Personally, I'm not a FF7 fan. I played it all the way through... in 1997. It was good for it's time but I'm inclined to disagree with the fan following it has. I could see a lot of FF7 fans being let down by a HD remake when it doesn't come close to resembling those "perfect memories" they have of the original game.
Perhaps the fact that I had been playing J-RPGs since BEFORE the PlayStation generation has something to do with my indifference about it. For many, it was their first glimpse at such an intricate story and presentation. It sure wasn't mine... then again, I had begun playing video games in general back when you had to still use your imagination to understand what you were looking at.
Also, don't forget, FF7 falls into that era for Square when Hironobu Sakaguchi was still at the helm of all those projects. His FF titles, in particular, have a certain charm and feel that all of the ones made without him lack. He wrote the story for FF7 when his father passed away so he was very distraught. This is why the story touched on so many dark and spiritual undertones. If you were to get a HD Remake of FF7 made by the current Square, you would most likely not be getting the same game at it's core.
