Anders and Hawke
\

Honestly, I think that in terms of writing [http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/6046067] Dragon Age 2 romances are enough to make me wonder if Dragon Age: Origins was a fluke. In terms of plot integration, OTOH, the Anders one in particular I think is handled very well.
Well, it depends on what path you take to a large degree. I could buy into the rivalmance path, for instance, but that largely concerned issues with not wanting to play anti-mage. But DA2 gets a lot of flak, and I don't think all of it is necessarily deserved. I found the romances far more engaging...well, at least Anders' was. Because of the ultimate finale of the game, his arc is made that much more tragic when he's linked to Hawke.

Anders comes to Kirkwall with the explicit purpose of kick-starting a revolution. He's also sworn off sex and relationships because of his predicament with Justice. A later dialogue makes it clear that he's never actually loved anyone (or at least, never acknowledged that love). Why? Because the Circle uses that knowledge against mages. His very first quest features him killing a former lover, so I think we can safely say Anders wasn't exaggerating on this point, at least.

Enter Hawke. No matter what Hawke's gender, no matter how s/he treats Anders, no matter what his/her choices are, Anders falls in love with Hawke. This is explicit in the Anders romance arc where he states he spent three years aching for Hawke. It also comes up should Hawke pursue another love interest. In the Justice quest, Anders will call Hawke out on his choice of LI and also imply he'd be a better option.

So basically, despite his commitment to his cause, Anders is head-over-heels for Hawke. And because he has possibly the worst luck in Thedas, he meets the love of his life right as he's gearing up to make himself a martyr for the cause of mages. If that isn't dramatic tension, than I don't know what is.

If you pursue the romance arc, you're also treated to gut-wrenching scenes like calling him out about the Justice quest. Some of those lines are the most realistic portrayal of a couple in any video game I've ever played. "Just because you love somebody, that doesn't mean you agree with every decision they make." Gold. And the anguish in Boulton's voice really sells it. The pillow scene with Varric is another clear indication that something bad's on the way.

Actually, that right there is why I really love this path. Most games that give you romance options generally stick to the fluffy, falling-in-love-and-everything-is-golden parts. You get that with Anders. In Act 2. Afterwards, though, you see things start to fall apart. And not because of any lack of love. No, it's pretty evident Anders is still deeply in love. He's just equally committed to his cause, uncommunicative, and secretive. Those might not be the qualities I'd want in a real life paramour, but they're excellent fodder for a tragedy.

The whole thing could have been solved if the two leads just spoke to each other. But they refuse and everything goes to hell. I literally had to step away from the keyboard during the endgame to figure out what my Hawke would do regarding Anders. I haven't felt that type of gut, emotional reaction from a game in a long time. Not even from Origins, which stuck to its wake-up-save-the-world formula pretty hard and ignored the sort of personal moments DA2 reveled in. Origins was an epic, and it was great. DA2 was a personal drama and it made more of an impact on me. And the Anders romance/relationship arc was a huge part of the reason why.

Don't get me wrong - I think that the integration of the Anders romance into the characters and the story as a whole is awesome regardless of what I think of the dialogue.

I admit, some of his lines can definitely be cheesy...which is kind of endearing in an odd way. "I'd drown us both in blood to keep you safe" much? I could see my snarky!Hawke biting back with something along the lines of, "But then I wouldn't be safe. I'd be drowning. In blood."

Ah, Anders. King of the bad pick-up lines since March 2011.

Sex scenes in video games need to die out, except for ones which are done to humorous effect. But I simply can't take games with "meaningful" sex scenes (Like Heavy Rain) seriously.
God that scene was awful. My least favourite moment in Heavy Rain. Even though the game was really fun, the characters where awfully written and that scene in the best example of how poorly they were developed.

Anyway, I'm just going to talk about video games because I'd be here all day if we included film and TV. Liara is the only one which springs to mind, from Mass Effect. It's not particularly well written but something about it is just so sweet and so right. Especially as I play as FemSheppard so the voice acting doesn't sound like Mr Generic Hollywood man but actually like a human being with feelings.

I'm really looking forward to romancing Tali in ME3.

QFT XD

The Anders romance really fed my obssession of tragedy. I enjoyed every second of it. Even when it all went crashing down (see what I did there?)

