Fanboy alert.
Xbox $299 vs PS3 $899 - yeah maybe I just like my money more than a brand name.

Oh, did you guys finally get GTA IV going yet...?
Wait...what? It wasn't even that expensive when it came out.

Also, as it turns out GTA IV runs fine on the ps3, trophies and all. However, the episodes from liberty city are exclusive. If that was the joke you were going for, bravo, you are quite the original thinker.
God, you PS3 guys go mad as cut snakes if someone so much as buffets your cage.

The price I quoted was the price upon release, and for a long time after, here in Australia. That's why I didn't get one, and because I see nil value in blu-ray. It's now down to $500-600, but the 360 is still cheaper by half even if more unrealiable.
Relax, I wasn't angry. I just thought you were american so I saw a rather big problem there. I forgot you were Australian and that well...I forgot that it seems the whole of the games industry hates Australia. At least it isn't quite as bad now as it used to be. Anyway, remember to breath in and out very slowly and have a good day.

You shouldn't say the PS3 costs more. Xbox live is pay to play so you are only bleeding money every year. You can buy a PS3 Slim games bundle for only £242 which doesn't cost money each year just to be able to use the games over the internet.
Except for the fact that you don't need live. Hell, if we want to be serious the 360 can be a one time cost if you enjoy pirating. So if you are willing to stay off of the internet when you play and have those $50 you used to spend every year in your pocket instead, then the 360 is an extremely cheap system to have.

Anyway, This news is... interesting, to say the least.
Catching pedophiles isn't very high up on the list of things I expected it to be able to do.

I'm going to need longer than a 4 character password to protect my anime.

Just kidding - I'm really not into Lolicon/Shotacon. Although, I have to say, if you have any anime on your computer, it's tricky business to avoid because that sentiment has fairly heavily saturated popular culture in Japan.

Interestingly enough, there has been at least one conviction about that [http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2008/12/11/australia-bans-2d-loli-%E2%80%93-simpsons-parody-porn-conviction/]. It mostly has to do with the purchase and import of it, and I think that was an Australian court where they're trying to crack down on that. The same goes for a certain prolific collector in the US, although he sort of got suckered into a guilty plea he likely would have got out of - it's very sketchy in the United States, we've conflicting judgments on whether unrealistic-looking cartoons count or not.

So the idea of the FBI cracking passwords looking for material that may be considered pedophilic may be intimidating food for thought for many Internet denizens, since Anime is fairly cool and you might have a collection that inadvertently is considered an offense.

The PS3 likes to wear black.
So does Batman.

The PS3 is adaptable to many different scenarios.
So is Batman.

The PS3 fights crime when not working at its regular job.
So does Batman.

Questions? Questions? Anyone?

It calculates black holes, it cracks passwords, it develops cure for cancer, and it has Ratchet & Clank series on it.

[HEADING=3]PS3: It, indeed, only does everything. And then some.[/HEADING]

Now that's what i call "truth in advertising".

The reason why they're using PS3s in particular is because of the multiple CPU cores. What they're basically doing is running a Playstation 3 Cluster [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_cluster]. According to somebody quoted in that link, a single PS3 can be leveraged for as much computational firepower as 20 clustered PCs but costs about as much as one. Sounds like the FBI has hired on somebody who knows how to get a whole lot of bang for their buck.

You won't see X-Box 360 clusters because the X-Box 360 doesn't have nearly as many CPUs. It just has one CPU and one GPU, albeit on a custom board that assures maximum throughput where games need it the most. (A large reason why the PS3 is panned is because it's hard to really harness all those CPUs for a game.)

As the Wii's computational power to leverage... well, suffice to say there's a reason why they target the casual audience for that platform. It doesn't have a whole lot more power than the GameCube before it, but it does rather well considering they mixed up the traditional console game with a whole new control scheme.

Damnit Ninjad!
Yes, you are not alone you PS3 hater you.

Apparently there is a plague of people with nothing better to do than come to a PS3 thread and spread hate.
Fuck off.

I choose the PC & 360 over the PS3 because I work for a living and I haven't got a hard-on for a slight increase in picture resolution.

Hang me for actually being thrifty.
Hahaha, you have a gaming PC, and a 360, and you actually use your 360? That's pretty stupid. You can get 90% of the 360s "exclusives," running better and cheaper on the PC, plus you get a free online service that's better than Live and isn't full of ads and children. In fact, I think you're making up shit to cover the fact you have a hard on for a plastic box that plays games and occasionally melts and dies if you play it too much. Sad, maybe you will be able to afford a PS3/PC that doesn't suck someday :)
Hahahaha touche mate, touche. Brilliant comeback of the week mon frere.

I'd make a "this is why alot of pedophiles prefer the Wii" joke, but it seems to be in bad taste.
LOL might as well go there.

Anyways this is interesting, so many people have found different non-gaming uses for the PS3's processing power other than the features it already has. Kudos, I still don't regret selling mine though, it's games didn't interest me at all.

It does everything...
Ok I get it...but... when did kiddie porn get on Blu-ray?
Ahh I see it plays both old dvd and the newest porn?

Seriously.

It's damn scary but hey more power to ya now just check out the thread on CNN about viruses and malware that allows child porn viewers to remotly store their sick little pics and movies on other PC's like...maybe yours?

Pleasant nightmares on that since there would be no way to prove innocence when your a notch in the FBI's belt protecting the little kids. Yeah Remote access not that great a idea now is it.

Did anyone else find it a little odd that Mr Claude E. Davenport refered to suspects as bad guys? I dunno, it just sounds a little too pre-school to me.

Granted animated pornography is eccentric, however why should it matter if there are images of under aged cartoon characters in pornography or appropriate age?

For real people it is bad because it is robbing the innocence and causing a minor to be engaged in something that is both psychologically and physically abusive.

But am I reading this right? Australia has decided that cartoon minors should be protected from being psychologically and physically abused? I think I am now afraid of Australian authorities, that's not even remotely logical.

You could argue that someone participating with the pornography is in fact committing pedophilia, just like you could argue that killing some villager in fable is in fact murder or reading a murder mystery novel makes you an accessory to murder.

While we are at it we should just remove all criminal acts from all art, books, movies, video games, images, and any other conceivable medium, and gather it all together and burn it on a big pyre. Then we can start our Dystopia.

EDIT: Reading more linked articles on the site I am even more afraid, apparently this kind of ruling is occurring around the world. I sense the loss of any game featuring criminal acts being banned in the next 10 to 20 years. :(

Apologies, you and the other fella were the first 2 to start replying, and as the other guy was gobbing off about fanboyism and such (which got my blood up) I thought you were just backing his bullshit call up.
Apology accepted. I've done the same thing before, so I understand. Oh and...
On the whole I don't care what console/medium I play (although ultimately I prefer the pc)
All hail the PC master race.

In order to crack a password, one has to try every possible permutation of characters. In a six-digit password, the number of different possibilities is 256 to the sixth power, or 281,474,976,710,656 - yes, that's more than 281 trillion. A network of powerful PS3s, all running custom software, can try 4 million passwords every second, and while this still results in a maximum possible time of 70,368,744 seconds (1,172,812 minutes, 19,546 hours, 814 days, 2.23 years) to try every single combination, it's much faster than a human could ever hope to do.
My passwords are 64 digits. Suck on that crypto nerds.
Thats where the extradition + fingernail-pulling comes in.
