What is your favorite racing games ? do you go for super realistic or arcade type racers. street racing or tracks ?
Super realistic, while it's not really my thing, I actually liked TOCA 3. I've heard great things about Grand Turismo 4, but never played it.
This is my area of expertise! First and foremost, I love realistic racing games. Realistic physics, damage models, collision detection, the works. Here's my problem with racing games on the current gen.

TOCA series, AMAZING games. They started to get a little dumbed down as the series wore on, but still, great games to play. Then Codemasters had a minor stroke and came out with GRID, which by all accounts to any self-respecting realistic racing enthusiast, is virtually unplayable. Who thought those physics were realistic? Who programmed your collision and racing engines? How high were you when you made that game? Who decided to put "real world" locations in the game, then back tracked when you were called on your bullshit? Seriously, they "claimed" that the Long Beach GP circuit was in the game. I lived in Long Beach for three years, and the "Long Beach Circuit" that was in the game was in no way anything like the real life circuit. Basically, Codemasters decided that it was better to go for the almighty buck than continue to make a solid racing game.

Forza Motorsports Series: Generally good games, however, the second was a giant step backwards for them. The physics were good, not great. Braking always felt a bit too touchy, even on the lower end cars. Adjusting the cars setup seemed to have litte effect on the performance of the car. The damage was ok, a little predictable, but ok. I really have two major issues with Forza, specifically Forza 2. I'm sick and tired of racing games opting for the idea that racing fans would rather see the seems in the vinyl graphics than ten or twenty extra circuits. Seriously, there were next to no decent tracks in that entire game. I've been an F1 fan for over ten years, and I'd love to see some of those tracks in a game just ONCE! Second, when you alter a 1967 POS Chevy to the point at which it now has 900bhp and handles better than an Enzo, it's no longer a 1967 POS Chevy. Infact, it's a car that doesn't exist now, or ever. I'm all for mod'ing cars in games, but make it a bit more realistic. There were far too many "glitch" cars in that game. Coupled with the fact that you've raced just about every track after only an hour or two of playing the game makes it a less than stellar entry in the "realistic" genre.

Gran Tourismo series. Great series, great physics, however, the cars have WAY too much understeer. You could set the car up to have no grip in the rear and you'll still suffer from horrendus understeer. Also, the fact that there is ZERO damage kills it for me.

Project Gotham...do I even need to go there.

I apologize for the long winded post, but I'm very passionate about realistic racing sims and what's being "passed" as them in today's market.

For my money, you can't beat F1 2002 for the PC. I dare you to name a realistic racing sim that comes close to it in any area!

I'm detecting a pattern here.

Guess I'll have to check out this "Burnout" you all speak of...

Strange. . Where do you live?

Once you discover the joys of Burnout Paradise's "Freeburn" online mode, you will never, EVER, want for a better online racing experience.

This is assuming you like the idea of an arcade racer in a free-roaming city where stunts, stupidity and knocking other drivers into walls is rewarded. Take all of this, put it online with 7 others, and you have yourself some awesome.

Other racers I enjoyed throughout the years: Rollcage; Wipeout (series); Gran Turismo (only played 1 and 3), Trackmania, Micromachines V3, Monster Trucks.
Is there a demo XBL for burnout paradise?

There is a small one (3 races iirc), but the better demo is on the PC being honest. Mainly because its less of a demo more of a trial, so you get more of an idea of what the game is like (trial being the full city is open, online is available, only some veents can be raced and you can only unlock 3 cars, but bigger than the XBL demo).

And unlike most the other recent PC ports from consoles, it runs incredibly smooth even on lower end systems (obviously with some graphics settings properly sorted).

EDIT: I forgot to mention the DLC that is coming, or has arrived, for all versions of the game. The legendary cars DLC is awesome simply for the Flux Capacitor [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrBh8ygcqdE&fmt=22]

Everything simbin have ever done, particularly GTR2. They make the TOCA games look like Mario Kart in terms of realistic gameplay. Honourable mentions to F1 99-02 (starting to show it's age now but still amazing), Gran Turismo 4 (100bhp Daihatsu Midget + Nurburgring = win), Midnight Club 3 and LA, Rollcage, Destruction Derby, NFS Underground and most wanted, PGR4 and of course the grandaddy Toca Touring Cars.

I play way to many racing games, last time I checked my game collection was something like 2 driving games to every 1 non driving game.

Well my PC isn't really up to date.
It kinda makes your average pocket calculator seem like a sentient AI from outer space in comparison...

I agree with you there, especially on the F1 games. Have you played Race Pro? Fun game, seems unfinished. Collision detection is awful, especially on the F3000 & Formula BMW cars. Wheel to wheel has no consequences, just "bump".

Nope haven't played Race Pro and don't want to, it's just a cut back, watered down version of Race 07 without the massive amounts of free downloadable car skins, tracks and mods. I'll probably end up playing it eventualy but its massively unlikely that it'll pull me away from the PC version.

I've never really been one for racing games but if there's a demo available I guess I have no excuse not to try it, who knows? I might even like it.

Either Burnout: Takedown or Burnout Revenge are my personal favourites, I wasn't a fan of Burnout Paradise.
But if you have a Wii, then you should get Exitetruck.

Hmm there's the Problem since they say the demo seriously doesn't show what the game really is like

Well it's about $45 where I live/buy my games so it's not overly cheap. But it's pretty standard I guess. (although it is "The Ultimate Box [http://xbox360.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r36853.htm]")

Its only called The Ultimate Box because it has all the free content included on the disc rather than downloaded. you still have to buy the DLC's that are coming, so you may want to wait until the endgame edition.

Some of my favorites are Carmageddon 1 and 2, Forza 2, World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (the PS2 version, I thought the Xbox version was crap).

Just go buy it and play it for a week then decide whether it's a keeper or not

(It's a keeper just to give you a shorcut)
