This is a bad, BAD idea.

Firefly would make a tits-out AWESOME universe for a sandbox game. Give it to bethseda, rockstar, hell, even the guys who did freelancer, as long as they promise to FINISH THE FUCKING GAME this time.

But low tech environment like Firefly? Bad idea for an MMO. The guys who rolled core worlds would just sit at major restocks and fry anything which tried to dock... Y'know, since THEY'RE THE ONLY ONES WITH SPACE GUNS. The potential for shitty retcon and greifing by design is just huge, due to the entire 'the universe is out to give you surprise buttsex at every turn' theme of the universe.

If it's purely set in space, I see it suffering from EVE syndrome. If it has too much 'away mission' stuff, it will definately run into the DA2 complaint of reused environments.

I'm a Firefly fan myself (whoo Browncoats), but honestly...a MMO just doesn't seem like it'll work any more than Fox every bringing back the show itself. Maybe a good solid non-MMO game with a well crafted experienced and well written story. I dunno, it's hard making a good game but def easier than a whole MMO. Heck, a series of downloadable games so at least there's a chance to improve on errors made from before? idk maybe I'm just not big on MMOs but they really are extra difficult to create and maintain

For the love of god people nothing good comes from an MMO, especially not one where where character and story are the entire reason they exist, MMO's just can't do that shit.

Turn it into a good single player experience and I'm behind you 100%, but don't go dragging the name into that MMO mud.
Agree with you there. MMOs completely fail at what they set out to do, that is, create a world that feels believable and alive. I'd be interested in a singleplayer RPG, but I don't see this ending well. Damn shame.
this and this...I just don't think a project this size would be a good place to start
there are plenty of Firefly haters on there, and I feel like fans jumping at this would only serve to make them seem right...
but you're right, something smaller (singleplayer rpg, feel like saying an fps would make some people cringe lol!) would be a better way of taking the world into the gaming world

Wish I could get involved in writing, but I doubt I'd be good enough. Although it'll be good to see what occurs.
You could always sign up anyways. You never know. I don't have any fanfic or anything, but I have a few short stories I told the guy I'd email him if he wanted. Even if this goes nowhere, it could be a good entry to the gaming world/professional writing.
I guess, I also will admit I'm not entirely familiar with the Firefly universe. Only a little familiar.

This seems to me to be something that will never actually happen. Even if it did, it has so many people who would love it that I dont think it has any chance of living up to all their expectations.

I think the real question is do we need a Firefly MMO?

Then again its gotta be better than a Family guy one...

I'm as big of a Firefly fanboy as the next guy, but this project simply does not seem like a good idea to begin with. I'd rather not see the series tainted by a game that you just know is going to be a half assed piece of crap.

I would love to see a good Firefly MMO. I do not really think it would be possible.

Perhaps if someone similar to CCP would come out and do something like Eve but with more action and ground stuff as well, but that would be an insanely huge project.

Seriously.. "Browncoats"... Firefly was one of my favourite series of all time. Joss Whedon is responsible for shows which were huge influences on my growing up... but just drop it. The crew behind Firefly have moved on, the actors gotten older and developed in their art.... even if they decided to make a whole new series it just would not be the same.

Anger is, rightfully, directed at Fox for their handling of something they wanted to be the new Buffy and their reaction to not getting what they wanted, but its done, give it a rest, its just pitiful now.

I'd really like to get excited here, but I just can't, for one main reason: Fox.

As of, the origin of the term "Foxed", as of the original "Your mod is using our IP so fuck off" cease and desist order (AvP mod for Quake 2, for you young'uns).

So no, I think it'll most likely get a good way along, and only when it's nearly done will Fox step in, shut it down and THEN decide whether to continue with the official MMO, based on just how popular the mod was when they killed it.

After all, it worked for Alien vs Predator.

To the people holding the rights to Firefly:

If you're going to shut these guys down, do it now. Don't wait two years, don't wait until the game is (if it ever is) finished, do it now before they waste all that time making it.

Ok I love the shows and the movie. Great story and Characters. The problem with making an MMO out of it is that there just is not enough there. the first M in MMO stands for Massive. This universe is based around 1 ship and a handful of characters. there is one race, Humans, with 2 or 3 factions, 4 if you count the reavers. While I would love to walk around Serenity, bump into some of the Main Characters, Even check out some of the places that the story took place in, there is just not enough to make a full MMO out of. All we really know about the Alliance is that is is the big bad evil of the universe. The reavers just want to eat every one. You might be able to get a space fighter out of it or an adventure game but the best you could hope for in the MMO market is an EVE online clone.

So No I don't think they should make this game. It would be a mild success at best. Save your time and money, focus on either a different type of game or different IP if you are dead set on making an MMO.

Probably going to be the worst thing to happen to Firefly since it was canceled. I mean the show was awesome in a lot of ways but it was a character driven story and MMOs are not known for being character friendly or even character relevant. While I would love to play a firefly game, I don't think MMO is the way I'd want to play it. besides, It's going to be shut down faster then zeppelin travel once fox gets it's legal army on it.
That being said, I hope i'm wrong and it's gorram shiny!

Why on earth would a Firefly MMO be a good idea? The entire reason the show was popular was because of the heavy focus on the characters, not the universe. It's not like Star Wars or Star Trek, where there's a deep mythology to the universe for the players to explore. If not for the writing, Firefly would have been just another sci-fi series. An MMO on a not-very-well defined universe? No thanks.

(To clarify, Firefly is awesome)

The Firefly universe would make a great sci-fi sandbox MMO. With the shuttering of SWG I think there would be a large enough base to support a game like this from a small developer. Let players start out fresh on a core world as random human #63489 and from there pick what job and skills they want to develope and basicly lift the crafting from SWG and I think you'd have a great game(even if there's limited audiance). For me the appeal of Firefly wasn't only in the characters and story, as great as they were, it was also in the universe that the show created.
