Fallout collection/Windows 7 incompatibility.

Alright, well, as I was passing through my local target, I saw the original fallout collection for $15. Needless to say, I bought it, as I had been wanting to play the original games for a long time after playing the third and loving it. So, I get home and pop the disc into my laptop, wait for the installation process to finish, and then click the shortcut for fallout 1. The game loads up and... Color corruption! Half the pixels on the screen were in bands of rainbow, which irratated me. Fallout 2 did the exact same thing. The only games that worked were the HD version of fallout one and Fallout tactics.

So, after much frustation, I got on to google, and searched "Fallout collection color corruption" and read through some similar complaints, only to find out that it was My Windows 7 that was causing the issue. I found that the Fallout 1 High resolution patch, and fallout 2 high resolution patch were supposed to fix the problem. I installed the fallout 1 patch, and it worked just as it should have. However, the Fallout 2 patch didn't fix anything, it just lead to an error stating: "The instruction at (INSERT NUMBER HERE) Referenced Memory at (INSERT NUMBER HERE)" and then something about the action not being able to be completed. I uninstalled and reinstalled the patch multiple times, to no avail, leaving fallout 2 unplayable and myself rather frustrated. So, if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem that I am clueless about, please chime in, also feel free to ***** about your problems.

Press Alt + Tab while playing the game to minimize it, then open it again. it sometimes takes a few tries, but this usually fixes it.

OK, I signed up just to answer to this thread. I will attempt to solve common problems with Fallout and Windows 7.

If you are unable to install Fallout due to a video error:
1. Disable then reenable SLI. Done!

If you receive an error while trying to install the patch:
1. Find the patch file and rename it to Fallout.zip
2. Open it with WinZip, WinRar, or 7zip.
3. Extract all files onto the main Fallout directory, overwriting all files. Done!

To fix the "rainbow graphics" follow these instructions:
1. Right click anywhere on desktop and click "Screen Resolution"
2. Start up Fallout while the Screen Resolution window is open. Done!

I just had this problem with my new laptop, I installed the HR patch and switching from 8 to 16 bit colour did the trick.

Also applies to most 16 bit colour games (C&C1, Starcraft 1, etc).

Oh, and welcome to The Escapist!

After testing it with Starcraft, couldn't you just right click on the shortcut, go to the compatability options and enable 'run in 256 colors'?

You could, I suppose. Try it and see.

I fixed the same problem with Fallout 2 in Win 7 64bit.

- Installed fallout 2 fresh from CD
- Installed Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch (http://news.filefront.com/unofficial-fallout-2-patch-final-version)
- Installed sfall (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sfall)
- Installed High Res Patch v2.2b(http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout2_High_Resolution_Patch)

In f2_res.ini set the resolution you want to run and the colour bits to 16, i.e:

[MAIN]
;##################################################################################################################
;Set the screen resolution here
SCR_WIDTH=1440
SCR_HEIGHT=900

;Set the number of colours here
; 8 for 8bit(original)
; 16 for 16bit colour (set only if your not using Sfall with graphics modes 4 or 5)
COLOUR_BITS=16

ddraw.ini also has some stuff to play with, turn on directx9 for instance.

I've had some older games do this, I found that sometimes they can't resize your resolution so just try going to old school settings before hand like as low as 800x600 and it can fix it.

Hey guys I was wondering if you can help me out. I have windows 7 just installed all the patches to fix the color issue and got fallout 2 to run in high def. I just want to play through the game (this time around) with a super character. The save game editor falche2 does not seem to work. Does anyone have an editor for this game that will work with windows 7? Thanks in advance.

ok i want to thank everyone for all of thier help and suggestions. i read through all the posts above this one and i found the the problem with the rainbow colors.. (the only issue i had) can be fixed by just right clicking on your desktop (windows 7 of course) and select screen resolution. then just start the game as was suggested above Again thanks roadster.. (note: you do NOT need to change any setting or make any downloads to fix the color problem..) this also worked for fallout 2 aswell but i have not tested tactics..
