... also Portal ...
Portal is not a First-Person SHOOTER game. It's a First-Person PUZZLE game. (Not that it isn't AWESOME, though. :-D)

Depends on my mood.

Painkiller
Resistance: Fall of Man
Others...
Completely agree. Both games were awesome. R2 sucked in comparison to the first one.

Oblivion.
...What? It's in first person!

Okay, fine, Fallout 3, then.
Jerks...
Spells...arrows....bullets...same thing.
But I classify Oblivion more as a RPG than a FPS. But it is definitely a hella good game. Same goes for Fallout 3.

Just to be different Oddworld Stranger's Wrath was pretty awesome, and was a fresh fps on the Xbox.

My favorite game of all time is Deus Ex, but it's a mixed genre.

My favorite PURE shooter was probably Tribes or Team Fortress Mega.

Exactly. I honestly do not like straight FPSes. FPSRPGs? Yes.
Exactly, FPSRPGs throw a whole new twist on it. After a while in either Oblivion or Fallout 3 your character becomes a demigod giving one the ability to fight armies at once, which I really enjoyed. Plus usually FPSRPGs are like 1000 times more immersive than regular FPSs.

I'll say what I've been saying -

I can't just have a favorite FPS.

Favorite FPS/ARPG? Deus Ex
Favorite FPS/ORPG? Fallout 3
Favorite FPS Action-Adventure? Metroid Prime
Favorite FP-Action? Mirror's Edge, Thief if it counts...
Favorite Arena FPS? UT'99 for offline, Quake for online.
Favorite "traditional" FPS? Duke Nukem 3D (if that's too old, Quake 4)
Favorite "mob" FPS? Serious Sam (Yes, I have played Painkiller.
Favorite horror FPS? Doom 3 (System Shock 2 for horror FPS/RPG!)
Favorite tactical shooter? Rainbow Six.
Favorite simulation? Operation Flashpoint.
Favorite team-based online? Tribes or Battlefield...

Etc, etc. I can do this forever.

There's too many variations on the genre. Half the people I know won't even call Deus Ex, Metroid Prime, or Fallout 3 an FPS, when I think they're some of the best in the genre. I understand their reasoning, but are they not first-person view? Do they not involve shooting things? It's really painful when someone says something like "CoD 4 is the best FPS ever" because I've been playing these things since Wolfenstein 3D. I bet I can find you one you'd enjoy more that isn't even really comparable to CoD 4 because it's so different.

If I had to pick one of the titles from this mediocre generation, it really depends on what people call an FPS.

Back in my day, we didn't have to classify everything, and it was just a cool game. And "rpg elements" was "you get better and stuff" since I was like 9. ;P

Anyway, I'll have to go with Prey because it's the newest thing I've played that had lovable characters, immersive environments, a wonderful soundtrack (by the one and only Jeremy Soule (!) ), unique weaponry, (not as cool as Painkiller though) interesting puzzles (spirit form), and the portal thing was pretty cool.

But if I'm allowed to go with non-expected FPS's, and I have to pick something from this gen...

Definitely Portal. (Don't say the source engine is old, L4D uses it.) Portal is the type of refreshing, innovative, and fun games I've seen. But is it an FPS? Or a FP-Puzzle-game?
