Now, we all know escort missions almost always suck since they usually compare to nothing more than rolling an overripe tomato across shards of broken glass, but some are actually pretty good - or atleast as good as an escort mission can get.

The first one that springs to mind is Ashley in Resi4: She never lagged behind, she always huddled behind you if you drew your gun or any other weapon and if she wasn't close by she would have the decency to duck. Plus, you could stow her away in a garbage bin every once and a while.
I could count Ico, but there the entire object of the game was to guide Yorda through the castle. So I don't really know if that counts as an escort mission.

But anyway, what is your favourite (least annoying) escort mission?

The escort mission in Twilight Princess to get Telma and Ilia from Castle Town to Kakariko village. that was really fun.

The end of Fallout 3 with escorting Liberty Prime, although that's less "escort" and more "sit around and watch the definition of rape by lasers"

I like that comparison very much, it fits beautifully.

OT, I cannot think of an escort mission that I didn't hate.

Really? I remember some rather harsh language filling my room while playing that mission.

Those freaking bomb birds constantly made me loop around.

When done right it is a really fun experience, about my third playthrough of the game I had a lot of fun doing it. not so fun the first time around though.

Well, I like it when the overripe tomato is capable of fighting back, like the expeditionary force of Ultramarines you have to escort at some point during the campaign of DoW: Winter Assault. Yeah, on their own they were still dead meat in a tin, but that Landraider did pack a wallop.

The escort mission that gets you the Boots of Blinding speed in Morrowind. Mostly because the person you are escorting really isn't that slow and in the end you get the Boots of blinding speed, which are awesome!

In the original Ghost Recon on PC, there was a mission where you were escorting an armored division through the narrow streets of a war-ruined city. It was, as I recall, absolutely brilliant and one of the best 'city battle' levels I've ever played. Intense as hell too, took me quite a few tries to beat but when I finally did it was insanely satisfying.

Other than that?... erm, typically escort missions kinda suck. I for one *hated* Ashley in RE4, stupid girl kept getting carried off like a helpless child forcing me to drop whatever I was doing in order to save the dumb thing.

World of Warcraft had that cool 'Wrathgate' quest-chain where you and some faction leaders fight your way into a city and do battle against various boss. Or to be more correct the NPC do battle and you just struggle to stay alive. Probably why it was more entertaining than most escort missions; the NPC could take care of themselves, it's only yourself you've gotta worry about. That and keeping up! Pretty well done, and seeing the story-characters actually kicking ass rather than just standing around handing out quests was refreshing to see.

Can't really think of any other examples at the moment.

I like the escort mission in MW2 where you get to fly over in an Ac-130 blowing up baddies.

I never really had that problem to much, but you gotta admit she compares favourably to Farah in PoP: Sands of Time.

Good God, that elevator section still gives me nightmares.

That level in Sands of Time was terrible, it really was. Everything before and after? Golden! But that one escort section in that stupid rising elevator was... ARG!

As much as I love Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (Best is the series by far I'd say and one of the best platformers ever made!) the mere memory of that segment fills me with rage and hatred. But just because there are worse examples out there doesn't make the Ashley segments in RE4 any better. Plus at least Farah was a likable character, Ashley was just downright annoying to the point where I was frustrated that I *had* to escort her and couldn't simply let her be dragged off and made into a boss fight for later in the game.

I actually have a special save for Sands of Time for whenever I replay it: The moment that fucking elevator comes within view, I'm able to skip to the hour glass.

I don't care if it saves my life, I'm NEVER replaying that elevator again.

I suppose the one in Crysis. As long as you didn't stand around with your thumb up your ass, he couldn't die, and actually shot things. So that works.

Just as long a the escortee isn't a tard I like it. (Which is hard for most games). I hate escort missions where the dude your supposed to be escorting has the AI of a sack of hammers, and the enemy just don't give you a seconds break.

The ones in Just Cause 2 are pretty good. And I'm no fan of escort missions, lemme tell ya'.

But these guys, they take cover when you need to clear out obvious threats, and even pop off a shot or two themselves when they can. And most of them (technicians, doctors, etc) usually come with a small squad of their own guards, who actually help me out.

And they're smart enough to get out of burning vehicles on their own, and get in any new transport quickly without running in circles for a bit first, or simply standing there until I blow my horn or something.

I was initially dissapointed to see escort missions in the game at first, but after playing one or two, I actually enjoy them.

"Forward men! We must get the tech to the control room! Follow me, take cover if there's danger and take a shot when you can. Let's move! A-leeeeerrrrroooooooyyyyyyy..."
