Most anime protagonists do my head in which was probably the cause of me falling out with anime in the late nineties. After 'Berserk' and 'Cowboy Bebop' there wasn't anything made that I wanted to watch until GTO came out (and very little since) so most of mine favourite protagonists are quite old.

Hasukawa Kazuya from 'Here is Greenwood'

Sakuragi from 'Slam Dunk'

Moroboshi Ataru from 'Urusei Yatsura'

Justy Ueki Yylor from 'Irresponsible Captain Tylor'

Bean Bandit from 'Riding Bean'

Hazumi from 'Flaming Campus Guardress'
Woo-hoo! Another old-school anime fan! Ataru is my fave, but Tylor is up there on the list as well!

Due to my recent addiction to Bakemonogatari, I'd have to say Koyomi Araragi.

He's a good guy. He helps girls with their paranornal problems just out of the goodness of his pure heart. Sure, he beats up lolis from time to time, but when there's a girl in trouble, he's always there to help!

Plus, he can take a beating like a man.

Mines a tie between Rikka Takanashi from Love, Chuunibyou, and Other Delusions and Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail

Rikka is a hilarious no matter what she does. Either bothering the main character with her delusions or getting into epic "battles" with her "slave" and older sister. She also has a very depressing back story on how she developed her eight grader syndrome aka schizophrenia, which made me like her all the more.

Natsu is a fire mage who has the potential to become the most powerful mage in the world if he took himself seriously, but he rather destroy entire cities trying to stop one bad guy than train. He can use flaming punches and absorb fire, need I say more?
Natsu is in my top10 of worst character ever.

He's reduced to guy who cares about his friends and gets sick everytime he travels.

Every speech he makes is about nakama bullshit. I mean, shounens usually have protagonists like that, but Fairy Tail did it horribly.
Unless you're a Kid or has just gotten into anime I can't understand how would someone enjoy Natsu.

that's a nice opinion you got there the manages to insult a large group of people, Good job! might wana try reading the manga the guy has a pretty good arc, and acts a lot like luffy from one piece.

OT: gotta be Jean Starwind from outlaw star. I mean the guy literally falls into the whole space captain job and is just bad ass at it from the start.(helps to have the fastest most advanced ship in the galaxy:)

I have plenty of favorites, but my current favorite is Saitama from One-Punch Man.
I think I say this since it's already the second time mentioned it today.

A goofy, bald, self acknowledged hero who can beat anyone with one punch and superhuman abilities.
It sounds boring, yet it's the most awesomely hilarious thing I have read recently.

Also adapted from a crudely drawn webcomic into an awesome manga.

Spike Spiegel for the win, ladies and gentlemen.
As much as I would want to name a Gundam character, I'll have to go with Spike as well.

I have yet to see Unicorn, but I know that was going to be popular since Char is still a main character in it.
Go see Unicorn, you will not be disappointed. One of the best pieces of Gundam media out there.

Harima Kenji from School Rumble. A badass with a soft heart, and a pension to being kind of a sucker. He also is head over heels with possible the dumbest girl currently living.

Kintaro Oe from Golden Boy. The totally not sexist, white knight idiot savant.

Joesph Jostar(Jojo's Bizarre Adventure),Hot blooded as hell and honestly kind of an ass However it's fun to watch him BS guys who could clearly kick his ass and then win. He's constantly planing and while not the first shonen to really play with mis-direction during fights I still say he probably does it best Heck this guy can make running away look heroic. He also get more awesome with age becoming a cool grandpa in Part 3 and while it's sad to see him so frail in part 4 he still manage to be cool.

Maya Kitajma(Glass Mask),she's an amazing actress and just a good person. It's just a joy to watch her as she struggles with the things life throws at her.Watching her rise to fame, lose it,and come back stronger than before. She can be oblivious when involved in acting and it does hurt her relations with people.

On the other side we have Sasaya,Yuu(Tomorrow's King). She has a good attitude and is very dedicated to being a playwright. She starts out as a bit of a riff on Maya but slowly develops into her own character as she pursues her dreams.Like Maya it's just fun to watch her life and how she deals with them. It's hard to describe why they are great protagonist's they just are.

There's only two anime I've ever gotten into: Tenchi Muyo and Cowboy Bebop.

Out of the protagonists of those two I'm going to have to go with Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo

But Spike from Cowboy Bebop comes up right behind her as second.

