i am shocked noone has tried getting one going, in this age of kickstarter and more niche games coming to the front you would think this would be on the list.

i would love to see a sandbox rpg set in japan during the warring states eras or the later eras towards the end of the samurai, musashi's era and the like.

anyone says japan is boring and dull gods really?

political intrigue, rebel factions, bandits, numerous clans, assasination and out and out wars, ninja, geisha, samurai, imagine if you just started out as a wanderer and could pick your path, join the shogun, join the rebels, become a bandit, become a full samurai or a wandering ronan taking no allegiance. earning your reputation good or bad.

that is what i would love to see, if not that then a red dead type game set in that era with a set story but a huge sandbox to play in.

bushido blade had some of the most authentic st6yle sword fighting of any samurai game, the way of the samurai series was ok but the combat never felt authentic, nor having to use different swords to use different stances, and none of them were really open world smallish areas linked for most of the way games and bushido.

jade empire bigger areas, but still a linear not very sandbox game but good story and great characters.

i cannot think of a rpg 1st or 3rd person that has even tried to do a proper sandbox japan rpg.

Don't like Assassin's Creed and I would not trust Bethesda with it.
But I think a more open ended RPG set in old Japan could work. The Edo/Tokugawa period lends itself well if the enemy is of supernatural origin, and the more feudal era lends itself to military drama.

Though I imagine the Heian (pre-feudal) or Meiji (early modern) eras could be more interesting/original.

Ya this just sounds like it would be an awesome game.
I haven't played many games in this setting it'd be nice to see a change in the eurocentrism.

I'd love a game set in Edo-jidai, but in Osaka (where I lived for many years). Osaka in those days was a major trading hub, with a grid pattern of canals throughout the city to facilitate freight movement. Think of a Japanese version of Venice, basically. Gondola-type boats, barges, palanquins through the streets; maiko and geisha from Kyoto on their way to entertain some powerful or wealthy client. Osaka also had a large community from outside the prefecture(in Edo-jidai, travel was still very restricted for all but the wealthiest/most powerful). If you were a humble farmer forced off your land, or a ronin who had been wronged by another samurai, etc.; if you escaped your home prefecture you'd end up in Osaka because there was always work in Osaka. Be it tending the rice patties in the East and North, labouring in the docks, or the more, shall we say, questionable work.

Basically, a 'free world' but limited to Osaka prefecture. WITH SEASONS. The Japanese will tell you untill they're blue in the face that Japan is the only place in the world that has distinct seasons - now whether that's true or not I'll leave to you to laugh about, but the fact is they are very clearly defined. You'll step outside one a November morning one day and the wind has changed - there's a dry chill in the air - Siberian wind heralding winter. In March-April you'll get ume (plum) blossoms follwed by the sakura (cherry), and as the groudn is still thick with petals in May you'll get tsuyu - a monsoonal season that heralds an impending cicada-thick humid summer.

Maybe some kind of 'story' quest that follows a battle for supremacy of the city between a local daimyo, some yakuza-types, some farmers wanting a better lot in life (a la Way of the Samurai II). You could even slip in some secretive Christian cults (Christians didn't completely disappear in Japan during Edo - many formed secretive cults that kept their religion hidden and, over the centuries of isolation, became ... something else). Get work as a bodyguard for a wealthy merchant (a la Yojimbo); gather other ronin to help an outlying village coming under bandit attack (a la Seven Samurai); hunt down and duel the man who killed your father (a la Kengo III); join a ninja clan and take missions (a la Azumi or Tenchu).

Hearthfire style you could buy property; GTA San Andreas style you could have gang conflict for control of suburbs; Fable style get married and have kids, Yakuza style partake of cultural festivals with minigames and little rewards, and Tenchu style run across the rooftops and garrotte guards.

DEEP FRIED AWESOMENESS ON A STICK WITH BELLS AND WHISTLES !!

Now shut up and take my money !!!

I second this motion. All in favor?
Aye.
*raises hand*
Mostly because I actually gave a damn about the story and characters in Assassin's Creed, whereas with Oblivion...
Aye. Edo period Japan! At any rate the open world would have a more interesting architectural display and exotic atmosphere than colonial America.

Feudal Japan rpg?

Sure, but I would make it a fictionalized version were all those mythological creatures like Yōkai, Tsukumogami and Oni exist. Just to expand the roster of enemies beyond wild animals and dudes with pointy, sharp bits of metal/bamboo.

Also, its graphical style should be based on ukiyo-e prints.

Pretty much anything not based off of western or tolkien eske mythology. Some native American mythology would also be interesting setting, pretty much the entire western hemisphere.

It's one of my fantasies to have an open world game set in the far east. RPG or just an action adventure game. The closest thing to that will be that new free to play MMO (Age of Wulin) set in medieval China.

If anyone here still owns a PS2, you might want to check "Shinobido: The way of ninja". It's not a free roaming game, but you can do a lot of awesome things, and levels are kind of open-ended, and you can leave them when you so choose.

you're thinking throne of darkness, it's diablo-esque

wanted this exact type of game since I was kid, on the border of trying a hand indie-izing the idea one of these days. shogun2 is the closest you can get if you live that japanese fantasy westerns war movie lalaland in your head aswell. signed up to give the man an answer and honestly I've typed feudal japan rpg in google search quite a few times now.

seriously though if anyone knows anything of coding(oh lol) let's take a couple of folk tales and illustrations and make a hour long 2d maquete of a thing where you play a man who kills things with honor, ill do awesome art and a shoddy try at sound design, I DREAM OF IT

Dude, I love you for signing up just to answer that for me. I saw the advertisement about 10 years ago and lost my manual to arcanum (have yet to replace it) about 7 years ago and always wanted to know what that game was. As well, I am more interested in coding than graphics. However, I am still learning how to code an engine. I do have an idea for a 2d (fake 3D) engine meant for turn based combat. I'll send you a PM this weekend and we'll talk about some stuff if you want.

You might want to check out "Seal of Evil" and "Prince of Qin", although they're set in China instead of Japan.

Legend of the five rings is probably the greatest IP that has naver been used in gaming. To bad not many people seems to know about it.

It would make a great open world RPG.

I would like to see a Western style RPG in a setting based on japanese folklore. I want an RPG set in Japan, not a 'JRPG'.

Though I have to say an fantasy RPG using Native American myths and legends would be pretty amazing as well. As much as I can enjoy Elves and Dwarves and such(and JRPGs), there are so many different places to go.

Feudal Japan? Obligatory:

SHAMEFUR DISPRAY!!!!

With that out the way, yes, I would probably buy it. Maybe the game would be better off not being like Skyrim. Feudal Japan didnt have a lot of caves to clear out.
The enemy is running like heathens from a preacher, sir!

I would like to see a western style RPG based on that, it would be a really nice change of pace

on that note i do reccomend trying out Jade Empire, ok its based on China and not Japan and its more like a short action orientated KotOR than TES but its good and interesting

I just finished reading Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa and Shogun by James Clavell and this thought excites me greatly. There is a lot of untapped potential for this period, and I don't understand how video games have not taken advantage, neh.

I did some 3d work quite a few years ago, much more textures than actual models, and I have a shitload of design ideas, no proper experience in making anything other than assets though, only fiddled with code for little more than just I needed and recent attempts to explore the game maker&co universe of programs, do get in touch
