Far Cry 2: Why the hate?

After recently getting Far Cry 2 and getting through maybe halfway of Act 1, I just have to ask, why all the criticism? Sure, it has very little to do with the original Far Cry, but at least it innovates while it strays from its predecessor. The malaria mechanic is quite interesting, and it creates a surprising amount of tension when you suffer an attack in the middle of a shootout, when your screen suddenly turns green and you're trying to survive after you've popped some pills. The fire mechanic is perhaps more interesting and allows for some creative combat options. It's a fun shooter, the experience of which can't be gotten in many other places and I simply want to know why people don't like Far Cry 2.

Gawking at the pretty visuals while sneaking into a base, silenting knifing dudes who stand in your way, planting a bomb near something needing to be blown up, blowing up said thing, frantically running for cover in a crazy shootout, setting fire to the nearby foliage to create a barrior between you and your enemies, and finally finding a car to high tail it outa there is pretty fucking awesome...

...that is until you realise that's all you ever do.

And somehow, that's still more than most FPSs.

It does get repetitive. Still, it was my go to game for blowing off some steam and dipping into untill I got Just Cause 2. Mostly because with the latest patch it disables the DRM and you are able to play without a DVD in the drive.

Automatic respawning checkpoints are it's biggest hurdle though. It gets tiresome when you are just trying to get some shit done and these mooks keep popping up again and again and again.

I can't quite put my finger on what was wrong with it, but I just didn't have fun. And if I'm not having fun then what's the point?

Well the voice acting was bad, like the characters for some reason enunciated a lot, and the fact that enemies respawn like 5 minutes after you leave the spot where you killed them

Let's just say it was a...far cry from what it should have been.

OT: Repetition and a lack of a purpose. The game needed more variety and needed to have a single, obvious goal.

The gameplay is fun and the visuals are fantastic but there was just one thing.

Oh look a gurad post. Lets waste these guys.
Oh look it's that guard post again. Want some more.
Oh look, that guard post, do these guys ever quit.
Do these guys ever need the toilet.
Why do I always have to go past this post.

etc etc etc. The feeling of progressions felt so minimal and when I had got past the first zone I was like "F**K YEAH, goodbye guard posts" and then looked at the map to find more guard posts. That was the reason that this game became one of the few that I had stopped playing before I finished it.

People that don't like it just lack the attention span to repeat similar missions over and over with little variety. I am not included. I can enjoy minor changes versus large overhauls. For the most part you're entitled to make your own fun and variety in missions for Far Cry 2. Granted, some people don't like making their own fun for every single mission, which makes sense and I get.

Basically some people don't like repeating the same shit over and over.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the fucking respawning guard posts. Those made me almost quit the game they were so bullshit.

It doesn't matter "how much" a game has, what matters is what it does with what has. Applying a question like that to Far Cry 2, the answer is "Not much".

At first, it's one of the coolest and most refreshing FPS expreiences ever. But after completeing a few missions in the second area, I had a realization.

This was the sixteenth or so time I stormed a base, lit it on fire, blew it up, and escaped, and for what? I stopped caring about the [bland and kinda stupid] story several demolished bases and a bazillion dead mercenaries ago and there was practically no point doing anything after the first couple of hours of gameplay. I unkowingly spent money on some of the best weapons and items in the game, so there was almost no point into doing any of the side jobs. The stoy missions quickly became routine, the respawning enemies were more prevalent, and the whole thing just became boring.

The best way ruin something good is to have it repeat itself at tandem. While a linear game can some what get away with it, a nonlinear game with massive repetition just defeats the whole point of it being NONlinear

That is really how I felt too. Pulling the map up like a normal person would was kind of interesting but I really didn't like it.

I really enjoyed the game for these reasons:

Open world
Guns jammed
NPC allies (that actually do stuff)
Awesome environments
Large scale

I was frustrated for these reasons:

EVERYONE TRIED TO KILL YOU EVERYWERE
Re-spawning enemies
Repetitive missions

Overall I liked it alot.

I just found the game to fuckn hard. I was getting shot by someone in a random bush somewhere you pull out your weapon to shoot back then oh lok at that my weapons jammed.

FFFFFUUUUUUUU-

EDIT: ^ Yeah and the fact that at every place you went to someone was trying to kill you with a machinegun on a car. I could never drive down a street without getting ambushed, my car blown up and then having to hide as a dozen enemy cars come out of nowhere to hun you down. You then have to frantically run through bushes to find a swamp and stay under it until everyone leaves. All this just to get to a mission

the shooting was bad, same 3 missions and no reason to explore also if you loose your car you will be walking for a while.

it was fun for a while but once i could only play it for like a half hour at a time. but every mission had me going across the ENTIRE map. Also it would have been nice to have a friend who could use the gun on the jeep. It was annoying to have to switch to the gun if i wanted to shoot something, then switch back to the seat when i wanted to drive. Eventually I just stopped playing. i was tired of traveling sooo far to do a simple non exciting job.

Probably becasue it showed great potential but fell down in some obvious and awful ways. I mean take out the problems with the... plot.. for want of a better word... and you still have things that could easily have been fixed. Instantly respawning enemies = annoying. Instantly dissolving firearms = annoying. Malaria = annoying blatant gameplay lengthener.

Then you have the story, the same f***ing missions all the f***ing time, advertised 'choices' that where completely and utterly missing and that on mision where you had to destroy that malaria cure without having the bainwave of maybe fixing your own disease before blowing it up.

I wont say the driving because I liked the driving, the one brilliant part of FarCry 2 was the environment and driving around it and seeing it all was pretty awesome it just sucked that you'd be rammed off the road or pumped full of holes every two minutes.

On top of all that there was the end that proved that the story went literally nowhere and left you feeling thoroughly let down.
