I agree that the game is terrible, but I am amazed by it's ability to warrent hate threads this long after its release.

Indeed. It seems that with the release of Modern Warfare 2 and FFXIII, all the Halo hate threads have disappeared.

Then when I did progress though the tacky cutscenes to playing some cliche metrosexual gang member and finally had a move other than "attack" I call "throw grenade 1 meter onto the floor", my guy died (ironically from a wolf biting him and not the 10 grenades I just recently detonated on myself) and then the game moved me back all the way to when I last saved it at the very beginning.

Hold on a second. You died? Right at the start of the game when you get Snow? DURING WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY THE TUTORIAL?
I'm speechless. Seriously, how did you manage to die during that part of the game?

On Topic: Meh, it's a JRPG. I have never played a JRPG that doesn't have specific points to save at. Sometimes it can be annoying, but I find save points preferable to the whole "autosave every 2 minutes and before taking every shot" followed by "load game if I missed". It adds a layer of difficulty to the games in that you get punished if you fuck it up.

OT, it really is a terrible game. Not a single likeable character, I still don't really know what happened, terrible combat system.

But they don't explain anything, they don't say how they know that Ragnarök was in fact the monster in the vision. Or earlier they just sort of kinda explain stuff as its happening. I can try that, but still as of right now this narrative sucks. I feel like there should have been more build up to a lot of the stuff that happened. I'm not hating though, I am probably gonna put it back in and take another crack at it. I am digging the battle system.

The battle system is awesome, especially once it comes into its own and gives you access to all its potential. It's one of my favorites actually.

As for the story, I do think the metanarrative was a bit lacking. This game's real triumph is in the characters and their drama. The complexity of Hope's vendetta against Snow, for example, and the way Lightning gets involved based on her and Snow's common loss of Serah... The first 30 or so hours of the game has some amazing character driven storytelling. The overall plot could have used some work, but I'd gladly take strong characters and weak plot over the opposite mess that was Final Fantasy XII.

Oh its been done before aons ago, but surely after the press start and select save, autosave and even CHECKPOINTS was invented you'd think we didn't have to be forced to replay an entire small section of the game. let alone a section which was basically me watching the ai fight for me.

maybe I will give it another go. I've never liked final fantasy games in the slightest, but the first ever and probably only hot girl I've met who plays games loves them. I'd probably rather be forced to watch twilight or something.

Ever? Than why are you starting with XIII?

If you can handle old-school graphics, pick up VII or VI. If you can handle PS2 graphics (and a bit of cheesy writing and acting, but good overall), pick up X. I very much enjoyed XIII, but it is definitely not a good introduction to the series.

I liked FFXII. I thought the characters were all well developed enough, except for Vaan and Penelo who had no reason for existing at all. But everyone else was cool. The story was great, the world was huge and had a lot of bonus dungeons/monsters to fight. Overall, I loved that game. At least in FFXII I could go dungeon crawling if I got bored with the story, or go looking for some magic sword or new summmon, this game is linear so if the ride sucks thats all there is.

FFXIII on the other hand, has charecters who keep shouting things I don't understand as if I should know what they are talking about by now. Like the game started up at the halfway point and I missed all the build up. Like Snows wife's dilemma for instance. The game has us save her even though we have no clue who she is or why we should care. The game then turns her to crystal and expects us to feel sad. Why? Your supposed to build the character up first before you kill them off. I wasn't sad during that scene, more confused. Who is this lady? Why is she turning to crystal? If a whatever-they-are-called fulfills its focus the turn into crystal! Lightning yells as it is happening. Thats not good storytelling ARRGGG!!!!

The point I am at now, is right after the fight with the glowing.....thingy.....the city was encased in ice/crystal/magic crap. Now the characters are talking about a vision and have decided they need to fight Ragnarök. Why? Snow just pulls that out of his ass. And now the party is cursed and can do magic? One thing at a time please, its like they wanted to cram as much exposition in the first few hours as they could. Now they are just loudly proclaiming all these various things I don't have a clue about or don't care about.

It gets better I hear.

Well, if you read the data logs the plot is explained a lot more. I didn't mind it. I've yet to play an FF game (although I have only played a few) where the combat was actually challanging. Sure a final boss, or almost final boss might be hard. But really, I just spent the last 4 hours or so holding down X in FF7 to win in combat. This includes bosses. I don't think the FF games have ever really been about challanging you in combat. It has always been about telling a fantasic story, and the story itself was really entertaing, if a little confusing at first. Also I felt like this system of combat kept me more involved, because I had to constantly watch my characters health and watch stagger bars to switch between paradigms on the fly. The game does have a horrible battle system for the first few chapters (which are pretty short), but once you actually get to really customize the paradigm's, the game opens up.