I'm going to say Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
I mean, it's difficult not to like him.
SPOILERS: He tried to bring his mother back to life, lost his leg, lost his brother, used his arm to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armour, constantly gets into fights, endures getting his artificial limbs repaired, opened a portal from Limbo to heaven then back to Earth, and devotes nearly all the effort into getting his brother's body back as opposed to getting his arm and leg back.
I like him.

I'd go with either Alucard from Hellsing or...

Or maybe Madlax.

Maybe I just really like graceful gunslingers.
(Alucard has a special type of graceful.)

*Cough*
I don't have to say it ... but I will.

Tomoya Okazaki.
If you don't know what he looks like, kindly look to my avatar or below.

He is the protagonist of Clannad and Clannad: After Story (The Visual Novel, anime and manga).
I liked him enough to play him in a RP on the very site for multiple years.

The progression of his character grabbed me, the unique design of his character stayed in my mind and I love how he handles most things.

I honestly can't pick one of the top of my head, but it's good to see what people think are good protagonists, if only from a creative and narrative standpoint. Totally not DIYing my own little comic project.

Well, there's of course Light from Death Note and Alucard from Hellsing.
But there's also Accelerator from A Certain Magical Index. It's like he won the superpower lottery.

This guy.

I mean, it helps that Trigun is my favorite anime ever. But, the character of Vash is a good part of why Trigun is my favorite anime. Besides for the fact that he's a lot of fun, you really grow in your understanding of the character; he's one of the few characters who succeeds at being deeply characterized and hilarious.
Oh Vash, you're so great... both by being fun and by making LOVE AND PEACE seem like the considerably more badass path than murder and violence...

Personally I'm going to go with my all time favorite...

Black Mage Extraordinaire! The Dragon Spooker! The Bandit Killer! Ms. Lina Inverse!

Yeah definitely showing my age here but I love Lina as a character, vain, greedy, gluttonous, mercurial, intelligent, heroic, powerful, brave... Lina is pretty damn three dimensional and for me is the gold standard for female characters in fiction.

As far as other protagonists I'm very fond of...

The Elric Brothers, it's so nice to see a pair of intelligent male anime heroes... they are SO damn rare... also doesn't hurt that I find their personal journey and growth so engaging.

Lupin the 3rd (Miyazaki Edition), I have trouble taking the cynicism of the proper Monkey Punch character but Hayao Miyazaki's take that makes the thief more lovable and heroic has been a big inspiration to all of my own character writing.

Nausicaa, while she is super cool and makes pacifism look as badass as Vash does she's too much of a nearly perfect savior/saint character. I guess my real "love" of this character comes from her design, she just looks so damn cool.

Alita/Gally, I really love this character, a Badass cyborg martial artist with both a great deal of coolness and a lot of flaws and vulnerabilities.

I also like Tatsumi Saiga (Speed Grapher), but I think that's partly because of my age disparity fetish >>;; But it's interesting how he's the only character who receives powers and doesn't go completely morally bankrupt. Although that might be because he wasn't morally bankrupt to begin with, not sure about the other characters.
I'm fond of Saiga as well since he manages to be a good guy despite his creepy kink... adds some positivity to a very dark series.

Shinji Ikari.

Yes, him. I just love his character and his struggle and the events he goes through and I sympathise with him alot. I know a lot of people hate him because he is "apparantely whiny" (which I think he is not) but... I dunno. I love his character.

Hm... Ever hear of an anime called Best student council? Well, the protag there, a girl named Rino Rando, always walks around with a hand puppet. When that puppet punches people, they light on fire.

On the other hand, I sure do love Franken Fran, from the series of the same name, and Ai Enma Hell Girl, and they're pretty similar too, being horror stories with cute female protagonists and a "be careful what you wish for" thing. But where Fran is bubbly and fun, Ai is distant and cold

Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star, Guts is a close second but he can't match the raw awesome that is Kenshiro. He pokes at twenty feet tall raiders and they violently explode, what's not to love?

Fuu Hououji, one of the three heroines of Magic Knight Rayearth. She's smart, quick thinking, wise beyond her years, and a calm, collected nerdy type, with a sword 50% longer than she is tall, a winged magic god/mecha and the command of wind magic for healing, defence, attack and trapping the enemy.

Its just a shame the tv series liked to keep hitting her and Umi with the idiot, coward and distress balls so Hikaru could look super awesome.
