Shooters because I can't do that in real life. Racers as long as they're not realistic for the same reason.

I'm more of am RTS guy. I like planning out my moves and watching the enemy get crushed under my superiority! (even thought it doesn't always happen. Then you can just be the little prick that for no reason attacks)

But when your angry and you know it shout FPS. The best way to get rid of anger. blow S**T up!

RPG. Any type. They almost always have fantastic storylines, awesome characters with good development, funky weapons and lots of interesting enemies to kill.

Examples: Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King; Final Fantasy X, among others.

Action hack and slashery, expecially ones which need some skill to play, like Devil May Cry. Far too much fun to be good for you.

And then the odd one or two games that catch my eye.

2D games, shooter and fighters. Intense foam-at-the-mouth game play. Last Blade 2 and the doujin shooter Blue Wish. Hand held tactics games are also really addicting; disgaea and advance wars for the DS.

RTS- watch my minions go forth and conquer in my name.

Sometimes though, you just want to blow something up, so shooters (first or third, I don't care) are up there as well.

MMORTSFPS.
Example? :)
Planetside: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetside

or, maybe... the forthcoming Halo: Reach.
Ah, thought planetside was just an mmofps. I guess you're right. Too bad it's not very active anymore, fun game. :(
You are right. I was bending the truth somewhat.

A strict, orthodox, definition of an RTS would be a game whose players aren't "on the ground", but act as Field Commanders, ordering AI bots into hostile confrontations - either with human opponents or a computer strategizing AI, kind of like Chess.

However, it is interesting to note how many games cross genres... Halo: Combat Evolved is a FPS with third-person sections, drivable vehicles, you can even fly an aircraft. The marines you keep alongside you in combat get better at sniping, etc. the longer they stay alive (in essence, you have a ranking system not totally unlike an RPG). You even have rudimentary Platforming, where in The Silent Cartographer level, you can jump down the shaft and collect health, and an overshield power-up. On the way back up you can make yourself invisible. It even has rings!

My favorite genre would have to be role-playing, especially JRPG. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Oblivion and Fallout 3, but JRPGs just hold a special place in my heart. I find the story telling to be great, and it seems to be getting better all the time. Compare the story of a game such as Lost Odyssey to that of, say, Final Fantasy II (US) and you'll see what I mean. The characters and gameplay are also big selling points for me. I know the turn-based combat and "spiky haired emo kids" are some of the biggest complaints among those who dislike the genre, but a lot of those people obviously don't play games in the genre very much. Most of the characters are actually very far from being spiky haired or emo. As far as gameplay goes, I love the combat and leveling system. To me, nothing is more satisfying than leveling up and unlocking new abilites and being able to see, in numbers, how much your power has increased.

I actually think RPGs are repetitive if you put it like that, especially the one's with a turn-based combat system. In FPS games, you need skill to hit someone in the head (on higher difficulties, of course). In RPGs, it's all about stats, not skill. If your stats are high enough and you have the right abilities, every fight is the same.
Not so. The fights will always be the same only if you suck at RPGs. Of course RPG combat has to work within game mechanics, so you are going to be going into the same situation more than once. However, RPGs offer different classes, weapons, magic and tactics to handle different situations, and oftentimes make sure you use these different abilities at your disposal otherwise you wont succeed.

Thats a lot different to FPS games, where the only variation comes in how you plan on shooting people. Seriously, it should be plain as day for any gamer to see. Combat in an FPS revolves around mouse&keyboard/stick&trigger manipulating to shoot enemies. Good RPGs with good combat are a lot more intricate than that. You only have to look at how FPS games handle difficulty increase. All they do is make you easier to be spotted and hit by the enemy, and easier to be killed by them. Thats the general approach to increasing difficult on any FPS game.

Plus this is only combat we are discussing here, not the whole other side that RPGs have to them which FPS games lack, such as optional content, dialogue and decision making.

I'm a long time devoter to FPS since 1999. Hell I even played Doom I & II when I was in kindergarten but didn't finish them until in junior high.

First RPG I played was Diablo II. Oblivion had completely blown me away.(Look how awesome the landscape is, and free roaming!)

RPG.
I guess I'm a masochist because I'm always picking on RPGs.

I'll play any genre, but I'm least interested in racing games, flightsims and puzzle games.
