Farcry 2 developed by Ubisoft is a FPS that has you destabilize small African nations, and as a rule, there is nothing I love more than destabilizing small African nations. So I picked it up despite all of the terrible reviews that I?d read for it. I quickly found not all of the hate was well deserved.
Many reviews complain about the missions being too repetitive: go here, kill this guy; or go here, steal/blow up this shit. On a very basic level this is true; the missions can be repetitive. However, the missions only really play the same if you choose to play them the same. Sure you can go into every mission with three automatic weapons and a dozen or so grenades bouncing across your chest as you drive straight to the center of whatever mud-encrusted shantytown you are about to utterly annihilate, but that?s your choice. You can play every mission as a superhuman Rambo if you want, but what I enjoyed was the fact that each mission is open enough to allow you take whatever approach you want. You can find a nice grassy knoll to pick off every living thing in town with your high-powered sniper rifle before setting foot within a mile of the town; or you can sneak in from the back alleyways in the dead of night armed only with a silenced pistol and some incredible balls. Long story short, the array of weapons and the open environment give you enough room to choose your approach, and change that approach every mission, so even if the missions are repetitive the game play doesn?t have to be.
Other things I enjoyed:
Cars ? useful, even in combat, at least until later in the game where every enemy camp is armed with at least one explosive weapon.

Visuals- looked great even if my video card(s) started coughing up blood

Fire ? Yes it?s a gimmick, but it was pretty fun to watch fire spread through a town as the militia ran in every direction, into the scope of my sniper rifle.
Minor complaints:
Buildings ? why did they take out the destructible buildings from crisis? (Yes I know, different developers, but still).

Respawning outposts ? This would be okay, I could see the game getting really boring without it, but it became a nuisance because A) they?re at every crossroads B) The respawn time/distance is ridiculously short.

Impressively stupid AI ? I played this game on the hardest difficulty and I still found myself taking on platoons of militia/mercenaries, with fully automatic weapons, armed only with my pistol. If you?ve ever played an FPS before and know how to aim you won?t really need to worry about dieing until the second half of the game, and even then its pretty hard to do. Maybe these difficulties are geared more towards console FPS where aiming is more difficult? BTW did I mention I played this on PC?
So up to this point you?re probably thinking ?well, this sounds like a pretty sweet game? WRONG. While much of the criticism this game receives isn?t really deserved in my opinion, It really is not worth buying for one reason; the glitches. They started off small at first, memory holes where my FPS would drop and my CPU would start crying while looking at a (apparently) particularly intense corner of a room. Then issues with enemies being rendered inside of world geometry. It was less of an annoyance when they were only partially in, and I could still see parts of their bodies to shoot at. But all too often they were fully inside of hills or cliffs perfectly capable of shooting at me, but leaving me unable to hurt them even if I could find out exactly where I was being shot at; ever seen a cliff shoot a rocket at you? It?s quite remarkable. Then after spending hours of my life and 30 of my hard earned dollars, the game stubbornly refused to let me finish it. My mission was to rescue some hostage from some mud hut village, no big deal. Funny story though. When I had successfully, and mercilessly cut the last breath out of everything in the village I went to reuse the hostage only to find she was in another castle? no actually my super-indestructible-badass- tough-as-nails-eats mercenary just forgot how to open doors. I stood there dumbfounded as my character stubbornly refused to unbolt the single lock that kept me from the hostage. I saved, reloaded my game; left-came back; jumped up and down, killed my self in fire and grenades; loaded a save farther back, but nothing worked. With no option to abandon the mission, and no way to accept other missions while working on this one, my game was stuck at 67%. Online research revealed this to be a large, known problem with the game (though usually at a very specific spot at 88% of the way trough the game). Ubisoft has yet to release any sort of patch for this problem, so until then, don?t touch this game.

Pretty good review, although i don't exactly agree on the glitches. I've never had any glitches (except for the graphical one that made hills look pink and green) while playing it, maybe your specs don't live up to what the computer desires?

