games in my opinion. I dislike the way that some FPS games just lets you climb up ladders by pushing yourself against them and jus look either up or down (sometimes without breaking your speed at all).

I like the way that Killzone made ladder climbing (you have to put away your weapon and you can see your amrs reach out and grab the ladderbars when you climb up, and when you want to get down you can "slide" down the ladder more rapidly). Other games have probably done something similar, but it's a nice touch, and does actually hold some potential!

I mean just imagine a Fallout game where you've found a largely empty ruined building, BUT the doors are open to a pitch black elevator shaft leading several stories down. What could be down there? I don't know, but I'll be sure to try and find out. And thus the descent begins. Who knows if the shaft will collapse on top of me while im climbing up or down the long ladder? Who knows if some mutated freak knows how to scale sheer walls and decide to jump me as im vulnerable in my descent or ascent?

My point being: even something so trivial as climbing a ladder can be turned into something exciting by the right game designer.

It's at times like this we need Ladder Guy.

It's a shame he's no longer with Doraleous and Associates :)

Except that with the Assassin's Creed engine, you could swim, they just didn't let you in the first game.

To be fair, I have seen NPCs climb up ladders in Fallout 3, but it might have only been in Point Lookout. And the only way that I'd enjoy ladders being climbable is if they have the system like in Gears of War where it takes, like, only two-three seconds to traverse up and down them because the motion is so fast. Some of you should know what I'm talking about.

Edit: Although when the NPCs reach the top, they have no choice but to vanish into thin air as they are transported to the other side.

Do I think the game would have been better in the slightest with climeable ladders? No.

Although I do think it's something very minor to address in future engines.

suprisingly i did notice it actually, but didn't care, so it doesn't bug me really, although being able to use ladders to get to secret rooftops or w/e in the games would be kinda cool.

I never noticed the lack, but:

Don't really care, it's not like what I look for in a game is the ladder=based action.

This is all very nice but where the fuck is TES 5!?!?!?

Unless this means that ladders will play a major part in the next elder scrolls game.

Not having ladders doesn't bother me but the game engine has so many other issues. That thing's fucking terrible, Bethesda need a new one.
