It was those crafty Canadians.

The U.S. is Canada's beard.

I figure you aren't supposed to know really. It's a war that resulted in the wasteland. It's all messed up. And it never changes and all that.
No Canada is the U.S.'s hat
Indeed.

As for who fired first it is clear to all but the most moronic that Gary fired first....

Interplay so that their game world would not just be a Golden-Age of Sci-Fi sort of game be an apocalyptic Golden-Age of Sci-Fi sort of game.
So to put it simply, it was done to progress the plot so yes Interplay did ruin everyone's 2077.

I think this guy is right. If you lived in a post-apocalyptic world you don't really care anymore about why it happened. You'll be more worried about how you're going to survive the situation.

Damn... I need my .44 for the Blackhawk, but you can have... some caps... I guess...

I'm used to making a profit no matter what, a little quirk of mine. I play too much FO3 - nearly 2000 hours logged on the 360 alone. So I reckon I must have totaled about 600,000 caps across all my playthroughs, excluding the caps I've spent. If every cap I received at any time was counted it'd be waaaay up in the millions.

*sneaks up behind you and steals back money* Hehehe.... NPCs....

Yeah. I stopped using micro fusion cells when I had an incident with a faulty one in my back pocket. Now the glow from my ass attracts bloatflies from two wastelands over. I now have to time my bowel movements to daylight hours or install a bug zapper back there.

So you can have all the micro fusion cells.

I think they left it vague simply as a statement that in the end, does it really matter?

That is actually both the canon answer, as well as philosophical one. From FO2 opening: "The details are trivial and pointless and the reasons, as always, purely human ones."

I don't think it's really relevant to the story who fired first. The point was there was a nuclear war that resulted in a wasteland.

I think the point is that you are not supposed to know. I f you were the survivor of a nuclear holocaust I doubt you would have access to that kind of information. The Enclave may know... possibly even The Brotherhood.

Will it ever be revealed in future games? I doubt it

I believe the Chinese fired first if I remember the story right. Then again they have intended that to show that you can't always trust what it written down, cause other times they make it clear nobody really knows who fired first.
Indeed. If you look through the lore it is clear the 'USA' had rewritten the history book so many times to put forth a pure 'we are superior' spin on events. The Russians, Chinese or even Europe is written as some bogeymen who has done nothing more then bring grief to the world. nations that exist only to try and steal the US's god given right to power, claim USA's 'achievements' as their own and generally be the usual 'Goldstein' like enemy to blame everything that is going wrong on.

Everything is going to be put into the US favour, even who shot first, as they will clearly claim it was the Chinese given how it destroyed the USA.

Personally... I lean more towards the US having shot first. If someone re-writes their history to make every other nation seem worthless it is more likely they will believe their own lies. Then it is a logical next step for them to 'strike first against the barbarians' all the while believing that the barbarians won't be able to successfully strike back.

I wanna say some early enclave secret society made all the world's nukes fire at once. Controlling the codes and all that, or maybe released one country's nukes and then rest followed suit.

Ah, you're going with the "Teh Pure Evul" Enclave image? The whole point of them is that they're trying to rebuild society, they just have very high standards. Any trace of higher than average radiation, boom, you die. WHY would any group affiliated with the Enclave purposefully cause the very thing they spend the entire apocalypse trying to reverse?

I think it was a terrorist organization, shooting stolen Chinese nukes at the US to incite nuclear war. Then the US returned fire and China, thinking it was being preemptively attacked, unleashed its whole nuclear arsenal.

The American's clearly. My money is the president at the time suspected China of firing first, leading to the volley of Defcon proportions.

Possibility... After all the amount of times we have had brushes with nuclear death, even after the cold war ended, it is clear that this is still a possible outcome while we have nuclear weapons. The early detection systems have malfunctioned before and those times it has only been chance that the button wasn't pushed before the error was fixed. After all, there is only half a hour between detection of launch and nuclear destruction with modern ICBMs.
