Hi escapists,

I've been playing a lot of portable games lately, I just finished Chrono Trigger on my 3DS and King of Dragon Pass on my Ipod and I've got FF6 coming in the mail for my Gameboy.

I was just wondering what the you guys think are some of the best handheld games to play because I've got some money saved up and I've been looking for some cool things to buy and I'm always interested in seeing what people like and finding out about new games.

So, what do you think are the best handheld games? (Sorry if this sounded weird, this is my first time using a forum.)

Summon knight swordcraft story 1 and 2 on the GBA!
Best games I've ever played, but since that might not be an option, I recommend trying out the phoenix wright ace attorney series though it might not be your kinda thing.

I had never heard of Summon Knight Swordcraft Story until just now. After a quick look they actually seem pretty cool, if I can find them I might consider getting. Thanks for the first reply.

Luigi's Mansion 2. No, seriously. It's amazing.
I never had a Gamecube, so I never played the original. But this looks like it might be worth a look, thanks.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was great for the PSP, so MH3U and MH4 are games I wish I could play. Alas, Capcom seem to be avoiding consoles I own at any cost.

GBA

Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow (I'm a massive fan of the SotN model Castlevanias, so I'm probably hella biased.)
Dragonball Adventure Advanced (Suprisingly fun beat'em up, but much faster than most games in this genere. Very fast and fluid controls)
Megaman Battle Network (These games are like crack. Beware.)
Metroid Fusion (See Castlevania comment, but substitute Metroid series.)
Metroid Zero Mission (See above. A remake of Metroid 2 I believe.)
Shining Soul II (Never released in the US, which sucks cause it's hella fun. Up to four player co-op Diablo-esque dungeon romping fun)
Sigma Star Saga (Very unique game that blends RPG elements with the shoot'em up genere, with a surprisingly compelling story.)
a second for Summonknight Swordcraft Story 2 (It's like Tales of... with a HUGE focus on crafting weapons.)

DS
Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania - Order of Eclessia (Actually very very difficult, easily the hardest Castlevania in years, but it's still very fun.)
Rune Factory 3 (YOU CAN LEVEL UP "Sleeping" AND "Waiting".)
Dragonball Z: Attack of the Saiyans (Old fashioned JRPG turn based fun with DBZ characters swapped in. Has the original japanese voices which provides a bit of fun. Can be very repetitive and can sometimes require a lot of grinding to progress.)

No Pokemon yet? Escapist, I am disappoint.

I'd also suggest The World Ends With You, for the DS. One of the most unique JRPGs I've played in some time.

I also think it would be a great idea for you to think about picking up a PSP. Seriously, that was such an underrated handheld. The library of games is pretty damn good, and you can pick up a used one for less than $100, easy. Some good ones include:

Lumines
Half-Minute Hero
Dissidia 012: Duodecim
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Persona 3 Portable

They've also got a ton of good games available for download off PSN, including every Final Fantasy 1-9.

To add to this: SMT: Devil Survivor: Overclocked. JRPGs really are the main reason to get into the handheld scene.

I know it's not originally a handheld game, but being able to play Castelvania: Symphony of the Night on PSVita makes buying the bloody thing well worth it.

Other than that, I have very fond memories of the GameBoy Color's TUROK and original top-down GTA.

Wow, I've actually only played less than 10 handheld games ever.

The best one of these would probably Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the GBA. I kinda took a break from the third game, Bowser's Inside Story (and put it through the wash), and haven't yet been able to find the second game but the first is really good.

Also, Kirby has some good titles on GBAs.

It is actually a remake of the original Metroid for NES, making it look much more like Super Metroid. Fantastic game either way. I actually wouldn't mind a remake of Metroid II, but it is very short compared to other Metroid games as it was originally on the super-old school Gameboy. You can find Metroid II on the 3DS VC in it's black and white glory.

Lots of good suggestions already. The Mario & Luigi games are all hilarious and awesome.

Other suggestions I haven't seen yet:

The Fire Emblem series and the Advance Wars series. Both somewhat similar style turn based strategy RPGs, but the former is fantasy and the latter is modern army stuff (tanks, planes, ships, etc.).

There's currently around 3 games in each series that got a NA release, and they would probably be up your alley.

Possibly my 2 favorite games of all time are handheld titles:

1) Metroid Fusion
2) Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Portable Ops+

I must have spent an entire summer playing the Portable Ops+ online multiplayer. Good times. I wonder if there are any people still playing it.

And Fusion is the best Metroid game. Ever.
