Kaku's warning reminds me of this 2003 article:

Wow, I remember when the Escapist wasn't flooded with people who just up and spout useless hateful things instead of contributing to what could be an intellectual conversation.

The doctor obviously didn't come on to inform us that a video game is not real, (he in fact is just answering questions that are being asked to him), but he is providing a bit of education while tying it to a fun medium. Heaven forbid any of you learn anything.

Besides, in the current age of games, a big thing goes into research and realism. Fallout 3 never advertised to do this, but there indeed are people out there who would assume that the time scale in Fallout 3 just might be accurate.

Um. Isn't Mass Effect set centuries in the future? The technology (according to lore) for the Mass Effect relays and FTL travel were discovered when they unearthed an alien artifact, jumping technology forward 200 years. Mass effect is set 200 years in the future (IIRC) so that would mean the technology is 400 years in the future.

My hopes for a Fallout style post-apocalyptic world died of radiation poisoning after watching Threads [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090163/]. Now I have nothing to look forward to in the event of a global nuclear war. Phooey!

Ah man, I love Dr Michio Kaku, he did a really cool series on the future of technology for the BBC a year ago. Seriously eye-opening stuff.

But what about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? though I doubt localized space time anomalies are very plausible...

Because if Fallout had gone for a realistic nuclear holocaust, it would have just been that post-nuke scene from Modern Warfare 1 strung out over 100 hours.

Yes. That... wasn't hateful at all.

Yeah, it was a bit hateful, but that has been building for a couple of weeks and just had to vent it. Though, to my defence, I did at least also provide comentary on the topic at hand instead of just going "WHAT! A GAME ISN'T REAL! OMG!" and such.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the point of this was. It's not like anyone thought Fallout was realistic. Some of the fucked up things in Fallout aren't even a result the nuclear war, but rather all the ridiculous experiments that had gone awry in the Fallout universe (example; FEV). So thinking that a nuclear war alone could cause a Fallout scenario doesn't make sense.

So yeah, he's pretty much saying what anyone with common sense would understand. This is like saying that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games aren't an accurate representation of modern Chernobyl.
Totally in agreement.

It's always been said that Fallout is set in a wasteland that was based on the technological advancements and thoughts/theories of the 1940s/50s, with a few key differences. The silicon chip, AFAIK, was never invented in the Fallout universe - it's why everything operates on valves and so forth. Heck, you can tell just by looking at things in the Fallout world - The cars, the adverts, the buildings.

Bit different. That game only has one nuclear explosion (Chernobyl blowing up again) while we're talking about all out nuclear war. But yeah, equally as unrealistic, especially in relation to mutants and space time anomalies.

So what, your saying that when I Level up in November, I'm not getting the Computer Whiz perk? Awww.

Guess it's back to the Mentats then.

In related news, there where no dragons in the dark ages, no vampires in prague and it isn't possible to shoot fireballs from your hands..

What part of fantasy does he not get.
Ofcourse radiation does not give you call mutant powers in real life. Assuming you dont die of radiation poisoning directly you get cancer. But that would make a pretty dull game..
