I've always liked the good ol' Warhammer and Marauder designs from Battletech.
[sub]No, Harmony Gold, I don't care what you call them, they'll always be Battlemechs to me.[/sub]
Um, I will simply say this to all your fancy/practical and generally cooler looking robots/mechs: IT'S SHOW TIME!!!
Big O

I'll take a mech run by levers and pulleys any day, gives you the satisfaction of punching a foe yourself.
But in order to be modern, I will posit that the Prawn mech from District 9 trumps all smaller mechs- and probably some bigger ones. I mean it does have a gravity gun
Zaku Mark 2 from the UC gundam timeline.Pure Menace and intimidation. Its ugly and brutal and looks exactly like what it is a instrument of warfare. And that single glowing cyclopean eye. This is the mech from your nightmares.
VF-1D Valkyrie from Robotech (don't correct me).The dream mech as much, sleek and graceful but powerful, with more moves then dancer and more punch then a brawler. I Absolutley love these things. The ability to switch between mech, jet fighter and hybrid.is just the cherry on top.
MACROSS! Harmony Gold are a bunch of jerks who are responsible for the lack of anything macross related to be localized on this side of the world. Screw them.
Favorites:
Anything from Gundam and Macross, as well as Mechwarriors and Armored Core.
Tough question...
I like a lot of the battletech designs, but it's hard to pin down exactly what is my favorite...
Hmmm.

You are the person I agree with most on the internet so far. Congrats.
You know the new Mechwarrior is already in a legal hellhole because they violated that thing again?
Harmony Gold is evil with their licensing, they haven't used the frikkin designs for DECADES, and they still complain whenever anyone lets them see the light of day!
It just frustrates me that they get such a hissy fit over a rarely-shown design whenever someone decides to give it a proper role!
Anyways, I think these are my favorites, along with the Rifleman.
Pics:
You'll want to check out Epic 40k, its the offshoot game that is smaller scale, so tanks are only about 2cm long, meaning they can have the truely massive titans and the like! I think the only Epic computer game released so far has been "Final Liberation", it wasn't half bad, basicly an electronic version of the real game, if you can find it, it will be at the very bottom of the bargain bin (though it is over 15 years old!)
My favourite would be the Shinkirou from Code Geass R2, it uses around 3 seperate holographic keyboards to control it... Perfect for Lelouch to show off his overdramatic arm flails while piloting it.
It has a slick and sharp apperance with a dynamic feel to it. It was such a refreshing Gundam design compare to most blocky Gundam design shape (before Gundam 00 came out)
Yes it was a useless grunt but I like the sharp edges and smooth design to it (the sharp feet and the round boter and head). I also like the colour combo on it.
I view this as a "elegent" design since the white with inner black patterns made it stand out. The elegent is even more reinforce in that it got no weapon at all (well ok it got that pistol) but it got that rebound mode that shooting any beam shot at it will make it redirect that beam into a cutting blade.
It look quite menacing despite having one solid color and it can carry alot weapons (the image is without any weapons) while still being agile.
I like for being the final upgrade to Exia and 00 it not over the top looking but still remain to be powrful (how the heck it can fire a huge beam by having the blade bits arrange into a cannon I will never know). I also like the swordman feel to it by having the shielf fix permanment on it left side. The only thing to make it even more better is the sword should look larger (it's small compare to Exia).
It's epic, it can even attack with its horn. Although its main form of attack? Stabbing something with that stake of his, then firing into the mech. Oh and those massive shoulder pads? Filled with claymores. This is my Trump Card bitches.
