Mine is 4 actually , Cecil is the best protagonist in the history of the series, and I know I am going to get myself flamed but I didn't really like Final Fantasy VI.

I gotta say Final Fantasy Tactics. Its story is, by far, the best thing to come out of Square since Secret of Mana.

My favourite Final Fantasy is VI, with X, XII, VII and Crystal Chronicles vying for runner-up.

VI had everything I want in a Final Fantasy game - an incredible world, brilliant characters, an awesome villain who actually accomplishes something as well as coming across as properly evil and one of the greatest soundtracks ever in a game.

Oh, and it features an opera. Not many games can claim that one.

VI.

Everything you could want from a globe-spanning epic with a villain nearly as iconic as the one he's semi-based on. Every battle background or enemy looks like a still-life painting, particularly the final boss. The only complaint I could think of is that it has over a dozen broken equipment setups capable of destroying anything the game throws your way even without the Vanish/Doom glitch, and as a result the early segments are harder than anything in the World of Ruin.

Mine would have to be 4 (2), although 6 (3) was also amazing. But my favourite 3D one would have to be 9, by far. 7 was overrated, and 8 was shit.

Which is your favourite, Escapist?

[sub]Also, fun fact: In the new Scott Pilgrim game, in Wallace's secret shop, you can find items such as "Never-Ending Fantasy" and "Speedy The Porcupine".[/sub]
4 was my favorite 2d, 9 was my favorite 3d. I didn't think 8 was utter shit though...

I enjoyed aspects of 13 but if this is where FF is going it is a truly sad day for me :(
Thank you for the details, but it is indeed sad to hear. I was buying a 360 mainly to play it but I'm just going to wait until it's 15$ used. I was a bit bothered by the areas in FFX already, so looking at these linear maps is sickening. Advertised as a good-looking action-rpg, I would have been excited, but as the new FF, damn...

The genocide-themed story seems worth the effort though. Are there really only machines for enemies? I hate that, seriously.
Not sure if this was answered for you already (I've been away for a few days) but there are a lot of machine enemies and it is part of the story. When you get to the good part of the game (around 25 hours in mind you) which also happens to be the non linear map you will fight familiar enemies like flans as well as some interesting new ones (Adamantoises for example) unfortunately this area seems to be geared for play AFTER the main story has ended which again to me seems pointless. FF was always about the story to me. I really have no urge to invest my time trying to perfect my weapons and level grind just to earn trophies or achievements. I don't understand why they didn't allow you to do this for the final boss. Every aspect of the story gameplay is just too easy. There was no challenge. I crystal ground for three hours at one point and was killing everything on sight with ease. Right til the end of the game. Made me sad!

That being said I got into the story after a while. At first it is confusing and I hate the fact that half of my understanding of the story I got from reading the masses of text on the loading screens between chapters. Why couldn't this be made clear in the actual game? But I eventually begn to feel for the characters and their plight resonated well. Again though this happened too late in the game for me.

People may completely disagree with this opinion but FF13 just doesn't feel like previous FF games. I understand that game developers and companies pour time and resources into games these days and thus want to cater to a wide audience but for games like FF this seems to dilute the experience. I won't be buying FF14 which will be the first FF game I will not play :(

Currently, it is easily Dissidia. Just picked it up yesterday and I gotta say, I love this game so much. Of all time though, it would either be X, the only one I've finished, or XII, the one I have but the most hours into and enjoyed the most.

Probably X-2, XII and XIII. Weird how I like the most 'marmite' of the series. (love or hate)

It would be Versus XIII...if it comes out...ever...on 360...maybe...

Looks like you're confirming what I thought. I don't play online, so I missed 11 and I'll miss 14. Between 12 and 15, how long will it be do you think?
Dunno! They seem to be pumping them out, there's still all the sequels to 13 they want to do to go before 15. They just keep saying they don't know what to do with the series anymore and there's rumours that the developers don't even want to do it anymore. That has to be a sign...

If FF goes all Silent Hill and sells out to the American companies I'll cry...again :)
