Ah the Shmup, good old fasioned quater eating multi player arcade fun. From the basic Galaga that everyone played to the murderous Ikarauga everyone has played and loved at least one Shmup and loved it.

Whats your favorite?

virtua cop, time crisis series. Those were fun, and still fun to play.

RAIDEN is my favorite SHMUP followed closely by R-Type, Cloud Master, Dragon Spirit (the two player NES version, and Galaga (just counting top or side scrolling shooters)
Favorite shooters are Metal Slug (best game evar), Contra, Gunstar Heroes, Strider, and Guerrilla War.

Einhander. I am yet to play Ikaruga. I've seen some vids of double play in YouTube. Suffice to say, it got a lot of "GET A LIFE! LOSER" comments. I wonder how ambidextrous you must be to achieve such a feat? Imagine your left brain and right brain working independently...

Einhander. The best non RPG game made by SquareSoft. One of the best games on the PSX. Great weapons, bosses, and great...everything.

My favorite is Serious Sam. I love how over-the-top and silly it is. You just run around shooting wave after wave of increasingly challenging and weird enemies. It's one of the few FPS games that doesn't even try to take itself seriously. It revels in how cheesy it is.

Light gun shooter - Virtua Cop 2. There was a cheat unlocked by some ungodly amount of hours played that randomised which order the enemies popped out at, totally kept up the replayability.

I'm guessing that you also love Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. Trigger Heart Exelica is pretty phenomenal too. But you should try out the Thunder Force series (especially Thunder Force 5 and Lightening Force (Thunder Force 4)). There's a whole list I have if you'd like to see some other good shmups. Not that you don't already have an awesome taste for them anyway.

On topic, though, I love Gunstar Heroes (fav game ever) too, Metal Slug 6 and , if it counts, Alien Hominid. But Contra also holds a special place in my heart. Sin and Punishment, Star Fox 64 (if it counts), and Metroid. Metroid might not count either, though.

EDIT: I would like to add House of the Dead 2, Panzer Dragoon 2, and Rez.