Also, it's a great game but it is really repetetive, take the assassinations from the telephone poles, I've actually gotten the same mission (at least the guy was in the same spot) three times out of five missions. They should have made it so you don't have to traverse the map for every map, maybe it would have been faster that way.
That said, taking different approaches to missions really kills repetetiveness, silently sniping is a big difference from gung-ho jeep rushes, although this is to a certain degree (mostly the long driving distances are very repetetive).

I was also very bummed that they took out the destructible buildings and trees, as they would have been very cool in this game (although I can imagine it can be hard rendering a rampage through the forest)

And lastly, I do recommend at least renting this game, it's a very cool game nonetheless!

I just got into this game, and I agree with the OP for the most part. What sets this game apart for me is the setting, war torn African country that is way off the public radar. I also love the baddies talking to themselves while they are trying to find me, I get a chuckle out of some of their lines.

In my opinion, FarCry 2 and Crysis should have their titles switched between the games.

FarCry 2 is in no way at ALL related to the first FarCry. Has nothing to do with the FarCry storyline, it's just a game where you're in Africa and shoot people. FarCry had supernatural things, and colourful characters. FarCry 2 has none of that, while Crysis actually does. FarCry 2 is in the middle of an actual known area, which is basically Africa, while FarCry and Crysis are in the middle of unknown islands.

Crysis is the real FarCry 2.

Hell does FarCry 2 even use the CryEngine?

The glitches I experienced had nothing to do with "specs" (check my user profile) they were not graphical or calculation issues. They were issues in level design. Doors that don't open when they are supposed to are not something a more powerful GPU will fix. As for you not having any issues, that's great, I didn't say it affected every game/system, but check the Ubisoft forums the non-opening door glitch has affected some users on every platform. Rumor is that it has something to do with where the game spawns the NPC on the other side of the door. Also, not all of the glitches were that big of a deal, just minor annoyances, but when a glitch prevents me from finishing a game I ask myself, "how did this get out of Beta?"

Boy, I'm really enjoying this game. I have had little-to-no technical issues, only a single minor crash in over 20 hours of play. The explosions are some of the best I've ever seen in any game, the gunplay is good (you're right, perhaps a bit too easy due to the console necessities) and the graphics are great. Honestly, I know it can get repetitive, but that seems to be an issue with almost any open-world game. Even the GTA games (arguably the best open-world games to date) can get repetitive at times.

It's not a revolutionary game, but it tries some new things. And you know what? I'd rather play a game that tries something new than the latest Gears of War/Halo clone or God of War ripoff.

Why the hell would Ubisoft not use the CryEngine to power Far Cry 2? It's an awesome engine.
Do they even have the rights to use it?

Anyway, it was an OK review, but I have to say I had no glitches like that at all, apart from that little lag-at-a-wall problem.

Good review. Agree on pretty much all points except the glitches, but then i played it on 360 so maybe it's just a PC thing?
I really enjoyed this game, was a tad repetitive yes, but the multitude of weapons helped that.
Also the health system was pretty dam awesome.

My three biggest problems with this game.
- The respawn on the outposts
- The repetitive missions that have nothing to do with the story, or even have a logical back story
- And the fact EVERYONE speaks incredibly fast, the voice acting would be great if they actually paused at periods or commas. I know its pretty nitpicky but its supposed to be dramatic. This is where my immersion stopped, I didn't start picking it up till about the 2nd mission but after that I couldn't do it anymore... Put some damn pauses in there and then we'll talk.

Oh, and about how you can play each mission different, well I could never use stealth in this game. I was decked out in silenced weapons, and did a mission at night. One kill in, EVERYONE in the area knew where I was because they could see through foliage and hear my damn MP5.

Silence Markov (pistol), I took out an entire city before they knew what the fuck was going on. That was some good times. Crouch, never run, make sure the people you are shooting are not in Line of sight of other enemies.