Serah's turning to crystal is basic plot setup: you're not really expected to care about her any more than Hope's mom. There can be some empathy involved, but they don't expect you to be all sad about it. But that event triggers a lot of things, specifically an intense clashing of Lightning's pessimistic attitude and Snow's borderline ridiculous optimism and determination. The effect it has on Lightning, and the effect she in turn has on Hope, is some of the best inter-relational drama I've ever seen in a video game.

Again, it will all make sense if you play long enough, but if you want to get it all now, it's all in the logs. Admittedly they could have given a bit more exposition in the beginning, but it all becomes clear eventually. As for things like the focus, and their purpose as l'cie, that's part of the mystery of the whole story. Give it time: this is a 40-60 hour epic. It can't be expected to lay its plot bare in the first hour.

Now XII... I loved the gameplay (including battle system, freedom, monster hunting, all of it), and the metanarrative had some great political intrigue. It was a great war story. But the only characters I felt were actually well-developed were Balthier and Ashe. Basch and Fran had some development, which was good, but it wasn't nearly as much as any given character in VII, or X. And, like you said, Vaan and Penelo were completely useless; I mean if you're going to insert two characters that have no bearing on the plot (especially if one will be the main freakin' character), at least give us a romance sub-plot. But no, we got nothing from them. In the end I just felt like it failed on a personal level, and as I said, I'd rather have a story with great characters and a merely okay plot than a story with a great plot and under-developed characters.

XIII was not the best of out of series but i didn't get mad over the whole linear nature of this game. i can see how the first part of the game is a bit slow with the lack of freedom in the battle system but later on the whole battle system is kinda fun once u get use to it. the story i thought was good and characters... for the most part interesting some of the angst and over cheesiness was too much but had unique characters and relationship with each other. Last i wonder why people hate this game so much, other FF have be done better but of it's own merits it's a decent and fun game that will eat up a weekend and more to finish.

FF13 is great game,I like it a lot,but If you don't like it,there's no need to force yourself into playing, it will only makes you hate it more.

But really, in my opinion,You should play it some more,give it one more chance.

The combat is challenging and fun as the game progresses and you unlocking more abilities. It's a kind of game that give you pussy enemies at the beginning then manage to kick your butt later on,Just like what Shin Megami Tensei did for decades.

Save points are SquareEnix's way of telling you that you're about to hit a milestone,be it a stronger enemies,a plot point or a boss fight It's also serves as a good stop point for taking a break. (When i played a game that didn't use a save point system,i tend to play longer than i originally intended.) If you save regularly at every save points,then the game shouldn't moves you back too far after you died.

I know FFXIII gets a lot of flack for the auto-battle option, but man, later in the game, auto battle is a life saver. to have to manually enter all your actions and be able to effectively shift paradigms, seems like an awfully taxing experience.

I've never been much of a grinder, but if you just play through and open up each character's chrystanarium without grinding, by the time you're near the end, practically every encounter is a boss fight.

I have spent 40+ hours on that ***** of a game, and its STILL NOT FINISHED!! I gave up on it at the free roam part, mainly cause its boring, every other enemy is WAY too overpowered, and that Hope was pissing me off even more. It is now lent out to a friend, and, upon receiving it i will be trading it in, along with Heavy Rain (Brilliant game, no replay value)

That was my hating-spree. A multi-blog, documenting my entire experience for the first 30 minutes, 1 hour in, 5 hours, 8, 15 and so forth until my eventual ragequit. I've expended as much hate as I can on that game. I have resolved to never return to it again.

I will say that XIII killed FF so hard for me that I wouldn't be upset if the series stopped forever now. I'm that eager to hold onto my nostalgia, I just don't want to risk another entry as appaling. I couldn't live through the dissappoint again. Versus will be the final straw as to whether I remain a devoted FF fan or not....

I'm hate to disagree with you, but looking back on the game, I think this is why its one of the best FF stories since the SNES days (I haven't played earlier then VII). Instead of playing someone who essentially has no backstory and no memory so the whole world gets explained to you, you instead play 6 people who enter each others lives and as the characters find out about each other, you find out about the characters. Using your example, you're supposed to feel confused because at this time of the game, you're playing as Sazh. You're a guy who was on the train and when he saw someone trying to stop it, you decide to help because its better then letting the train continue and you stick with Lightning because she obviously has military training. When Sarah gets turned to crystal, Sazh is confused about the emotion because he doesn't know who either of these women are and because he's confused, you're confused. You as the player doesn't particularly care because Sazh only cares in as much as "Wow, turned to crystal. You poor sod" Also, if I remember correctly, the only time the game has flashbacks is at points where it would be one character telling another what happened. Again, this is much better storytelling then just "Here's some backstory"

Also, why do these threads always make me want to play the game again? I've played it through to cmopletion (story, not 100%) twice since it came out and now want to play it again because I liked the story so much.

Seriously? I swear half of the people who moan at FF13 don't even fucking listen to the game. I didn't even have to look at the datalog to figure out what was going on, it sounds like you weren't even giving the game a chance. The game also explains the back story to characters through out the course of the game.
