So, Fallout 4 has been out for long enough for modders to start fixing what Bethesda broke (Looking at you dialogue wheel-o-Bioware!!) and I thought that we should have a reccomendations thread for people here to make modding the game easier.

Plus, I'm starting to see the usual "Weekly mods" videos on Youtube popping up so now is as good a time as any!

The Escapist has also given a list of 8 recommended mods so check here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/features/galleryoftheday/14987-8-Fallout-4-Mods-for-Early-Adopters] for that if you missed it.

Anyway, my recommendations are:
1. NewDialog: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/619/?
This mod not only acts like FullDialogue but replaces the conversation wheel-o-bioware with the dialogue menu system used in 3 and NV.

2. Craftable Ammo: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/798/?
So, I can mod my weapon any way I want but I can't craft bullets for it? Uhhh... Well this mod fixes that and let's you make any kind of ammo at your Chemistry Station provided that you have the parts for it.

3. Touch of Green: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/377/?
For those who felt that the scrub that you can't clear away is way too brown and dead, this mod makes some of the scrub and grass of Boston a little bit more alive. It doesn't do trees though.

4. Darker Nights: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/191/?
The usual must have mod for masochists like myself that like to stumble around in the dark and trip over sleeping super mutant suiciders.

5. (Un)expected John Cena: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/427/?
This one is mostly here for people who want things a little more silly, it replaces John in the game audio for Codsworth with everyone's favorite, tired wrestling meme.

Bonus: Lowered Weapons: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/522/?
I don't like this for most guns but it's damn near mandatory for the gigantic Institute guns not to take up the entire right hand side of your screen in basic gameplay.

Please feel free to list whatever other mods you want, either from Nexus or Steam Workshop. Let's see if we can keep everyone up to date with the bleeding edge of Fallout 4 mods.

Already a thread about this.

Also, I'm not really seeing the point of "Lowered Weapons". Is there a reason why you can't just holster your weapon when you're not using it? (Hold down the 'reload' button, if people didn't know.)

Bugger, I missed that one, also it's been dead for 4 days so adding this could be getting close to Necro.

Lowered Weapons just changes the default position of your gun outside of using it in combat, and in some cases you want your gun out in case you get ambushed. So, if you are using an Institute gun like that you can't see to your right. This mod, as I pointed out, isn't really necessary for most guns but the Institute ones desperately need it so that you can see when wandering around dangerous areas outside of combat. It's also good for role players.

Well for now it's 100% lowered and gets really awkward in combat and while using big weapons like the fatman.
So you are trading one small problem for two small problems, maybe when you get the option to lower your weapon with a button or raising again while in combat I will try, for now it doesn't look very good despite the intentions.

How do the mods do so early and without the toolset (I believe its not out anyway) are they stable enough or what?
Most of these are just tweaking minor things in the game files so far which is why we haven't seen any large scale overhaul mods yet. Plus, it's the same engine they have been using for 13 years so modders know how to manipulate it by now.

Since they are low level mods they are likely considered pretty stable but they are mods so it's always fingers crossed as to whether they want to play nice with each other in their load order.

Apart from Darker Nights I'm also a fan of Towbie's Realistic Weapon Sounds. The peashooter shotgun and combat rifle were slightly grating.

My favourite so far has to be the atom bomb baby mod though....

You get to shoot Shaun at people so thats fun.
That video made my chuckle as well so that's a plus. Finally, a real use for Bethesda's horrifying Baby Abomination model.

That's a nice one, I can't wait to try Darker Nights with that and the Hardcore Mode mod that someone is inevitably making somewhere.

Don't know of any specific mods that exist, but one I would like to see I call

Radiant Everstorm. While not permanent, I want the radiation storms to happen WAY more often, and do significantly more radiation damage when they do. As they are, it's a very small amount of rad damage, and it seems (to me anyway based on my random encounters with it, that it only really happens in the NW area of the map. I can't recall running into it further east, or south. I'd like the storm to happen EVERYWHERE, more common than any other type of weather, and do like 10 rads a strike, with way more strikes.

Right now, even without any Rad-X, rad gear, or perks to provide resistance, it barely makes a dent in my health. So it's not that much of an actual threat.