You're being to critical. Really, I beat the game and had a damn fun time playing it. Sure it had it's shortcomings, but you cant call it BAD.

This. I listened to them talking and said "Why the fuck are they speaking so fast? Do they even know what a period, comma, or question mark are?"

I had a great time with it too, until I couldn't finish it. At the risk of being repetitive, any game that has a glitch big enough that it prevents the player from finishing the game, even if it doesn't effect every play-through (though this has been seen on every console, before anyone else says "maybe its just a PC thing" go look at the Ubisoft support forums) the game should not have been released from Beta. I understand that not every minor glitch can be fixed (especially in an open world game) before release, but a player should be able to play beginning to end without getting a "sorry, this is a known error, but there is no fix for it at this time, you may have to start your game over" from a support person. It was really the only problem I had with the game, but, to me, its just such a fatal flaw that I can't recommend this game.

I agree with most of the review, though it seems like it (and most others) focus more on the things wrong with the game rather then what it got right. As for the glitches, I only had the one that makes some of the hills look green, pink, and such (although I do have a pretty sweet rig). I really liked then single-player, despite anything that people complain about.

There is just one thing that really bothers me about this, and most other reviews; It makes no mention of the multiplayer. It's like no one even gave it a try befor they decided to write their review.

Here's a few reasons why I loved Farcry 2's multiplayer:
1)Custom Maps/The map editor- Farcry had one of the best, most detailed map editors I had ever seen, and Farcry 2 only expands on it, giving the average player a chance to create his own professional-style maps and share them with the community where anyone can rate them, and even save the ones they like. The map editor gives you basic to high-detailed tools to render the landscape in any way you want, then add buildings, structures, objects, vehicals, or anything else in the game, all the stuff (including terrain and landscapes) that you would see in the campain are also in the editor. You can even alter the weather conditions, water level, and even what time of day it is (time moves foward the same way as it does in multiplayer as it does in single) to give your map just the right tone you'r looking for. Most of the time I can't even tell the difference between a custom, and pre-made map.

2)The reward system- When you first enter a game you have several classes to pick from such as "comando", "rebel", "sniper", ect. which you can upgrade using diamonds. Diamonds are awarded as you play for capturing objectives, getting kills, and reviving teammates. This system gives indevidual players an advantage for specialising in one class for the match (you cannot carry diamonds from server to server) making planning ahead of time and teamwork invalueable.

3)The general gameplay- The gameplay in general is very geared tword teamwork (except in a free-for-all deathmatch, of coarse) and relying on you'r teammates to cover you and even revive you, so long as you weren't totally blown to pieces. The strategy in this game is best represented by a few examples such as the uprising mode of gameplay and the use of fire. Uprising is a game mode similar to domination, except only your team leader can capture bases, so everyone must work together to both defend their leader while he captures bases and stop the enemy leader from doing the same. A nice twist to this is that once all three bases are captured by a team, then the other team's leader will no longer respawn when killed (although this is no longer in effect if a base becomes neutral befor he is killed).
Then there's fire. Fire spreads quickly (based on how fast and in whick direction the wind is moving in) and can injure or even kill someone even faster. This means that a few well-placed molatov cocktails can stop, slow down, or even turn back an enemy advance. Few games have ever truly captured the essence, and usefulness of fire in the same was that Farcry 2 has.

P.S. Sorry about putting my own mini-review/rant in you'r thread, but I'm tired of one of the best parts of Farcry 2 being overlooked by people.

Repetitiveness is okay if the concept is sound, which it is. I had none of the issues you describe on my concle (sp?), except one enemy inexplicably trapped in a piece of geography.

I love this game, actually. You could call me a fanboy.

Forgot about this game, now that I bought a new graphics card capable of running it.
Thanks for the reminder

THANK YOU I have been waiting for someone to say this. particularly the "the missions are only repetetive if you play the same"
