Im not sure on the dates of these games, and im not gonna go check them im afraid! (and some of them may be very obvious recommendations, but im just going on the stuff that i have run on my lappy in the past, which is lower spec then yours.)

Unreal Tournament 99 (so a bit earlier, but still amazing!)
Quake 3
Deus Ex
The GTA Games
Jedi Knight 2 + 3
The Longest Journey
Heavy Metal FAKK 2 (ok, may get some stick for this one, but i love it!)

I think most of these are before the time you specified, sorry!

Its funny, i was gonna make a thread similar to this, as im looking for some games to be able to whack on my lappy.

A game from 2008 called Mount&Blade, which takes 519MB space without mods.

It's a strategy game where you have an army (rather small) and take castles (if you're strong enough).

EDIT: Ninja'd -.-.
Oh i modded the party sizes, downlaoded the battle sizer and now have 200 a side battles.

Head over to Good Old Games [http://www.gog.com/] loads of cheap games that will run on older systems.

You can pick up the Unreal games, Duke Nukem 3D, Fallout 1+2, Jagged Alliance 2, and about 100 more for $5.99/$9.99.

If you liked NWN2, you might also want to check out Baldur's Gate 1+2, Icewind Dale 1+2, Planescape: Torment and the original Neverwinter Nights.

Diablo 2 is great fun also, or perhaps Morrowind...

you could also have a look at the freeware/indie games that can be found at Abandonia Reloaded [http://www.reloaded.org].

That's what's so incredibubble, there is almost no limit. Almost anything you can think of is there a mod on =P!

I said it was small because it can lag if too many on the battlefield, and this guy here is looking for something that won't stress his PC.

Mount and Blade, best sword to sword comat I have ever seen, and very scaleable. You are bascially given a massive map with 5 rival kingdoms and your pretty uch left to do as you please. You can riase and army and fight for an existing kingdom, or crave out your own.
The support community is massive and the sheer amount of tweaks and add ons is staggering.

When you enter a battle, you control your character by swinging, blocking or shooting with various weapons.

You have skills and attributes, which strengthens your character in and out of battle. You also gain experience and level, which allows you to increase your skills and attributes.

I can put a strain on your PC if there are a lot of units in the battlefield, but I find it to be one of the best low-end games I have tried.

Plus, there are hundreds of mods you can download, which change everything, even graphical upgrades, go check it out! =).

EDIT: Ninja'd -.-.
Oh.. You both stole my advice.;)
MB is a blast. Seriously try it out. It has 3/9 of replies allready(3/12 darn I'm slow)
Allow me to add to the chorus of Mount&Blade fans here. Also, consider Rome: Total War, a 2004 release that should run just fine on that laptop.

Mount and Blade is merely a strategy game? I could've sworn I heard of an MMO with almost the exact same name. I'll look into it, and some of these other suggestions. Also open to more games!

Mount&Blade is a strategy game if you want to play it that way. It's also an RPG, a trade simulator, a city-builder (with the Custom Settlements mod), a wargame, and the greatest sandbox ever derived. Less plot than a porn film, the developers are pretty much telling the player from Minute One, "This is a world. What you do with it is your business and yours alone." The extreme open-endedness isn't for everyone but for my money it's 2008's Game of the Year (and for those who got in long before retail release, feel free to backdate that year to when you got into the open beta.)

Original War. RTS game.

Futuristic Russians and Americans go back in time to the prehistoric era, to secure a valuable resource known as Siberite/Alaskite for their own country.

Full of plot holes? You betcha! Good fun? Indeed!

Failing that, Sacrifice is an awesome game, as well as Alice. And all three of them are old, so...yeah.

Warcraft III + Frozen Throne would be a good choice. It has a fantastic campaign mode and still has a strong online community.

Plants vs. Zombies is another good choice. It's a simple tower defense game with tons of good laughs thrown in.

EDIT: Wait wait wait...Source engine games you say? Do you have a DX capable GFX card?

NeoTokyo Source. Just stick the bugger on low if you're having trouble.

Oh of course. I only have 200 a side as any more would crash my computer. I was doing a seige with 300 a side and while the lagg wasnt terriable, it crashed my Nvidia drivers.
You can have upto 1000 men on the feild at once with this battle sizer, but that would need a epic machine.

Its my game of 2008 as well, and the depth is just staggering. Short on cash and want to piss off a certain lord? Go raid his village. Want to earn fame and glory? Go fight in the tourdaments. You can become a trader, a slave hunter, a bandit, anything you want.

Nethack, if you can't run it your computer belongs in a museum!

Its whats called a Rogue-like. A 2D ASCII RPG with amazing depth and randomly generated levels. I've been playing it occasionally for ages and have yet to finish it.

edit: Nethack also has a graphical mode, which I actually use anyway. The graphics are lacking but the gameplay is refined to hardcore perfection!

hey, i have a laptop with similar stats

it takes kindly to messhof games and Diablo 2.
of course you did say no point-and-click adventures... so maybe diablo 2 ain't for you
although it is particularly awesome. i've held for a long time that i would NEVER EVER play a fantasy rpg game and like it... diablo 2 ruined that for me. ;)

If you can run source games, you should try Dystopia, it's a multiplayer mod based on a Cyberpunk setting, that's extremly well done, and has some uniqe gameplay in form of hackind (decking) in CyberSpace, a game area parallel to the "normal" area (MeatSpace).

You can find it on www.dystopia-game.com as well as Steam.

(OT: linking seems to be FUBARed for me... All hyperlinks I do in BB-code redirects to "escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/" rather than the intended URL, anyone elsse having this?)

HALF LIFE. My laptop can run HL2 beautifully, and it struggles with OpenOffice and Firefox quite often.
