There can be no other PHONOGRAM! Seriously, I wish someone else here knew of it other than me. I guess thats why it wasn't a huge comercial sucess and there wont be a 3rd series. But you should really read it, 1st volume is all about Britpop so expect tons of Blur, Suede, Elastica, Pulp and Oasis going on there. 2nd is much broader in musical sense of terms but the writing, art, characterisation and its minimalistic plot make it absolutely bloody pitch perfect!

Seriously guys, fucking read it! It's by Kieron Gillen of former Rock Paper Shotgun fame!

Too hard to really say, but here's a sort of list

1. Empowered
2. Preacher
3. 100 Bullets
4. Top Ten (Only while Alan Moore was writing it)
5. Legends: The Enchanted (bet no one's heard of that)

And I like a lot of Batman, but there's no individual comic which I think is really head and shoulders over everything else.

Calvin and Hobbes are perhaps the greatest thing that ever evolved in the history of drawing things. Love it so much :)
Didn't even think of newspaper strips when I read this topic. Good call on Calvin & Hobbes, I totally agree (and I like how you worded that). It's hands-down my favorite comic ever, including comic books, graphic novels, etc. The characters, the stories, the artwork (nobody can draw water splashes like Bill Watterson) join together in perfection. I miss the strip, but at the same time, I'm glad it was able to go out on an insanely high note (as opposed to a slow, lingering, mediocre death).

Do webcomics count?

If so, my list goes something like this (I don't read many comics):

1. Concession
2. Calvin and Hobbes
3. Ballerina Mafia
4. Furthia High
5. I dunno, Dilbert? xD
