I don't like realistic games that much... I prefer killing monsters, aliens, mutants, and robots over people. Mainly because Max Payne had the bad guys just having regular conversation about penguins and stuff and made me feel awful for busting in the door and murdering them all.

But I do love Call of Duty: United Offensive if you could call that "realistic." I also love Bad Company 2 and Counter-Strike: Source...

I liked the little bits in Metro 2033 with the gasmask watch-timer, the flashlight charger, the journal menu that was an in-game clipboard w/ compass and lighter. Dunno if I'd call it realistic though, but somewhat immersive or whatever enough to pass off as realism I guess.
Reminds me of the section of Indigo Prophecy where you had to alternate pressing L1 and R1 to keep Carla's breathing to prevent her from having panic attacks. It was honestly one of the most immersive experiences I've seen, especially for a PS2 game. Which is good, considering the rest of the game was so bad...

what is ArmA 2 like it seems quite good
ArmA 2 is TONS of fun, but it is likely quite different from any other game you have played.

It is based on simulations software used to train real world militaries (VBS2), and it is a game in a state of constant development.

I would definately suggest picking it up, but make sure you patch it if you do. BIS games are famous for having LOTS of bugs with the early versions. As of the latest patch, the game run nearly perfectly on my system, and it is a TON of fun to play. Did I mention there is an EXTREMELY easy to use editor built in? You can create almost any situation you could possibly desire.

I should also note that the system requirements are quite high, so make sure you meet the erquirements.

Il-2 Sturmovik 1946. The most realistic air combat game ever made, bar none. Even better than Falcon 4.0. This version contains all the expansions and add ons rolled into one game, representing pretty much the entire eastern front in air combat.
Agreed. Not bad fun in multiplayer either - one of the better behaved communities I've stumbled across although it's not 100% asshole-proof.

Silent Hunter 3. Probably the best submarine simulator. As well as having an intuitive user interface, and very realistic attacking of ships, depth charges, hull pressure, oxygen, batteries and all that, it also has a terrific generated campaign. Rather than having sequential missions like other sub games, it simply drops you in the Atlantic Ocean in 1939, and asks you to sink as much tonnage as possible.
I still go back to this every time after getting fed up of SH4 pretty quickly. Have you tried it with the Grey Wolves mod? If you thought they had covered everything in the Vanilla game it will open your eyes some. 10th Flotilla in the Dutch East Indies? Kiel Canal transits from Kiel and Freiderichshaven? More than 4 generic classes of merchantmen? Defined Rules of Engagement which are amended and updated to reflect the changing stances taken by the Kriegsmarine? Aircraft that don't look like they were made out of Play-Doh? Weather engine fixed up? Ooooh, yes please!!

I thought SH3 was still king of the sub sim before I got Grey Wolves. Now I don't see how it could be topped other than some sort of neural interface total immersion thingy.

NB - if you like this kind of thing, look up Dangerous Waters. Think SH3 meets The Hunt For Red October. Graphics kinda suck but its still an incredibly good game. US and Russian subs, Perry (I think) class Frigates, MH-60 Seahawks and P-3 Orions are all playable. No nukes though, dammit!

The only "realistic" game I've ever enjoyed is Insurgency. Also, how is Day of Defeat realistic?

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45.

The sad thing about ArmA 2 is that despite the concentration on realistic game design, I found its demo bugged as dogshit. In a realistic game your teammates would try to help you if you were downed and crying out for a medic. In a realistic game you wouldn't need to micromanage a million useless controls that only matter in incredibly specific situations. In a realistic game the AI would do more than just stand in the open shooting one another with ridiculous aim.

Mount and Blade: Warband. Again, not realistic in theme, but the combat is very close to real swordfighting, and it's also probably the only game to get mounted combat on horses perfect.
I played the demo of IL-2. I used to be fairly good (with all assists on of course), but I tried it recently and got murdered.

I agree on Warband.

Gran Turismo has always been one of my favorites.
