But I say America. They don't seem are so afraid to, they blow shit up. All it takes is a few idiots in goverment, which every nation already has.
There, I fixed it for you.

But really, there's no point in arguing, it really does not matter at all. It's like two kids fighting and they both cry out "but you started it!"
Well, there's always two parties in a fight.

It was those crafty Canadians.

The U.S. is Canada's beard.

I figure you aren't supposed to know really. It's a war that resulted in the wasteland. It's all messed up. And it never changes and all that.
And like Chuck Norris, there is no chin under the beard. Only another fist.

The American's clearly. My money is the president at the time suspected China of firing first, leading to the volley of Defcon proportions.
Possibility... After all the amount of times we have had brushes with nuclear death, even after the cold war ended, it is clear that this is still a possible outcome while we have nuclear weapons. The early detection systems have malfunctioned before and those times it has only been chance that the button wasn't pushed before the error was fixed. After all, there is only half a hour between detection of launch and nuclear destruction with modern ICBMs.
Alternatively, 99 red balloons.

I think it was the Enclave that fired first in order to initiate the Vault experiments.
I think it was made clear that part of the plans for the experiment were to gather up the populations in the vaults and fly them into space to colonise alpha centari. The experiments were designed to test the various senarios they would encounter in space but the ship was ether not built yet or was destoryed in the war, so the Enclave were caught off gaurd before they were ready.

It's unknown who launched the nukes first. I would just guess the Chinese launched first.

Is there some point to this other than arguing which is more evil, US or China?

I think Fallout disregards who started the nuclear war and for what reason on purpose. The point of a post-apocalyptic setting usually is that humanity sucks.
Eh since the USA and China in the game are nothing like the rl counter parts...
It's pretty Alternate timeline...last I checked we didn't have laser rifles and fusion cells in the 50's.

I do not care, I just want a Fallout game based in China or a different country. See how others were affected.

If possible, can we avoid bashing entire countries?

Obviously the US nuked itself along with China, although we will eventually get a digital remastering, in which China fires first, but the US ducks with a horrible CG effect and still blows China up. This done purely for propaganda purposes, ya know, to leave the audience with the feeling that the hero they're rooting for doesn't go around blowing defenseless countries up in cold blood >>

But does it really matter who launched the first nuke? Bottom line, the world is in ruins, and some prick gets to launch yet another nuke from the DC wasteland (if said prick so chooses).

I wanna say some early enclave secret society made all the world's nukes fire at once. Controlling the codes and all that, or maybe released one country's nukes and then rest followed suit.

Ah, you're going with the "Teh Pure Evul" Enclave image? The whole point of them is that they're trying to rebuild society, they just have very high standards. Any trace of higher than average radiation, boom, you die. WHY would any group affiliated with the Enclave purposefully cause the very thing they spend the entire apocalypse trying to reverse?
"Members of the Enclave both embraced the idea of a nuclear war and knew that the common man could not survive it. They believed that as long as the "important people" of the United States survived, they could regroup quickly and wipe out Communism once and for all. Though not technically part of the Enclave, many powerful corporations benefited from the Enclave?s actions, and their research facilities were protected during the nuclear firestorm of 2077."
-Directly from the fallout wiki

Of course not everything on there is a canon as people have already said. However the would have done it becuase the only thing important to the enclave isn't really the American way or people its survival of the strongest explanation why they kill people that aren't valuable.

Ultimately its what the creator's think and the creator's most likely think the finger should be pointed in every direction, but I like to believe my theory. My theory being they wouldn't have put the enclave in as a just post apocalyptic evil group considering they dip into the prewar mythos so much. I have a feeling more will be revealed when the commonwealth becomes an important part of the story and not just a sidequest.

Edit: and the fact that major business where picked an prepared to be saved makes me think they at least knew the shit was hitting the fan that day before the Great War started.

Well, if I had to go with FO3, I'd say that the Aliens did first, which made the other countries fire, thinking it was each other.

But, if I had to go with the rest of the series...probably those damn commies.

I'll say it was Switzerland.. I feel they were planning it for awhile. In my world, they have had a large arsenal of nukes since 1850...

I think America did as they don't seem to be so badly stuffed up where I would be expecting no ruins of cities left and just crators.
So I think America reacted to a threat and started the war and america had already destroyed much of the enemy arsenal before they fired back.

Who fired first? Why, Han did, of course.

And I don't care if I've been ninja'd, someone had to do it.

EDIT: Yeah, I've been ninja'd.

In the series of Fallout games, the whole planet was reduced to ashes within 2 hours of nuclear war. It is unknown who initiated it and who fired the first H-bomb.

So who did it? Make some suggestions.
The Zimbabweans. Everyone knows that they're the REAL nuclear threat!

The aliens......

(That'll go down well)
Even though it is improbable, it could be that the downed alien aircraft found in the Capital Wasteland was thought to have been a Communist Ballistic Missile. In real-world history we've almost initiated global destruction because of mistakes on the radar so, it isn't that far fetched to believe one side, the other or, both fired by mistake thinking the other side had fired first.

OT: I think the real question is, are any parts of the world untouched by the nuclear war? I don't know about non-game media but, based on the games the only regions we know of that are decimated are California and, the DC metro area...and China too I suppose. Unless I missed something >.>
