I find that I always try to avoid swimming in water (especially if i tread on top and cant see below) in games. I guess I'm afraid that I wont see the enemy or I will be defenseless. I know its a bit irrational but I cant shake it.
Does anyone else have a fear of water in videogames?

Same here. I think my main fear is that A) Some of the biggest, freakiest things that can't stay on land, stay in water, and B) That I have to look in front, to the side, above me, and below me. That's what really freaks me out.

Not a fear myself, but it seems almost every videogame character does. Enough so they never learned to swim and flail around in knee deep water like it's acid, eventually drowning.

Yeah, I absolutely hate having to swim in games, but not because of being afraid of getting killed from behind and above, but because it's so much slower. Like, in Just Cause two, you can parachute-grapple hook around really fast, but once you hit the water, it's swimming at walking speed or slower. Plus, it's really boring in comparison to flying planes in to smoke stacks.

I dont fear the water, but it does render you rather vulnerable.
The best option is to not fear death - Then everything becomes much easier.

I sorta like water in video games, I just don't like how it can kill you sometimes. But when I do swim, I try to go deep down and see what I can find. And if you play Fallout 3, going in the water may be safe. I was once in the water and an enemy was right next to me. He just, swam there, and did nothing but follow me. He attacked when Ieft the water.

I acquired an intense fear of water while playing that one level from the NES version of teenage mutant ninja turtles.

well, in a lot of games water has nothing in it near shore(Wind waker), or you automatically die in it(halo). In Oblivion you can attack while underwater and swimming and the only game where they have it so you can die from something you can't see that I've played is if you do something stupid on the dock in Resident Evil 4.

I fear seaweed, not the water itself.

Oh, and I fear shitty controls.

I'm always nervous that some big fish is going to come up and eat me.

Side effect from Jak and Daxter I suppose...

i do not fear the harmless dihydrogen monoxide, but i do in fact fear what sometimes lurks within. when water is perscribed as an artificial border, extreme measures must sometimes be taken to enforce it, and it can get weird. i hate the giant fish thing in jak 1 the most.

Dude.

The sewer level in Shadows of the Empire ruined me.

To this day I don't think I've ever been more creeped out or apprehensive during a game.

Come to think of it, a horror game that focuses on spending the lion's share of the gameplay in dark, murky waters would be downright terrifying.

I can both thrive, and be fearful in water.

An example is one of my perferd tactics in TF2 is to set up an Engie nest underwater, The dispenser can keep you from drowning, and it's good fun to rename yourself Andrew Ryan.

On the other hand, Experiances from HL:Source remind me that water can hold horrible, horrible things.
