Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I wanna know if anyone's tried Gradius Rebirth yet?

I'm thinking of giving it a shot, $10 on Wiiware.

On topic completely though, I love Shmups, both 2d space shmups (Lifeforce, Gradius series, R-type series, Ikaruga), and infantry shmups (Contra, Metal Slug, etc)..

Amazing how the simplest concept can lead to some of the most extreme challenge in videogames.

I got recommended the Touhou series after I beat Gradius Rebirth on highest difficulty earlier today.

Holy balls. Been playing Touhou 7 and 8. Getting just owned.

The Japanese must think we're horrible casual gamers since none of the crazy stuff like this makes it overseas (cept Ikaruga which was still obviously designed for an eastern audience).

.. and yes I know about the Cave arcade games. Which are just insane bullet hells.

Most definitly Ikaruga for the dreamcast. I got so many awkward stares when I freaked out after finding it at a local used game store for 5 dollars.

Wish I was lucky as you. Had to buy it from a friend's friend's friend for 15 dollars for GC.

Spoiler: Some favorites

Raiden II is very good.
Gradius III is very good.
Raptor: Call of the Shadows is fun.
Xatax (only played the demo) seemed to be just what the PC market needed back in the day, but it didn't keep up...

But none of these compare to Ikaruga, or even Touhou 6-8 (only ones I've played), but taking that off the list...?

That's not a shmup, or shoot em up, that's a first person shooter.

Shmups are like contra, metal slug, gradius, r-type, etc. 2d, side scrolling, 1 hit instantly kills you, dodging bullets like a madman, shooting everything on the screen (you pretty much just hold autofire the whole time you play), collecting powerups like spread shots and reflecting lasers, you know, 80's and early 90's shit.

Oh yeah! Well they are all good. I played millions of them back in the day but one I found really difficult was Bio Metal. It was really awesome though because you could use the shield as a weapon however there weren't many power-ups.
