Freddy Mercury-Queen. Damn you AIDS, you took one of the greats!
Agreed.

Back before the Official Demotivational Thread was locked, jim_doki (I think) made one with a picture of Freddie, and a caption that read: "Tragedy - the world's greatest entertainer killed by the world's most horrible disease".

Says it all, really. No one else has ever had a voice as good as his.

I don't know their names(don't care enough to find out), but I can list some of the bands...
Breaking Benjamin
Avenged Sevenfold
All That Remains
In Flames
Alice In Chains
Pearl Jam
Metallica
[sup]Shut up...I'm aware they're huge, but see above.[/sup]
Smashing Pumpkins
Three Days Grace
You have godly taste.

Mine would have to be;
Ali Tabatabaee and Matty Lewis, from Zebrahead. I want to hug them, hard.
Zach De La Rocha, from Rage Against The Machine. The man is intelligent and has a fantastic vocal style.
Chris Cornell, from Audioslave and Soundgarden. What a voice.
Dexter Holland, from The Offspring. He can do so much with his voice, and it's so clear and strong.
Matthew Davies, from Funeral for a Friend. It can be perplexing loud for such a gentle singing voice.
And finally James Hetfield, from the mighty METALLICA. He can do things that few vocalists can.

Tarja Turunen, ex-Nightwish vocalist. I know her voice isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it gives me chills. Operatic and haunting, bombastic and sensual.. I adore her.

Tomas Kalnoky of Streetlight Manifesto, not only a good, fast singer but an awesome lyricist. Also Jeremy McKinnon from A Day To Remember, he has a great singing voice and then such deep guttural vocals.

I'm really suprised there have only been a few female singers mentioned so far. Anyway, I like the following:
Bjork - she can sound delicate and innocent and can sing powerfully when she wants to. She has a pretty long range as well as a gorgeous tone.

Eliott Smith - while his voice isn't techincally brilliant he puts a lot of emotion into it and is really good at sounding bitter. Almost like he's singing while clenching his jaw. He's a forced singer, but the good kind.

Kurt Cobain - again, not a great technical singer but there is something oddly endearing about his voice and he had a unique ear for melody.

Morrissey - he can sing about bludgeoning someone in their bed and still somehow sound like a gentleman. 'Nuff said.
Marry me.

To put some female vocalists on the list:

Eva Cassidy - her quiet, intense voice commands attention in every song

Ella Fitzgerald - she can scat better lines than most people can compose

Pat Benatar - she puts the correct emotion into every line, and never sounds forced

Tarja Turunen - she can make metal work without copying anyone else

(flame bit) James Hetfield was never that impressive to me. He certainly can't make a bad song sound good like Freddie Mercury or Frank Sinatra.

Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins.

Beth Ditto.

Benji Webbe from Skindred.

I'd just like to say that I cannot stand Morrisey's voice. I've heard mating cats that sounded better! Of course, merely a subjective opinion... :p

Serj Tankian (System of a Down, Serj Tankian )
Freddie Mercury (Queen)
Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria)
Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne)

That's all I can think of so far.

Rob Halford (Judas Priest) - It takes some serious endurance to sing like he does. His singing is energetic, and versatile. He's good at singing at a high pitch (see: Painkiller, Screaming For Vengeance) and low (see: Living Bad Dreams)

Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) - His edgy, angry, "snarling" voice is just plain awesome.

James Hetfield (Metallica) - The variety of voice work he's done is amazing. Fight Fire With Fire, Nothing Else Matters, and Enter Sandman come to mind.

Alanis Morissete - A smooth, catchy, beautiful voice.

Not a big fan of Only for the Weak? I think the vocals tie in the best in that song.

Aw, thanks.

I thought the name Hetfield sounded familiar...I feel pretty stupid right about now.