As for going back to topic, well, It'd be between Anders and Kaidan.
Since Kaidan's romance isn't "over" yet(March hither come!! I want my sentinel back!) I can't have a full opinion of it but... I lurve them both ><

Honestly, the best one I've seen isn't even the sex scene, but an earlier kiss instead. And that's between Anders and Hawke in Dragon Age II. One minute you're talking and lightly flirting, and the next minute--BAM! Anders pushes Hawke against the wall and attacks him. But what sells it is the V/O. The way voice actor Adam Howden pants heavily afterward speaks to all kinds of repression and lust and restrain.

Even the sex scenes in Mass Effect, while well done, didn't make me feel that level of emotion. See for yourself (video features a male Hawke, since that was my first run-through too):

Ninja'd.

Thought I might have gotten in on that.

I liked the Anders romance. I fully intended to have a lesbian relationship with Aveline. (I didn't know who the potential romances were, when I met her I was like "Star crossed lovers") But Anders charmed Ladyhawke's pants off, literally.

The date scene in Final Fantasy VII with... Yuffie.
It's just so sweetly awkward, and then at the end where she gives him a kiss (I'm told the only time Cloud receives such affection on-screen in the game), and then there's an awkward silence until she screams "Say something!" at him and his response is a smartarsed "Something."

Screw Aerith or Tifa, Yuffie was the best female character in that game.

Lost Odyssey had a good one with Jansen and Ming. That whole subplot was quite well done, actually.

When I was about 12 I was almost addicted to watching the under the lake scene from Final Fantasy X. It seems sad now but at the time I just got so choked up every time... okay, fine! I still do! And I don't care! ...Hmph

Yeah, I thought that the relationship between Alyx and Gordon was reall unmatched in the video game world as far as romances go. It was expertly crafted into the main storyline, and the scenes before then and after compliment the flirtation between the two.

Eh.

That part in The Hills Have Eyes when the two mutant hillbillies---

And on that note, ladies an gentlemen, the aoriginal author of this text was executed for being naughty.

Seriously, though...I haven't really encountered that many. Yeah the one in FFX was touching, and I did like it.

As far as a touching scene goes, though, y'know, one with a really good connection between teh characters, I'm gonna have to go with Chrono Cross. Specifically, when Kidd wakes up after being poisoned (assuming you went after the Hydra Humour).

Not a fan of romantic scenes in games at all, they all suck it seems. Haven't played The Darkness (well, I have, but I got stuck and couldn't figure out how to escape that graveyard RIGHT at the start) so I can't comment on that, but all the others I have seen (Witcher 2, Mass Effects, Dragon Ages, probably others that I didn't bother to remember) just seem to be trying to cater to teenage boys.
Oh, except for Anders in Dragon Age 2, that was clearly catering to teenage girls cos that dude was a whiny *****.

Alastair from Dragon Age makes me giggle constantly like a small rainbow flavoured fangirl.

Being quite cynical and spikey in real life this came as quite a shock as you can imagine.

For those that haven't played it, I feel it's worth it for this part alone. There's a scene where after his powers have sorta begun to manifest and he spent the day (tutorial mission) ripping apart, maiming, and shooting rival mobsters, he comes home to his girlfriend's little apartment where she is waiting for him watching tv. All from his perspective, and under your control, you sit down next to her on the couch and just either watch tv or listen to her as she falls asleep on your arm. You can even go ahead and just get up. But I sat there for nearly ten minutes because even though there was no kissing, or foreplay or anything even indicative of romance, the simple act of her snuggling up to you after you've murdered half a score of vicious mobsters and crooked cops is a little jarring. She doesn't know what you've been through, she doesn't know you just finished literally washing the blood and guts out of your shirt before getting home, and she just lays her head on your shoulder and slowly falls asleep.
That was a very good scene. It was also quite unique and as Jackie sat there with me in curiosity and the tender moment, an achievement popped up :p It also added actual feeling for the character so that later when *things happened* I was practically seeing red, hammering ineffectually but with a body that refused to cooperate!

But, one of the most striking romances was with Viconia in BGII. I play chaotic good so am just able to toe the line with her. She's fiery, hot tempered and unpredictable in that you can never be sure what she will think of anything you say or do. She curses the player, pushes him away, tells him horrific stories of herself to repulse and scare him and after many hours of adventure and perseverance, she cracks. I don't remember the exact line of hers but it's along the lines of, "You win, I am defeated. I cannot keep this up any longer. Come and take me, I'm yours". (If anyone can find the precise text for that conversation it would be cool to read it). It was a pivotal moment for Viconia and a speechless one for my mage.
