Most likely an obscure one: The Cleaner. It's made with fucking game maker and it still comes off as good as some other games. There were ideas in it that some million-dollars game studio should learn from

Aquaria is fantastic too.

Gish. Physics-based puzzles, and the protagonist is a blob of tar. 'Nuff said.

Technically indie, but I think it's available on Steam now. I'll add another vote of approval for Uplink as well.

I don't know what led you to think that Valve is an independent developer, but no, it does not count.

2. Braid - Is that still Indie?

If it was devloped and released as an indie game, then yes. Same as Team Fortress (Quake Mod) counts as indie even though the guys behind it got hired by Valve, who then rereleased the game without the various aspects that could have gotten them sued (ie, they made Team Fortress Classic).

Not a bad little game. Satisfied my old skool RPG fix quite well. Looking forward to the second book.

Yay, Someone else has played that game really looking forward to book 2 as well.

-Mount&Blade is amazing with so many great mods for it.
-Geneforge series is also a very unique set of games
-Castle of the winds also for a good rougelike feel.