We can call it Darude Radstorm... I'm not sorry. Still, yeah, I hope that we get plenty of mods like that which alter the weather. I remember that one of the top ones for Fallout 3 was Radioactive Rain from Enhanced Weather. A fix for which can be found here: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/11723/? if you are feeling like having a poke about. It also has a link to the main mod in there for your ease of use.

is the darker nights similar to fellout from FO3/NV in functionality? as in, does it incorporate dynamic lighting to be more realistic at night?
Judging by these screenshots it does.
Without the mod:

With the mod:

Other picture for reference:

Reminds me of Metro a little bit with it being that dark and rain slicked.

Well... they kinda do:

Rank 2 of Night Person gives you night vision while sneaking at night.

They happen most commonly around the SW, around the Glowing Sea area.

Looking at the game code (by opening it in TES5EDIT), according to the climate data there's a 4% chance of a rad storm anywhere on the map, and a 50% chance of a rad storm in the Glowing Sea area.
The lightning strike frequency is just a simple variable, and each strike applies a MGEF (magic effect) to the player, which has an easily customizable magnitude.

So the mod you're asking for would be really easy to make.

...

In fact, let me just say, I don't really understand why so many people hate the Creation Engine so much. Because there's no other game engine that I know of that is as configurable and moddable as this on a game's release.
Personally, I love the flexibility of this engine.

Sweet! And if I at all trusted myself to go tinkering around with code, I might take a stab at fiddling with those figures! xD However I don't, so I might wait for someone else to do it and just download it.

I'm totally in agreement with Darude Radstorm, or perhaps Radude Sandstorm? xD

The Full Dialog mod has changed the game for me. So much better than the default conversations.

I'd list the other ones I recommend, but I already did that somewhere... Where was it? OH YEAH. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/features/galleryoftheday/14987-8-Fallout-4-Mods-for-Early-Adopters

Already plugged you in the OP good sir:
The Escapist has also given a list of 8 recommended mods so check here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/features/galleryoftheday/14987-8-Fallout-4-Mods-for-Early-Adopters] for that if you missed it.
Also, is it just me, or does it seem like dialog mods are exceptionally popular for the game so far? The top two mods on Nexus are both ones that fix the Bethesda dialog system after all.

Oh, and this modder has a fantastic sense of humour:
http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2617/?
A: Hey, when we make soups why are we using this dirty water?
B: It's got radioactive isotopes. It's what plants crave. For flavor.
A: But we built these huge water purifiers and don't know how to fill up empty cartons at the creek so we're having trouble finding dirty water.
B: What if we just add a tiny bit of NUCLEAR WASTE into our pure water?
A: That sounds like a swell idea. Let me scrap this Blast Radius board game and we'll get cooking.

Having trouble finding enough dirty water to sate your need for delicious soups and stews? Have way too much purified water because you built that overkill purifier for your piddly little settlement? Don't want to use one of those mods that have you craft FLAVORLESS clean soups? Well, this mod is for you!

I also increased the yield of the Purified Water recipe slightly but added a requirement for Wood (for making activated charcoal for filtering). Some water is still lost because - let's face it - your duct-taped together distillation set up isn't really watertight and so there are major losses.

10 Pure Water + 1 Nuclear Material = 10 Dirty Water
3 Dirty Water + 1 Wood = 2 Purified Water

Enjoy.

NOTE: Consuming nuclear material and tainted water is hazardous to health and not recommended by this mod author. I disclaim all responsibility to any mutations, cancers, or freakish superpowers you may develop as a result of said consumption.

waaaaaiiiiiiiittt a minute, you seem to be playing this game rather early in it's lifespan.

what happened to all that scorn for people who bought the game early?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

just messing.

but seriously, the first 2 pictures in that spoiler tag are either the same picture, or there is no difference.
A friend bought it on his PC so I've been helping him to fix it. Also, my scorn reserves have been drained by several other events recently and await the next rains for a full harvest of Scorn Corn to grind down and make fresh meal of Scorn.

I checked again and they are different, it may be your PC's brightness / contrast settings making them appear similar. However, look at the shadows in the pictures. One is significantly darker than the other in the shadows.

Alright, I actually have something worth recommending and adding to this thread!

no dotdotdot

It makes the inventory font size smaller to accommodate items with long names, so the names don't get truncated off with a "..."
