I'm disappointed that it took 23 posts before somebody posted this one. Seriously, Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is the definitive example of covers that are better than the original.
Oh damn. I can't believe I forgot about that one haha. Pretty spot on there. That song pretty much belongs to Hendrix now.

Definitely true. When I saw Bob Dylan live several years back, he played Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower.

I really love the Newton Faulkner version of Massive attack's 'Teardrop'. The original is amazing, but this acoustic version has something I think.

And as much as I LOVE the smiths, I do prefer this version of 'Stop me'

Oh Jesus Christ, how did I forget these?

Watchtower -snip-
Ah yes, Bear Mcreary's version does kick ass, not as much as Jimi's but it's a great take on it.

OT: I actually love Rammsteins cover of The Ramones "Pet Semetary" mainly because it's just a "fun" cover.

Also, for a curveball, the San Fransisco Orchestra's cover of Ecstasy of Gold. Obviously the original version works a lot better for the movie, but for general listening I prefer the melody being played by violins over vocal.

The one that does get on my nerves is Killswitch Engage's cover of Holy Diver. Not so much the cover, it's a good enough cover, but the fact that no where ever plays the original, not even after Dios death, and it's gotten to the point where you've got loads of damn Wet Biscuit loving, Papa Roach posing kiddies thinking that it's Killswitches song.

Also some damn Leona Lewis-esque cover of XTC's "Making Plans for Nigel". Fuck that cover.

For me it's Flobots - Happy Together

I still like the original too, but I find this one much more better and energetic.

The song: Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry
The cover by Marty McFly is awesome. I actually don't particularly like the original version, but Michael J Fox just completely rocks it!

One random favorite of mine is Marnie Stern's cover of Don't Stop Believing, which mixes all of the cheesy greatness of the original with Marnie's neverending source of nervous energy. Youtubing this song, however, yielded either the song accompanying this montage of terrifying makeup techniques or a video of Marnie looking at wallabies. Enjoy.

Pretty much everything Andy McKee has done is god tier
Yessir. Andy changed my life more than religion has done for anyone else.

~also, mad props to the Crowdburn cover of skrillex. I have a hard time figuring if it's better than the version I linked, but that's only because I am metal-4-life.

My favourite cover has got to be the Stiff Little Fingers version of Bob Marley's Johnny was.

I really don't like the orginal, as I am not a fan of Reggae, but I absolutely adore this Punk take on it.

I also really like this My Bloody Valentine cover of Louis Armstrong's We have all the time in the world.

It gives me goosebumps all over.
