My favourite is Eternal Sonata. Bought it on PS3 from GAME because it was cheap and didn't regret it. I head the 360 has it too but without some features. As far as JRPGs go it has a brilliant combat system and whilst the story and characters let it down just a little, I give it points for having one of the best soundtracks I've heard and also for filling my head with so many random things. "Piu Grave!" was my line of choice for a good month...
I didn't expect anyone to take it before I got here but the poster did?
Anyway greatest game ever.
Best thing I've played in a long time.
Needs an award.
Not like a "Game of the Year" bullshit
Like an Emmy.

Oh yeah a quote

I have to fight this?"

Legend of Legaia for the PlayStation 1. Absolutely great in both story and gameplay.

Tales of Symphonia, as 5 playthroughs and 300+ hours can prove.
Yep, this. Pretty much. Even if it's only 4.5 playthroughs and ~200 hours. But anyone who sees my avatar can see that I love my Tales of Symphonia.

Runners up for my favorite JRPG include Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia/Abyss, Final Fantasy X, and Infinite Undiscovery, all for varying reasons.

Call me old fashioned (and cliche or whatever) but FF7 is probably my favourite JRPG thus far.

I Love the Fire Emblem series as well as Arc Rise Fantasia (wanting to punch Alf in the face was something I actually enjoyed, especially since you do get to do it)

Tales of Symphonia as well as Tales of symphonia 2 (no one else seems to like it though)

Also Catherine looks like a lot of fun

The very first one that popped into your mind?
Final Fantasy X. :)

Also tell me how you found said JRPG...
A friend of a friend recommended the Final Fantasy series to me, and was particularly keen on X. I didn't have a PS2 at the time, but I bought one a few months later to play it! I wasn't disappointed either. :) And the PS2 has served me well since.

...and if you fancy what was the first JRPG you played?
Pokemon Crystal? That has to be my second favourite. I have fond memories of raising my Totodile! (I didn't let him evolve until level 59, when a more knowledgeable friend told me it was the only way to prevent him from being KOed all the time.)

Final Fantasy 6, followed by Chrono Trigger, followed by Final Fantasy 7. Granted, I haven't played much FF after 7, but it clearly went downhill from there.

Star Ocean: Second Evolution, Persona 4, Phantasy Star IV or Final Fantasy IX.

I'm struggling to decide between these four as my single personal favourite.

EDIT: No, wait! Just remembered playing a fan translation of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, THAT is definitely my favourite JRPG! (How the hell did I forget that?)

Pokemon was the first JRPG I liked, but that was as a kid; now it seems to be stuck in that same time period even as I grow older... : (

In other news, Persona 4 has taken control of my life completely. 360? What 360?

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet but my favourite JRPG is Grandia the PS1 version it had friggin voice acting in alot of areas on a ps1 game!? (pretty good voice acting to imho)
The combat system on it was awesome to, with the ATB bar, if you see an opponent channeling a spell you can crit him to interupt it, crit does less damage than combo both standard attack but knocks them down the ATB bar

Final Fantasy 7 got me into JRPGs saw my uncle playing it when i was about 10 then borrowed it off him and my mind exploded.

My first JRPG was Pokemon, which I found through peer pressure. If that doesn't count, then I tried to play Final Fantasy X at a party at my sister's house so I could concentrate on something and get my head out of the crowd, but I never really got anything out of it between having no sound and not even making it to Rikku's entrance. I later borrowed VII from her boyfriend, and I thought to myself "Holy shit this is awesome!"

However, I've started a new game on it, like, eight times, and I've only gotten as far as the second disc on the last two. It's way too fucking long. I think it might have been better if it was restricted to the space of an N64 cartridge.

As for my favorite, it's a tie right now between Final Fantasy IV DS, V, VI and Chrono Trigger.

Favorite: Xenogears (followed by Suikoden 2)

First JRPG I played was either Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior (I forget which).

Tied: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 and Final Fantasy VI.
As for the former, you can probably guess why.
As for the latter, I'm probably going to get a lot of hate by saying that it's 100% better than VII in every conceivable way. Don't get me wrong, FFVII is still a good game, but VI simply blows it out of the water. To put it another way: "Final Fantasy VI has aged like fine wine. Final Fantasy VII has aged like milk."

Final Fantasy VI (Also known as III)

There are some really, REALLY annoying parts in that game but I still love it.

Final Fantasy, Crystal Chronicles, Echoes of Time. That was the first one I thought of. My favorite is FFCC, the original.
